I am a retired history teacher. I've ridden much of my life, mostly off road. I currently own two Honda Trail / CT 125's. We call them "Thing 1" and "Thing 2". As I go places and have new riding adventures I'll post the videos here.
Honda Trail 125 - Moto Camping Setup
Considerations in moto-camping off of a Honda Trail 125. What I pack for multi-day camping trips. I do variations of this depending on the requirements of the individual trips. This is my base camping pack and setup.

A father & son run of the Mackinac Bridge on CT125’s. I shared a nice experience with my eldest son running the historic Mackinac Bridge on our Trail 125’s. It was a sunny, warm and calm day on the Straits of Mackinac and so was the ideal moment to run this 5 mile long bridge. We ran North to South (Upper Peninsula to Lower Peninsula) and then back again. A great deal of fun...as is always the ...

Great video! What tires are you using on those trails?
I use Shinko 244's. 2.5 in. on the front and 3.0 in. on the rear. They work well if a majority of your riding is done off road.
@@HondaCT125Adventures Thanks! I am riding 50/50 on and off road so will stick with stock I guess for now.
I liked your animated map at the end! The 125 does seem like an ideal size for the PA-BDR. I have a Husky 501s but thinking of buying a used 125cc just for this ride! No reason to race through such a scenic trail...unless you would rather be somewhere else?
Did this 10/5 and decent weather. Agree recommend for first out BDR experience. Such a great trip. Stopped in to State College for some food, good choice! Love the whole trip.
Hi! This road movie is awesome! I had such a blast watching it. Huge thanks for filming and sharing all this cool footage! I use an Insta360 to capture my rides on a Hunter Cub, and I definitely need to learn a thing or two from you about filming and editing. Thanks again for all your hard work!
Very informative. Your gear set up is pretty similar to my gear set up for bikepacking trips, hiking trips, and even when I need to go lightweight on a canoe/kayak trip. I have the Big Agnes UL-1 BIKEpacking edition tent. It is the same as the regular, but the tent poles are in 12" sections, rather than 18", so the tent packs up in a 12" long package. Very handy for bikepacking. I also carry a BeFree water filter on almost all of my trips. It is really small and I have survived with using only it for a weeklong, 185-mile-long kayaking trip in the Yukon. I have yet to plunge headfirst into the CT 125 world, even though I know that I would love to! As you can tell from my comment, I already have too many hobbies and my wife just might have a coronary if I start yet another! That doesn't mean that I can't enjoy and appreciate your videos, though! Keep them coming!
Sounds like a nice setup for backpacking. Like most...I’ve made adjustments to my moto-camping kit as circumstances (and experience) have required. The Trail 125 is a great little bike for local roads and just about any trail you may want to ride. It’s easy to hitch carry and so goes with us most places we travel. They're a lot of fun.
These little semi off road bikes certainly give a new perspective especially for older riders who struggle with the weight and height of many normal bikes these days.
At age 66 and only 5”8’ and 160 lbs. it seemed to be a good choice. I want to continue to ride for as many years as possible. I can handle this small bike on any road/trail and am able to load/unload it from the hitch carrier with ease. It’s a great bike for anyone but especially for smaller and older riders.
What a great rig you have! Very well sorted and thorough. Happy riding!
Very good video. Well done.
Very nice video.
I'm planning on hitting the BDR-X next week if all goes to plan on my KLX 300. I've been watching your series on the BDR-X with great interest. Thanks for sharing!
Another great video. Again, great music, good commentary, fantastic cinematography. The story about the bear spray, good stuff, thank you for the video 👍
Great video. I have been looking for a video of the Penn. wilds BDRX done this way, very well done, great music and editing. I am hoping to do this BDRX this coming spring. I’m 68 years old and have never been off road on a motorcycle although I have been riding road bikes since I was 18. I just purchased a Kawasaki KLX300 hoping to ride some local forest roads and two tracks to get used to it…. I hope I can do it. Looking forward to watching the other videos in this playlist. Thanks so much👍
Enjoying your ride and commentary.
I always look forward to your next video.

