Ah yes, the erroneous belief that workers in capitalism are in "chains".

Thanks for your comment! Marx's 'chains' are a metaphor for systemic constraints in capitalism, like alienation and lack of control over labor. It's an interesting critique, what’s your take on it?

@@philo-sophia Thanks. I think that all these things don't actually exist within capitalism. Firstly, has Marx's 'alienation' description actually been truthful?

@lochnessmunster1189 Thanks for sharing your view! Alienation is a debated concept, and its truthfulness depends on perspective and experience. It’s definitely an interesting topic to reflect on.

@@philo-sophia Cheers- but I'd argue that Marx's view that an employee (I won't use Marx's term 'worker' because he wrongly implies that employers aren't workers too) loses their ability to determine the course of their destiny, is wrong. Gaining employment gives us the ability to shape our lives far better than those without employment. Look at the lives of people in work vs those who are homeless. Also, "the worker loses their ability to define relationships"- we can make friends through our workplace, socialise from our wages. and form romantic relationships and start families as a result of employment. "Loses ability to own those items produced by their own labor"- the opposite is true. Any business which emerges, will have to be competitive, and the result will almost always be a lowering of prices of the finished goods, thus making them more affordable to every single person.

hey @lochnessmunster1189 Thank you for sharing your detailed perspective! You’ve brought up some valid points about the benefits of employment and competition. These debates are what make philosophy so engaging, different views give us all something to think about. Wishing you all the best!

A genuine and useful thinker. In contrast to other Germans; misfits such as the deplorable Nietzsche, the over- negative Schopenhauer and the bombastic, complex Hegel.

@RobertFranklin-of3ow Interesting perspective! Kant certainly stands apart in his clarity and practical approach to philosophy.

Sorry, I'm 63 years old, and I seem to remember that in high school I read about a classical Greek or not-so-classical philosopher who defended the idea that you can teach ethics without being ethical, comparing it to that you can teach geometry without being a perfect figure. I can't remember if I actually read this or imagine it now. Please tell me where I can find information about it.

Hello, @splolier101 It sounds like you're recalling an idea that aligns with the thoughts of Socrates, especially in his dialogues with Plato. Socrates often argued that knowledge, including ethics, could be taught even if the teacher wasn't a perfect example of the virtues they discussed. A relevant discussion can be found in Plato's "Meno", where Socrates explores whether virtue can be taught and how teaching it doesn’t necessarily require the teacher to be the ideal embodiment of that virtue, similar to how one can teach geometry without being a perfect geometric figure. Though I couldn't find an exact quote matching your description, the idea resonates with Socratic philosophy. You might try to explore Socrates' works, particularly those of Plato, for more on these concepts.
