Really deserved better than #24 but I guess the lower ranking was because she'd sung so many similar songs before....including "If You Want Me" which charted much higher.

This may be just a haunting song of the loss of a child home. But it could be more than that. It could be a poignant - and mordant - critique of Nashville and the country music business as Malo found it in the 90s/early aughts. If so, it is in the same vein as Alan Jackson's allegorical "Murder on Music Row." I believe this song is Malo's assessment that country music has lost its soul and is hollow inside. The Mr. Jones to whom it is addressed is at one level the protagonist of the narrative but it is more deeply an address to George Jones, the still living at the time reigning king of Country music. Chris and Johnny, the "childhood friends" would make more sense if they were Kris and Johnny, which I haven't seen in any of the official lyrics, but even without evoking Kristoffersen, Johnny stands for Cash and I guess Chris could be Ledoux or someone else. Way off? You decide.

Love this song. John and Nick really do a great job. But in this rendition, I miss the wonderful guitar solo that was recorded in the "Back in Town" a the Hungry I album of 1964. This one just doesn't have the energy or artistry of the original.

One of those songs that have stuck in my memory for forty-six years, since it came out in my years of high school, the early jobs that followed, building cars and engines, fishing, tennis and hockey... this song stayed put and has played in the Muzak tracks of my mind.

I'm five hundred miles away from home. Tear drops fell on Mama's note, When I read the things she wrote. She said, we miss you, Son. We love you. Come on home. Well, I didn't have to pack. I had it all right on my back. Now, I'm five hundred miles away from home. Away from home. Away from home. Cold and tired, and all alone. Yes, I'm five hundred miles away from home. I know this is the same road I took, The day I left home, But, it sure looks different, now. Well, I guess I look different, too, ‘Cause time changes everything. I wonder what they'll say, When they see their boy lookin’ this way. Oh, I wonder what they'll say when I get home. Can't remember when I ate. It's just thumb, and walk, and wait. And I'm still five hundred miles away from home. Well, if my luck had been just right, I'd be with them all tonight. But, I'm still five hundred miles away from home. Away from home, away from home. Cold and tired, and all alone. Yes, I'm still five hundred miles away from home. Oh, I'm still five hundred miles away from home.
