What is the Purpose of a Loop in the Exhaust? Honda Grom Zoom loop exhaust
Просмотров 7 тыс.21 день назад
It's for tuning the length of the pipe to better suit an application. People say it's for "back pressure" but don't know what that means. It's not for increasing pressure in the exhaust, it's for reducing pressure at the exact moment the exhaust valve opens. Thereby creating a little vacuum effect to suck gasses out of the cylinder. This is why NA race engines want equal length headers and also...

ZoOM loop Exhaust Compatible for GROM MSX125 2022 Full System
So then would you say a stock exhaust would probably get you better performance than mindlessly straight pipe it?
Loving your videos. So I have 2025 Grom, and my mods are Zoom loop exhaust no baffle, TST air box cover, DHM Ecu flash stage 1. Will I feel a difference when I put in the db killer to what I’m running now. I am thinking about doing the cam & sprocket later.
Simple Green and it's safe on your metals
That’s what I hear 👍👍👍
If you damp a rag with gas it cleans the rims off really easily
Nice!
This was very good info, the V4 is tempting but my wallet will not approve ... what is that tank mount you are using for the phone? I have not see that before.
Dude I'm not gonna lie. When I saw the into of you doing wheelies and top speed runs, I had an image in my mind of what the rider might look like. When you showed your face on camera I legitimately laughed. Then when you said that your background was in boosted civics I burst out laughing. I absolutely love it. It makes me happy when people don't fit neatly into the boxes people expect.
Im looking to get into mini moto racing here in Japan. Do you have any insight on getting a street legal grom and modifying it for the track vs. getting a HRC grom?
So glad I found your channel! Looking forward to more videos
Where has this channel been hiding?!
Was the flywheel reverse threaded? That’s how it appear in your video. I’m about to do this.
Nice bike dude
Thanks man, I love riding it!
Where'd you get the short Cat'-Converter insert? ("amazon GP DB killer type thing", "catalytic converter type piece") Is it a Catalytic converter...I assume not (?)
a.co/d/1xRYNia
@@0to60eventually_youtube amazon says it is a real catalyst too. Thanks for the reply!
From my drag racing days, I recall that the PRIMARY pipes (i.e. BEFORE the 'collector' on multi-cylinder engines) were tuned for specific rpm's. In general, shorter primary pipes increased high rpm power; longer primary pipes increased lower rpm torque. I envy the FUN you're having figuring out better performance than the Honda engineers, who've made millions of that engine. 🤩
Interesting! Yes, good point.. Honda knows what they are doing for sure. I assume gas mileage and stock gearing is in there equations… once o changed air volume, cams, gears and don’t care about gas mileage… makes sense to change.. Best bang for the buck is sprocket, airbox and just reset the stock ecu… leave exhaust alone and enjoy the bike
@@0to60eventually_youtube I've read that, as of 2017, Honda sold 100 million of various models, using that engine. I suspect that most of those sales were in countries with mostly dirt roads and few, if any, highways. Why do they need to go faster than 40 mph? In many such places, 87 octane fuel is scarce. I suspect that the Honda intake air-box is 'tuned' for low rpm torque? ... usually overlooked by those seeking high rpm power. ... same with Honda's choice of sprockets/gearing. I'm not quick to assume that an outfit, which sold over 100 million of something, doesn't know what they're doing! 😛
No expert here but that motocross chain is not "0" ring? Are Groms not running "0" ring chains as standard? I can see how an "0" ring chain might be a drag on a small engine but the life span between the two chains is quite significant. Also, please be careful about spinning the wheel while running a rag along the chain. Ouch!
I went down the rabbit hole on zero ring chains a couple years ago. My research popped up as extremely negligible at best. Good point though.. it would make for a good video to do a side by side test with top speed runs.
@@0to60eventually_youtube I only mention this because I'm old enough to remember when there was no such thing as "0" ring chains. Back in those days chain adjustment and lube was a very regular thing and they wore out fast. Todays "0" ring chains were a major game changer whose performance we now take for granted. This caught my attention because I mistakenly ordered a Motocross chain for my Triumph Scrambler. I put it on anyway because I wanted to ride but I expect to be replacing a lot sooner than the almost 30k km chain I replaced.
i use a motocross MXU u ring chain. best sealing out of all other chains
What’s the standard valve clearance
Good video, but you need to remove those subtitles, they’re distracting af.