Very Enjoyable
Stumbled across your videos while prepping for the smoky mountain 500 in early October. Have you ever considered doing a video on the gear you travel with? If you can pack it all on that little bike I’m sure I can get it on my KTM 390. Again thank you for the ride safe.
I plan on doing a video going over the bike, camping gear and media gear sometime soon.
Great videos! Thank you. I'm a 49 year old. I just bought a honda xr150l 2 months ago. haven't ridden a motorcycle since I was 17. I'm planning to ride the Pa. BDRX, fall 2025 for my 50th.
The XR150 is an ideal bike for this BDR. You'll have a great time.
Great video!
CT 125 is over 4000 dollars! Wow!
Thank you
Great video audio engin noise speech music perfect I enjoyed it
I did the NEBDR solo on my CT. Enjoyed every minute of it. Like you I am retired and just looking for that slow adventure. I brought bear spray with me too. I came within inches of colliding with a bear, had to skid and slide to avoid it. And had a mountain lion step out in front of me, I made the, almost mistake, and stopped to look in the woods to see it again, then my better judgement told me I needed to get out of there. Enjoying your Motovlog! Thanks for sharing.
cool love trail 125
Day 1, I was thinking of commenting on how it would be good to connect with you on a ride. I also wanted you to consider having others go out with you. I now see doing it solo is probably a personal part of the adventure in your riding. We've communicated in the past, and again I want to say, "Thank you for sharing and the quality of your content (conversation, edits, video) is top notch. Ride On!
Thanks. I ride solo and with others as well. Most of the Smoky Mountains 500 was ridden with my friend. I’m retired. Much of my riding is done while others are at work.
Great video! Appreciate it !
Great video!
Just wanted to say, this is a major encouragement to me.. I have two Honda Monkeys and have been really wanting to do this type of thing.. Also, your microphone clarity is INCREDIBLE.. what is your setup??
Thanks. The PA Wilds BDR-X, the Smoky Mountains 500 and sections of the MABDR are all great rides to do east of the Mississippi. I’m retired so…I look for a good stretch of weather and then go ride them. My POV chin mount set up is simple. I use an Insta360 Ace Pro with a direct wired mic gaffer taped to the Gripper clip mount. This set up eliminates wind noice and places the mic directly in front of my mouth. It makes for an easy “grab & shoot” set up as well. This in combination with the Insta360 X4 cover all my recording needs. I’ll send a couple of pics of the set up to your email address. I debated between getting the Monkey or the Trail 125. I chose the Trail 125 as I wanted to motocamp off of it and the large rack on the Trail 125 made this easier.
@@HondaCT125Adventures Thanks for the info!! I’m using a GoPro 12 with a “Chinmounts” helmet adapter .. a Ulanzi GoPro case that holds the mic adapter helps considerably.. but I just put it together last night, so we’ll see how it works as soon as all the remnants of this tropical pain in the neck leaves the area. I’ve built the rear baskets on my monkeys specifically for camping/fishing. A milk crate is a wonderful thing😁. You can mount anything from pelican boxes to fishing rod holders easily.. I’m looking at a 2022 CT125 but I’ve got to let a 2022 Royal Enfield Himalayan go first.. long story, but I didn’t care for it. Again, thanks for the info and I’ll be watching!! Willie “The Grayt Outdoors”
It does raise interest. Thank you. Been sixteen years since I hit a turkey doing 100
Great trip enjoyed it thank you
Enjoyed the whole series. Such a cool adventure on some cool little bikes. I made the mistake of mentioning these bikes to a co-worker and turns out that he has been considering a trade for one for a couple of years, but doesn't really have anyone else to ride with...now he is after me to squeeze the trigger on one. Maybe in the future, too many other hobbies right now to bring on another one! My wife would have a cow if I brought in a motorcycle to go with my 8 canoes & kayaks, 14 bicycles, hiking & camping gear, video & podcast equipment...the list goes on & on. Thanks for sharing and for getting me to weighing the pros & cons of making my wife mad again. LOL!

Nice video on the CT....great bike, nice scenery
Hey there, I’m Willie, I have an outdoors channel here on RUclips. Like you, I let go of a larger bike to find myself on (2) 2020 Honda Monkeys Z125 bikes.. I live in Virginia (overpopulated Virginia) And I envy your area and your ride.. this is the first of your videos I’ve watched and now I’ll be going back to the beginning to watch it all. About a year ago I bought a Royal Enfield Himalayan that I never ride.. so I’m looking to let it go possibly for a CT125.. Love the mini Moto thing.. Who knew the fountain of youth had one cylinder, two wheels, and handlebars.. Great video my friend!!
Thanks. I’m a (relatively) small guy at age 66 ( 5’8” and 160 pounds). I want to keep riding for as long as safely possible. I know I will be growing weaker and not stronger as I head towards 70 and beyond. It is what it is. I sold my dual sport Yamaha and bought (2) used Trail 125’s. I accepted that I would only be able to do local roads and any trail I chose. (The CT125 tops out between 50-55…far less on long hills). I hitch carry these bikes nearly everywhere we go and frequently find great places to ride. A huge benefit is I no longer have any anxieties related to dropping the bike or other weight issues. I relax and enjoy the rides more. I rarely rode 55+ roads and so have not missed having a more powerful bike. I’ve embraced local roads and…riding off road.
@@HondaCT125Adventures Sounds like you and I have a lot in common when it comes to our decision making process.. I dropped my last Harley in a gravel parking lot while out on a fishing adventure and it took myself and two other full grown men to lift it back to its wheels.. I decided then, it was time to down size if I still wanted to “enjoy” riding.. Enter the first Honda Monkey.. I traded my Harley in.. I was thought to be insane, because no one trades a Harley Davidson on such a tiny machine.. I’ve never regretted the transaction.. I’ve had more actual “fun” on these two, basically mini-bikes than I ever had on any of the large bikes I’ve owned. I’m 170lbs, 5’8”.. the Monkeys haul me and my fishing equipment around just fine. I like the way you have your CT set up, and the 13 tooth gear looks like it’s doing the trick.. My wife is originally from the Asheville region of NC. I’m going to have to get that way and ride some of that area.. Maybe one day.. If you ever get to Eastern Virginia, send me an email. We have a couple things around here worth seeing.. Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown.. and Nags Head, NC is just a couple hours on the back roads (I’ve made that trip on the Monkey😉) Keep the rubber side down and maybe we’ll meet some time down the road. Willie From, The Grayt Outdoors
@@TheGraytOutdoors Thanks. I’m a retired history teacher and so am (generally) familiar with the many places in VA associated with the colonial and Civil War periods. I’m contemplating running the MADBR next summer and stopping at some of the historical locations along the way. I’ve not regretted downsizing to the CT125. I’m off this morning for another week of riding. Fingers crossed the forecast holds... 🤞🏻
Awesome videos. My group did the 500 back in June. on an assortment of bikes . The smallest was my daughters xt 250. Im 66 and would like to do it again. At a slower pace😊 I like those trail 125s.
They have a cool wooden boat show there in Les Cheneaux , and a great little culinary restaurant. The restaurant is by reservation only unfortunately. Oh, the boat show with all the antique boats is maybe in Hessel
The Antique Wooden Boat Show in Hessel is great. We've attended twice. It's nice to see the care people put into restoring and maintaining their boats.
Haha.. some of your trails were for like off road two stroke dirt bikes.
When we climbed "The Rock Garden" east of Ellijay it was after nine hours on the trail. An end of day challenge.
I would try this on maybe a Honda XR150L. Or a TW200.😂
Very nice ride .. video turned out well.

