Murphy's Law Monday Blues Jam, Sunnyvale, CA Oct 7 2019
Five years ago I brought my new Panasonic GH5 video camera to the blues jam at Murphy's Law in Sunnyvale California to test it out. The Monday night blues jam was hosted by Jim Dewrance, Johnny Cat, Scott Griffin, and Keith Milne that night. Little did I realize how much the world would change in the next few years. Here's a slice of 5 years ago, a better place a better time. A moment recorded by happenstance that ended up being a treasured memory of a famous Sunnyvale establishment, that is no longer.

A/DA Flanger with Fender Strat and Deluxe Reverb
I liked the C12Q and the Reignmaker about equally, followed by the C12N. The others I didn't care for so much. Listened through my AT studio headphones.
Freddie King returns
Cannabis Rex = Swiss Army Knife
The Bugera Lost a Lot of Bottom End !
Jensens sound brittle
C12k or c12n
Fryette with my vintage amp’s - You can’t even begin to appreciate what it does from this video. No disrespect intended. Previously owned PS100 now I have PS2a Tame my Brown Deluxe 6g3 - Vox AC30 - AC15 - JTM45

@Chris Allen Question: I have an old Kustom K50 tuck-n-roll amp that is solid state, 25 watts RMS. Would the C12Q handle the peak power, or should I go with the C12N?
Try the Jensen MOD-50 that's been my favorite speaker for fender combos and it would work good in that amp too I'd bet.
Love JBL tone, it tends to give that smooth round tone match dearly with single coils attack, heard many times on SRV tone
This is by far the best "speaker shootout" on RUclips...Thank You! The C12N is my favorite.
the purpose is to have your amp cranked isnt it??? yours is on 4.5/5!?
Eminence swamp thang tops them all and it's not even in the test. I put this thang in a lopoline cab with a Quilter superblock US and it sounds as good as my 68' deluxe with a Celestion G12-65 for a third of the price! You're welcome!
my strategy has always been ...play without an attenuator till my neighbors move out and then put the 4x12 cab in their apartment to save my eardrums
Wanna sell me that eminence? I can’t find them anywhere.
The Eminence Legend 1518 is the best 15" speaker I've ever heard. Actually, they're one of the best speakers I've ever heard period. A well designed 1x15 cabinet with a Legend 1518 in it sounds like a 4x12 with Greenbacks. Ironically the Celestion Fullback 15" sounds awful. It's all choked up with Mids. I looked up the frequency response graph on Celestion's website and that explains it. There is a huge roll off of the bass starting at 150 Hz. Then it's flat from 150 Hz through all the low mids until there is a small bump at 900 Hz. Another small bump in the high mids and that's it. That's what makes it sound small and boxy (all Mids). The Legend 1518 sounds WAY better. Most online retailers like Sweetwater stock them for $145 USD.
do i need volume pedal if i have already attenuator?
I just replaced the c12k with a q,,, holy moly, the difference is incredible, it’s like a totally different amp (65drri)! The playing volume now is around 5 instead of 2-3. The articulation that is there now makes it fun to play. I’m a strat player, now all positions are like butter! The K now I realize is such a tonal blanket. Even fuzz pedals now are playable and fuzz … I couldn’t do this before. I would say I can hear the overall tone is possibly more tweed-ish sounding, and the bass response a little more flubby, but overall, a huge improvement from K. Based on this video, C12N sounds like the better option perhaps to tighten up the bass, and keep the articulation. For me, i probably would get another drri, have one with q and one with n. I am absolutely loving this C12Q,,, fender should ship the reissues with N, K sounds too sterile. Thank you for your video demo, it helped me do this upgrade, I should done this a long time ago
After listening to Jensen C12K, the rest is all trash.
Great music! Thanks for sharing Chris. Greetings from the south west coast of the island of Australia.
Your playing is excellent man! Nice comparison video. Ty.
if you want an aftermarket speaker why go for the bad ones? modern jensen speakers are just awful, ive put 2 c12k in a twin it never breaks in and sounds harsh and bright. jensen stopped making guitar speakers since the 60's and started from zero decades later without a clue, they had to buy used speakers on ebay and reverse engineer them, we all know how that works out with pickups and everything in guitar sound, avoid jensen.
Too me they all had sort of a farty flabby sound. JBL D130f or D121F is the way to go. I have a 64 vibroverb that has the D130f. I don't know if it was original, but is period correct to the amp. Sounds stunning.
It was probably farting because of an inferior phone or computer speaker. I heard no farting in any.
All Eminence‘s are good to me
I love JBL, but the E120 (while okay in other applications), sounds sterile and one dimensional in a guitar amp. This speaker lack the complex harmonics you hear in well know guitar speakers like the Vintage 30.
Fullback wins it hands down. Definitely has a more well rounded and clear midrange bite. Kinda has vintage 30 properties. Which is a good thing. I do wish there were more options in the 15” speaker market. I don’t know why they can’t make basically every model that’s available in 12” available in 15”.
Great comparison video, bravo! Really surprised by how much I liked the Fullback, probably going with that one. Other surprise is how much I didn't really enjoy the JBL's too much, sounds congested to me... Cheers!
Love the playing man!
C12K sounds best to me. I want clean tone with headroom. If I wanted a little bit more rock tone it would be the C12N. Jensen nails the Fender sound like nothing else. Strangely I had a 12" Cannabis Rex in my Princeton and it sounded great.
