Frodo said back in The Two Towers that the Ring mastered Gollum a long time ago. Holding the Ring, Frodo could have commanded Gollum to do anything and he would have had to obey him.

I can't help wondering, if Gollum hadn't been there, to play his part, "for good or evil, before the end", just what would have happened? If Sam had killed him shortly after this, in their last fight, and Frodo had been left free to claim the Ring in the Sammath Naur. The Ring has been explicitly stated to contain more of Sauron's power than *Sauron* does, and the Ring has been growing ever stronger, as it came closer to Mount Doom. We're also told again and again that the danger if someone too *weak* challenges Sauron with the Ring, is that Sauron will overpower them and get the Ring *back*- but that if someone strong enough to command the Ring- Gandalf, Galadriel, even the non-magic-using Aragorn - that the danger is that they will *replace* Sauron with a new Dark Lord. By the time Frodo puts on the Ring at Orodruin, the combination of his ordeals and his corruption by it have given him that power of Command. Sauron is *terrified* when he finally perceives where the Ring is, and sends the Ringwraiths off at full speed to desperately attempt to reclaim it- but- would that have worked, or would the eight remaining Black Riders suddenly found themselves under new management, if they *had* managed to get to Orodruin in time?

It’s unfortunate that the Peter Jackson version didn’t get this part in. This truly shows how the ring ended up bringing about its own destruction-and it is in the book. You see Gollum had sworn on the ring to do whatever Frodo told him to do. Then, of course when Gollum attacks him and takes the ring-he is destined to fall into the Cracks of Doom.

“The next time you touch me you’ll end up in the fires of Mount Doom!” Well ain’t that the truth.

Out of everything I saw in the cartoons, nothing scared me more than Gollum in Hobbit and ROTK. He scared me at how FREAKY he was. And I heard that the older adaptation from another company was even scarier. 😰😱😭

There's a video I saw recently about the covenant Gollum makes with the ring once he swears on it earlier in the books. And based on how the books describe scenes like this, it was in fact the ring sort of speaking through Frodo here warning Gollum. And that Gollum didn't just trip into the "fires of doom". It was actually the ring betraying Gollum because he bit off Frodo's finger and harmed him like he promised not to do. Very interesting video and I recommend it to any LOTR fans.

Too bad this scene didn't make it into the Peter Jackson movies, always loved it when I heard it in the audioplay and later read it in the book.

I know his eyes look ridiculous but I need to actually watch all these movies at some point. When the Peter Jackson Lord of the rings films were coming out, while I was at a cousin's house I was sort of watching these cartoon movies but then see them all the way through.

None of this makes sense without the context of the first two books. Why does it matter that Gollum is pursuing Frodo and Sam? Where is his promise? Rankin and Bass cut out the story and just told a slipshod joke of the end as “the hobbit two” and everyone liked it because “uwu snappy happy fun songs” For. Shame.

This is effectively the scene where Frodo kills Gollum, in the book the voice doesn't even come from his mouth but from a fire ball at his chest that is where the ring is, the power of the ring curses Gollum, and then he reaches for it again and what was said by Frodo or the ring is exactly what happens to Gollum

For a brief moment, we see the story through Gollum's eyes as Frodo goes from looking meek to looking insurmountably powerful as Frodo lays the curse that will eventually spell doom for him! Storytelling like this has been lost over my lifetime, it's sad to see and the world is a far worse place without it!