Thanks for the feedback, I'll see about making it less distracting.
Is the loop setup the same as "powerbomb" (bulge chamber) in the middle of the pipe? Im thinking for a full-system pipe without the cat and some said that single cylinder do need some kind of restriction, hence the powerbomb suggestion. Great video btw
Bulge is for 2 strokes. There is no restriction due to the length of pipe(counterintuitive I know.)
Were talking reversion wave. Big thing on Harleys. Have you tried no restriction exhaust with a washer set back one inch from end of exhaust. Aka lollypop.
The Wisdom you share with us for free thank you sir!
My pleasure!
Very interesting to see an analytical approach to your motorcycle's performance instead of relying on urban myths like the rest of us. I just bought a pristine 2015 Ducati Scrambler with no mods whatsoever and the first thing my biker buddies asked was... are you getting a termignoni? And while I would like to get one eventually directly from Ducati (with cat) so it's legal and passes Swiss periodic technical inspections, it's not a priority. Stickier tyres, assuring proper maintenance and mostly riding the thing are my priorities. A loud exhaust is not! I've been dreaming of owning a motorcycle since I was 12 and I'm 46 now. I'll have time to tinker later. Great video! Definitely subscribing!
Thanks, I agree, it's all about the riding. Glad you're enjoying the video!
change intake or exhaust = need tuned ecu for each set up for best ppower
Intake = ecu reset (no flash/tune) InTake + slip on = ecu reset (no flash/tune) Full exhaust + intake = flash/tune and ecu reset
humm long tube headers are good...wow
Cool looking grom. I still dont understand why anyone would buy one and not a real motorcycle. Maybe is the wheely thing?
It’s a weird human behavior for sure. 4k pulse 2k in mods to go slower than a R3 or a Honda rebel 🤣. Short answer is if mopeds are fun, then these are even more fun… when you get into 300’s or bigger you have to get more responsible… 😎😂
@0to60eventually_youtube I guess people see them as a bicycle and dont even wear a helmet.. who knows. I started ridding motorcycles 6 years ago. I had 3 cars and figured maybe I get a scooter for short 10 minute trips and to avoid paying for parking. Then I saw shitty 50cc scooters.. then I'm like, I could never buy that. Then saw 125cc and they barely do 35mph... then some 200cc. Meh. And then I said, for the same price I can get an 1100cc bike and turn it into a bobber and actually own something cool. So 10 motorcycles later, I still don't have a scooter lol.
You can get away with doing a lot of dumb stuff unscathed while on a smaller bike. Stuff that will get you killed on a bigger bike.
If can't get these bikes up to 100mph, you can't crash these bikes at 100mph.
You can easily die at 50mph if you are unlucky 😅. Technically if your head hits the cement floor with no helmet at 3-4 feet, you can meet your maker. Always wear protection, even on a scooter.
I believe what happens is once your exhaust gas is back in the atmosphere, it has drops of Jupiter in its hair.
Nice… 90s throw back.
Wow, this was recommended to me by RUclips! Such a cool video
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
what rack is that?
Not sure, it was on it when I bought it
How did you get the length of the header pipe?
Just purchased the pipe, had DHM tune the ecu for a “yoshimira loop pipe” and started trial and error. The way to load exhaust kept me going back in with the Db killers … and got lucky over time
To be honest a slip on with a tune would probably be the best balance between sound and power access
I race WERA and work with a guy that knows these things. It's all true. You have to tune it for torque where you want it.
The science is deepAF .. hats of to the real runners out there
@@0to60eventually_youtube Its not really science if anything its all math when it comes down to it (sizes, ratios and shapes) Anybody with half a brain can learn how an engine works, how to spot bottlenecks and how different parts will affect an engines performance through the powerband.
Not many tuners have figured this stuff out. Kudos to you sir.
