      Rain is never a problem. If you have a few rainy days in a row, we recommend keeping an eye on your charge for the battery. You can tell if the battery charge is medium to low when it's flashing red and green. If it's red, it's low and needs to charge. They do come with a cord to charge to an outlet if needed. I love soil blocks! I've found that you have to be more careful with the amount of water you give them in the beginning. I usually make the blocks, sow, and cover them, then don't water until the seedlings pop out. Those blocks hold a lot more water than your standard cell tray and I've had problems with seedlings damping off in them before because I was watering them like I would a cell tray.

    Just out of curiosity, even if an egg is frozen, would it still be good? There are those that will freeze eggs ( out of the shell) and thaw them when they need them.

    • @humbledhomestead
      @humbledhomestead 6 месяцев назад

      For me personally, I think if the egg has frozen and cracked it is no longer good for my family to eat as the blooms protective seal has been broken as well. It's different with removing the yolk from an egg that still has its protective bloom and not cracked until you crack it open and then freeze it. I hope that helps answer your question. Wood burning heat is the best. It's crazy that the insurance companies can't understand there are those people who put safety first when using wood for the heat source. What a world we live in. They only burned wood for hundreds of years, if not longer. Things are looking good on your homestead, beautiful property.

    Speaking from experience, my first goat shelter was also made of pallets. I also used three pallets deep and three pallets wide. I've since demoed the entire structure for various reasons. See below. 1. The walls are not strong enough to withstand 140 lbs goats pushing on rhem and climbing onto it. 2. You will need to insulate or cover the entire structure to protect your hay from getting wet and to keep the goats warm in winter. 3. Rats and mice love to nest in between the walls of the pallets. They will pull the hay in between the pallets to nest and have babies. They like to be near a food and water source. 4. You need to build a floor because the water will seap in from the rain and soak the hay. Suggest either removing the inner layer of pallet blanks so that rats and mice cannot hide in between them or cover the interior with plywood and routinely drop rat pellets in between the pallets to kill the field mice that will come for the feed or to nest in the hay. It is a nice cheap shelter to start with but definitely has its downsides. I'm rebuilding ours currently using 2x4s and fence pickets and will fortify with leftover pallet planks. It will sit off the ground on cinder blocks to prevent the floor from getting wetn and there will not be any crevices for mice to hide. All the best. Happy Homesteading ♥️

    • @humbledhomestead
      @humbledhomestead 10 месяцев назад

      Thank you for your comment. This shelter is a mobile shelter and moved regularly. 1. We've never had an issue with our goats pushing on it or climbing on it, but it is something maybe for others to think about. 2. This was left open for summer heat to give air flow. We do cover it in the cooler/rainier months if used but our goats are located in winter housing in our barn.3. Again, this shelter moves, we have yet in 2 years experience have mice in our shelters. 3. this shelter moves so often they don't have hay getting wet were they lay. We loved this design so much we created a larger 2.0 version. I would do things a little different if this was a stationary shelter but its mobile for our rotational grazing. Thanks for your comment and watching. Happy building your new goat shelter. Blessings!

      You failed to mention goats continually gettig their heads caught. In the pallets, fences, gates, tree forks, anywhere their heads shouldn't be.

    How many pallets did it take

      Hello! We used 2 pallets on the sides, 3 on the back, and 2 on the front. We used 9 pallets all together. We have a goat shelter 2.0 that we made as an upgrade. Be sure to check it out. Thanks for watching and asking your question.

    Did you paint just the seams over where you caulked or did you just paint over the entire ceiling. Doing this project and wondering if i can get away with just painting the seams with a paint that matches well. Thanks!

      Hi! We painted the whole ceiling. That is a good idea could try just the seams and see how it goes. Home Depot and lowes should be able to match it if you take it to the paint counter. That way you know what white to get. Watch what finish you get. Make sure to match that also. If this is for a ceiling, I would make sure your ceiling studs are really close together or you have old tongue and groove. If not, they might sag. Just wanted to warn you. We noticed in other parts of our old farmhouse that it began to sag versus this room and had to redo them with actual tongue and groove shiplap. Thanks for watching and asking your question. Have a blessed day!

    Hey y'all. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. I have been wanting to hang these sheets horizontally and doing some research on hot to make the seams look good. A few things: 1) Please provide a link to your exact finish nailer. 2) I would have LOVED to have seen how y'all cut your pieces. It looks to me like you have "staggered" them somehow so as not to have one huge butt seam running down the sealing but I don't remember you talking about this in the video. Thanks again!

      Thank you for your comment and questions. This room is holding up fantastic but noticed in another room where the ceiling studs were farther apart had some sagging. We switched to the single piece shiplap boards. We found them so much better and easier to work with and recommend using those. We used the Ryobi finishing nailer. You can find them at Home Depot or maybe Lowes or Amazon. We got ours from Home Depot. We cut the pieces with a regular circular saw. You are correct, we did stagger them to not have the seams butt up to each other. Although, you could and then put a piece of trim down it for a different look. Thank you again for watching and your comment! Let us know if you have any other questions.

    Hey, this looks great! I'm about to undertake a similar project and I'm wondering how the panels are holding up after 2 years. Have you noticed any sagging, would you have applied glue in or done anything differently?

      That room is still holding up fantastic. However, we did notice some sagging in another room where the studs in the ceiling are farther apart started to sag. We switched out to the shiplap single piece boards. We love them and found them a lot easier to work with. Thank you for watching and your question!

    When my parents were farming we ran a ford 530 baler, this video brought back a lot of memories. Solid baler.

    I seen you had a bale come out with one side longer then the other. How did you get it to make a straight bale. What adjustment did you do?

      All I did was tighten the tensioner on that one side. The spring-loaded tensioner is up inside the twine box. Any more questions let me know.
