Karpov was young and people forget that Fischer beat Spassky because he figured him out - he was beyond obsessed. Had Fischer remained active, I firmly believe he beats Karpov but that it would have been closer for the first few games. Had they played under the scenario that was with Fischer not being active; I think he loses.

Fischer is overrated. Fischer never dominated Spassky and he struggled with him, even though he could beat him. On the other hand, Karpov, Kasparov, Anand and Carlsen would destroy Spassky. Judit Polgar beat Spassky too.

Fischer is an extremely talented and gifted chess player. But he couldn't waste time and refuse the match with Karpov. Even if he had lost, he would have had the opportunity to take revenge. What he did was not a crime against his own career. It was a crime against chess.

Nah 1975 fisher would mop the floor with him. Maybe a little bit later like 78 or 79. Karpov would won.

Fischer lacked nerve. What's the point of raw skill if you don't have the nerve to hold the title against the combined efforts of the chess world. No champion before Fischer, or since, has shrunk from that challenge. He didn't have what it takes to win and defend a world championship. Which is actually pretty sad that he didn't have the mental health resources and other supports in his life when he was young. If he were born today, with modern mental health support, and being able to train as a child on chess engines, he very well could have a decade plus of world championing under his belt. Doing sponsorships he agrees with, living a pretty good life. The idea of breaking international law and being a stooge for an embargoed country would be unthinkable to this hypothetical Fischer. Then again, growing up with the internet, with conspiracy theories and social media bubbles reinforcing quite frankly insane beliefs, maybe Fischer would be worse off today. Anyway Karpov was the better chess player, even if Fischer had a better natural affinity for winning at chess. Karpov would have won in 1978 for certain, probably 1975 too considering how completely unhinged Fischer was at that point.

Karpov seems to have had a good attitude about it. Interesting that there were political issues on his side as well. I would really have liked to see that match, as Fischer was clearly the best attacker in the world, and Karpov very probably the best defender.

Speculating Fischer's level after 3 years of assumed halt of study is ludicrous and impossible to evaluate. What we know for a fact is that Fischer from 1971/1972 would comfortably beat Karpov in 1975.

Without more information, Fischer would have won, 75 rating points is a lot. However, we need to know the answer to these questions before we can begin to answer that question. 1. How much chess did Fischer play and study between 1972-75. I suspect very little (we know that he didn't play any competitive chess). 2. How much time would FIDE give Fischer to prepare for the match? 3. How much had Fischer’s mental illness taken a toll on Fischer’s mental capabilities in 1975?

karpov was not at his best in 1975. His play during his winning match against korchnoi in 1974 was not convincing. He would have lose against fischer. The karpov of 1981-1984 would have been a toughest opponent.

In chess terms: Magnus is talking about advantages in the end game that are invisible to engines because they see all the solutions to the tactical complications, but are visible to humans because they can't calculate everything. Instead humans require imagination and creativity to come up with these ideas and counter-ideas to create or nullify various endgame advantages. Magnus excels at finding these ideas at all stages of the game.

I think the "fighting spirit" he mentions is key. Carlsen considers himself an athlete and like all sports, your ability to continue fighting is a key at the highest levels.