The reign maker is a joke! I always played it at it’s max setting because it lost its tone when you turned the attenuator down. The governor is the best red that emenince makes imo
Fryette is thr ɓest you can get. If you cant afford one , check out the HO attenuator or Magus Ultimate Attenuator. Theyre similar to the fryette as they all re-amp your signal . Ive built lots of old school resistive Lpad ones. And a trainwreck one. Theyre ok but the HO is a huge step up. It has a variac setting as well to run your.amp at 93 volts.
Good demo. A little reverb might be a good idea next time... The 100 watt C12K, the Lowest volume Reignmaker and the Cannabis Rex for an "honorable mention". Thanks for posting!
The Fryette PS-1 is still the best option today.
I have a Reignmaker. It's a good speaker. I went to buy another and discovered it discontinued. Why? It was the only affordable speaker that could be turned down for bedroom playing. The one I have I can adjust to match levels with other speakers I use. Very useful.
C12Q for the win
Thanks, great video! I have a 85w fender 65 twin reverb amp, wondering if I could use the Bugera on a 85W amp
I believe the max is 50w for the Bugera
EXCELLENT!
Thanks, thanks, thanks!!!!
Very cool and informative video. I picked one up but I wasn’t able to test the reverb because there was no pedal. I grabbed a pedal and when I turn the reverb on there’s barely any reverb and there a TON of bad noise so I got to figure that out.
JBL. But none of them had much bass to them ... were you just not running much bass knob?
Wow. The fryette won hands down!
That celestion sounds too tight and sterile, like it def needs more break in,,,, the JBL seemed just the opposite like it was a little bit tired. The emminence seemed to be a general all around consistient match overall for thst amp. It was not anything super special but just seemed just about like what it should be expected. Surely Stevies tone did not rely on a specific speaker and I would believe that his choices werent 100 percent tone. He likely considered many things when deciding what speaker was loaded in his cabs
Fryette makes the guitar become one dimensional. Really dont like that. All the tone gets lost with the unnecessary extra power stage (compare with PS1) . Just use a simple powersoak and you wont get this tone-loss. The only great use for the fryette is to boost the output of very small amps. There it is unchallenged.
I play bass and have K151-4 ohms 18 inches speakers and they are Alnico, don't remember the year I bought them
1) Get a low-powered amp and change the V1 preamp tube to a 12AT7. (Tip: don't ever buy anything more powerful that a Princeton or like.) There's a reason that those things are overpriced. 2) Get a _really_ low-powered amp and don't do anything. 3) See a psychiatrist to address your obsession with loud music or really loud distortion, like setting up a blast room in your basement for those 100 watt Marshalls. ...Sheesh. Instead, get a CHEAP pedal such as those offered by Joyo. They're all pretty much clones of one another. 4) Or...do like I did and see an audiologist to address your loss of hearing after you've waited way too late in the game to get over your delusion that all that loud stuff (including, but certainly not limited to music) isn't going to come back and bite you. Tip: hearing aids are useless to correct nerve damage. Once you lose it, you will never get it back. 5) Meanwhile, consider that what you're eventually hearing from tube amps is a lot of the time being piped through solid state equipment. You think all those tube amps being miked you're hearing at concerts are going through $60k worth of tube equipment to reach your ears? Likewise, are you listening to all these tube amp videos on YT through a gaggle of tube equipment? The controlled environment of the recording studio is far different from real life. 6) Don't concern yourself with the Fryette - even though they're still supposedly in business, they're as rare as hen's teeth now when it comes to actually _finding_ one for sale. 7) Unless you're as crazy as I am, just go with the Bugera. I went with the Waza (by Boss) Tube Amp Expander, and ONLY because I got it for $789 on Amazon as "used." (It wasn't, actually - it was brand new.) It re-amps (and attenuates) the tube signal through - you guessed it - a solid state amp of it's own. Plus, it has an effects loop...and it gets me lots of wimmen who beg and plead to ogle at all its routing parameters and the vintage-type knobs, etc. It has like 2 million ground-lift switches. But what do you expect for 789 bucks.
Fryette has a video about changing the tubes and fuses. The tubes don't need to by biased in the Power Station.
The Jensen's all sound so much better than the Eminence, it was not even close. Why are people always complaining about Italian Jensons? The C12N sounded very good. Also Why does the Jensen C12K sound more bass and than the C12N and then the C12Q? The only difference is wattage? Why do they sound so different?
I'm no expert but the C12K is 100w and has a thicker cone. The 50w C12N will overdrive sooner.
I think that amp sounds awful no matter what speaker you put in it.
The C12N is my all time favorite speaker . I had the original C15N in my 60’s Valco Supro and blew it . I replaced with a new Italian made Jensen C15N and noticed that the new C15N has a slightly larger voice coil diameter than the originals did - but it was soon after putting that new Jensen in that I was sound checking at a gig in my favorite bar (playing my Strat through a Fulltone Fulldrive MOSFET 2 ) that I looked over in disbelief, realizing that for the very first time in 40 years I had found the God tone ! I also had a rotovibe and a cracked cry baby wah on my board that day and it was Robin Trower on steroids as well . Best speaker in the universe for blues/rock/country/
Sound the same to me
I recently picked up 6 ADJ pars for free. I plan on doing the same thing.