Great video fellas! Done most of these trails on my little 125 and it was a blast. Easing along taking in the scenery and not getting in any hurry! Enjoyed this one for sure!!
Thanks. I enjoy your channel. So many great adventures. 👍🏻 Yeah...smaller bikes have some advantages (to go with their disadvantages). I’m relatively small at 5’8” and 160 pounds. @HondaCT125Adventures-cj9rs awesome man! I'm only 48 but broke myself up pretty good in my younger days. I definitely feel ya on a smaller lighter bike. For me it was time slow down for sure. Now I enjoy seeing the sites and taking it in. The little TW has been nice as well. Appreciate the support man! Ride on! PS Have you watched JR Depew's stuff? Think he's 73 and still grinding hard. Man I hope I can do that!
@@PSBEadventures JR Depew's channel is great. I've watched many of his videos across the past several months.
@@HondaCT125Adventures agreed!
Really enjoyed your trip !
Thanks. We had a great deal of fun. The weather cooperated and that's always a big plus.
The rock garden is rough. Better than 6” of loose gravel
Yes! We hit the Rock Garden after more than nine hours on the trail. We were delayed due to having to hack and lift our way through Cohutta after the wind storm. It was a challenge and added to our long day finishing the Green Section.
What is the highest elevation of the Smoky Mountain 500
Good question. The greatest elevation I remembered seeing on the telemetry data was 4000+ feet.
Cool video and some cool little bikes!
Thanks! They're a lot of fun with few worries.
@@HondaCT125Adventures I was telling one of my co-workers about them and he had almost bought one a couple of years ago. Now he is trying to convince me to get one. Maybe in a year or so…who knows!
@@mountainsnmoore256 They're the most fun bike I've owned. They do everything well as long as you only ride them on local roads and just about any trails you find. Anyone buying one has to be prepared to accept the fact that you can only take them on 55 mph or less roads. 45 is ideal. On a long uphill stretch with a full camping load on...your top speed may be down in the high 30's.
@@HondaCT125Adventures Oh yeah. “Not enough power to hurt themselves.” That is what my dad has always said about the old 1940, 50 & early 60s Ford tractors. He says that is why there are so many of them still around. 🤷🏻♂️😂😂
What happened to your riding buddy. I might have missed you mentioning that already.
At the end of the Red Section (Day 2) his bike began stalling during water crossings. We found out it was a corroded ignition wire cap. It was decided he couldn't continue on to the Yellow Section with all the water crossings near the end...Whitt Road and others. New OEM spark plug and ignition cap have been installed so everything is back to normal with the bike.
So, seems the trick to safety on the gravel roads is to give yourself permission to slow down. Have you tires to accommodate the gravel roads or have you just kept the stock tires that came with the bike? Have you had to change a tire yet? Thank you for sharing this…from east Tennessee. P.S. Very interested in how you animate the route you traveled…MOST EXCELLENT
Tires: The stock tires that come on the CT125 are fine for roads and light trail riding. Much of my riding is off road so I put on a set of Shinko 244's. - 2.50 inch in the front and 3.00 inch in the back. They're great on any trail whether is is gravel, dirt, mud or anything else. They are a little louder on pavement but not to the point of being annoying.