The science is deepAF - hats off the all the real tunners out there.. and thanks to the good quality “bolt on” companies that figure it out and sale us the good stuff
We used to do this with 2-stroke racing exhausts back in the 90's, in the 'stinger' section of the pipe after the compression cone but before the backbox can. We'd have various loops of different lengths called 'pig tails' that sleeved into the cone, to alter the length of the stinger protruding inside of the cone while maintaining the tune of the pipe. So, for less protrusion, we'd have a bigger loop outside of it. We eventually came up with stingers of different diameters and shapes to do the same thing. The point of it was to smooth the transition into the powerband, to stop the bike from suddenly overwhelming the tyre when you come out of a corner and crank the throttle on. Used to see all sorts of weird and wonderful things, from telescopic variable-length pipes that were driven from servo-motors depending on engine rpm + load, to 'snake's head' header pipes on both 4-strokes and 2-strokes, that contained a portion of the expansion phase in the header by being flat but wider. Crazy times those were. Eventually, computers and accurate gasflow simulations came in to make tuned pipes, but it was all based off the data gathered by those old Mad Scientists in garden sheds.
I installed a Decha stealth air intake tube and drilled some holes in my air box, a good noise and plenty of oxygen. I tried an eBay exhaust and it was too loud even with the baffle. I'm keeping the stock exhaust on. It allows me to fit a Kitaco skid plate as well. I really want the zoom loop pipe but allow me to put on my own slip on.
Yep, I can relate. I found a slip on pipe along time ago, allowing to leave stock header pipe, which is tuned well for the engine. Air intake, slip on would allow to run it with no tune.. that plus one less tooth on the front is a nice bang for the buck..
Love your grom videos, keep them coming.
I have a bunch more grom goodness coming soon! 😁
I just ordered the V3 on Amazon, it was 40% off so I got it for about $350
Saweet!
Thanks for the video... it helped my choice... ordering the v4... the v3 is really nice tho. I got it in today but was too small... it's very nice tho but the neck, elbows and size, the v4 seems a better pick for me... again, Thanks for the video...
how you like the grom on the kart track ? what mods have you done ? is it custom rearsets?
Love it. Tires, sato rearsets, pro taper bars, air intake, cam, exhaust, tune, sprocket
@0to60eventually_youtube what sprocket you would recommend ? It increases acceleration or top speed ?
Hi, in the video you say your size is 50. What are your measurements? Your height? Chest? Waist? Does it correspond to the Alpinestar size guide?
40” chest. 5’5” 145lb
is the rideknit stretchy ?
@@chopchopsuey1263 yes
Yes sir!
Are you running stock gearing?
i hit Like button because i have r3 to AHAHAHA more video to come!
Alll these just reduces the life span of your bike. It'll be fun tho..
Hi! I really enjoyed your video and the quality looks amazing. Could you share what camera you used for this video? I’d love to know more about the equipment you’re using. Thanks so much!
Sony a7s3, 18mm1.8gm, 24mm1.4gm, 50mm1.2gm and a 85mm1.4sigma and the action camera I have now is action pro 5. Pico mics, Sennheiser MK 600 shotgun, rode mics and DJI mic
Just wanna say thank you for sharing this video. Literally getting all my buddies and my wife on these to do track racing like this. Im sitting at work and just stupidly excited about this decision.
Hell yeah! Love it!
Dope video MvP
Hi, how did you set the speed dial? What do you mean by the speed too? I understand the two other dials, the resistance & range one but confused on the speed. Also did you leave the range on max? Thanks
I just installed this on my '18 SF Grom. The mounting hardware installed just fine; no metal tabs to grind off. HOWEVER I did have to shave the front of my gas tank plastics similar to yours, though I think you shaved off way more on yours than I did on mine.. I have a ProTaper bar as well, and I think the cross bar sits just too close to the steering damper IMO; I like it to be easily accessible instead of digging around a crossbar, but each to their own! Overall it's an awesome upgrade for high speed runts 😀
Did you ever plan to adjust your shift light looked like it was still at factory setting
Where can I buy this exhaust? ZoOM channel's lastest video is for the older Grom, younger than 2022.
I found this on Amazon
@@0to60eventually_youtube I've tried looking it up on Amazon, but didn't see this exact one.
Wouldnt a loop constrict flow. No tx
Nope, if you Google around you will find MotoGP motorcycles with loop ex exhaust under their tails.
Just added to my 2023, was not to bad of an install would be nice if Honda had noit put the 2 brackets there, or the vendor had made slots.
I've gone from car --> ebike --> vespa -- g310gs --> Grom (tomorrow morning!). Your videos really helped me understand this is literally the perfect bike for me as an 50 year old head that used to have a trackday habit in cars. These really are the spec miata's of the motorcycle world. So cool. Thanks for the vids man keep them coming.
