Bach: A tale of 2 Bourrees on 2 basses
I had been working on recording the Bourree’s from the 3rd suite (in C Major!) with repeats, in the wonderful acoustic of the 2nd floor hallway at PSU’s Lincoln Hall, when I decided to change things up a bit. Here is a direct comparison of my two instruments- a Jakstadt c. 2001, and a Joseph Hill, c. 1780. (the darker bass). Typically I would use the Jakstadt for auditions, recitals, and solo playing, and play the Hill in the orchestra.
I put my iPad about 15-20 feet out to get an idea of how the basses sound in the acoustic. The bow I used is my baroque bow by David Van Edwards. For the da capo, I recorded it complete on each bass, so stick around until the end! The playing isn’t perfec...

Questioning the Answer (original composition by Colin Corner)

This is an original track I recorded during the pandemic. I recorded the bass, keys and drums on GarageBand originally and finished on Logic. The double bass part is very free, and begs to question our understanding of what the answer means.

#176 from Calendario do Som by Hermeto Pascoal. An extremely difficult set of chord changes. I feel like each tune form this book is an adventure! I recorded the drums, but at the moment I cannot figure out how to make a split screen video in iMovie or Final Cut with 3 videos (any advice appreciated!)

@@calembourman2295 I don’t remember what exactly I played, but it was all from the Met Opera Assistant Principal Bass list in 2023. I numbered each except, put them all into a hat, and drew 3 random rounds to record as part of the prep process. It was really good to record everything. Most of these excerpts show up on most of the bass auditions in recent years at the Met. They are all from standard operas.

Quite different qualities but both very good-sounding instruments! To me, the Jakstadt is less dense (less complex?) so it sounds clearer than the Hill. To be fair, its tone is probably benefiting more from this reverberant acoustic than the Hill. I have a similar choice of instruments and agree with how you divide duties between each. There's no doubt simpler sounding, strong and clear basses perform very well in auditions. For ensemble playing, I imagine the thicker, more complicated but still clear tone of the Hill is better. Nice that you have two good options to work with! 👏👏👏

Very interesting experiment! May be a little 2 much natural reverb for me (But it is nice and a lot of fun to play in a space like that I must admit!)- but it also brings up the whole issue of playing Bach on the bass. It's so hard to make it sing because we don't have the same harmonic color of / that the cello gives, and because it's in such a high register it's technically very difficult and not as resonate as the lower registers that the bass is so good at. As such both of these basses to me sound a little chocked - I'm thinking there are possibly 3 reasons for this. 1 string height - are they are set up as orchestral instruments? string height may be a bit much to get the upper register to sing, also some times finger board set up can effect the higher register 2 string type it might be worth experimenting with solo or lighter gauge strings - may be tuned to orchestral pitch? Also bridge height - and or a paired back bridge like Joel Quarrington's may help to get the instrument to sing a little more. It's so valuable to play Bach on the bass - because it presents so many, many challenges and to do it very well - is insanely difficult. Thank you for putting this out (it's over 30 years since I've played) there is no way I cold play like this without a couple of years - probably more of practice so I do really appreciate your effort and skill - would love to hear something from both basses in the lower register - maybe something modern (Walker - Chorale) do you do requests? 🙂 Anyway thanks for putting up with my ranting and would love to hear more.

The Jackstadt has a more precise sound to it. It's definitely a brighter sounding bass, but the clarity is quite amazing! I'm not quite able to see the strings on each bass. Silks look like Bel Canto or Flexocor Deluxes on each bass. Also curious on the string lengths/measurements on each. The Hill bass sounds like it would be a subwoofer in the low/middle range of the bass! All subjective, but those are my thoughts!

@@matthewmartinez3079 you are right! I usually feel better for solo and auditions on the Jakstadt. The Jakstadt has the prototype spiro/bel canto hybrids on and the Hill has soiro mediums. I prefer the hill playing orchestral/chamber music
