BIG Shad on Columbia River at Bonneville Dam | Prime Time Shad Run (Over 100,000 Migratory Fish)
We hit Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River during the peak of the 2024 Shad run and caught some seriously BIG fish! It was one of the biggest collections of Shad we have ever caught! Well over 100,000 fish crossed over the Dam on this day. For those who don't know, Shad are a migratory fish in the Herring family, that spends most of its life in the ocean before returning to the same rivers and creeks they were born at to spawn. They are technically an invasive species, which is why there is no limit on these fish! They are hard fighting and on good days will be non-stop action! So much fun!
We highly encourage you to get out there and get yourself some shad while you still can. The run is...

      It's so hard to say regarding all the ins and outs but generally Detroit seems to be rebounding well. How it looks now compared to right after the fires is encouraging and businesses seem to be flourishing (of course they always do better in the spring and summer). Surrounding areas look much better after all the timber clean up and removal. It's just jarring to be able to see all the way down to the river because we got so used to the beautiful, thick trees that lined highway 22. I can't speak on much else other than I'm enjoying seeing busy campsites and food trucks and Mountain High Grocery always popping! Those are some nice ones. It Goes to show you that you don't need to spend a lot of money & time to catch farm trout.if your there on the right day they will bite. I use to fish there but I prefer fishing on the river or other places. I use single hooks or pinch down the barb & release everything I catch unharmed.

    • @northwestweekenders
      @northwestweekenders 23 дня назад

      Absolutely! We definitely want to get into more river fishing. We're hitting the shad really hard right now on the Columbia and have been fishing the santiam for Trout. Salmon and some ocean fishing as well but trout is just so convenient. Pinching down the barbs is great. Makes for a more fair fight and releasing them unharmed like you said.

      Detroit Lake, Trillium Lake, Devils Lake in Lincoln City. There are lots of good places further East like Crane Prairie, Pine Hollow, Paulina, Prineville and more. All should produce fish. We're most familiar with Detroit and Devils, and then Trillium. So many great options though from the coast to the mountains, so take your pick and enjoy!

    I don't like o eat this fish either, what's the limit per person? Isn't Bonneville quite a drive?

    • @northwestweekenders
      @northwestweekenders 25 дней назад

      No limit. Bonneville from Salem/Keizer is about 80-90 minute drive. I make it from my place in about 1 hour and 15 mins without traffic. Really not a bad drive!

      This was last Saturday 5/25. We are newer to shad fishing too and it isn’t overly complicated. Definitely switch up retrievals until you find a pattern and then stick to it! Thanks for watching, we will have more shad content as the season goes on 🤙

      I forgot the name but there is a website the post the runs so you can see when it gets good. Last year I fished close to the dam and caught 86 of them. I think I was fishing either a 1/2 or 3/8 weight and I would let it sit for 7-10 sec before a reeled it in slow

    • @rickyyym
      @rickyyym 26 дней назад

      I was also using a 5-6ft leader, I hope this helps you out

    • @northwestweekenders
      @northwestweekenders 25 дней назад

      @@rickyyym Yes, we use the Fish Passage Center to find the counts and keep a close eye. Last year we went when the run was over 100k which was wild. I (Danny) actually just got back from Shad fishing today and still haven't got a count yet but I'm guessing I caught around 100. Pretty fun and pretty dang easy! Amazing crab bait for us for the whole year. 🤙

    • @northwestweekenders
      @northwestweekenders 25 дней назад

      @@rickyyym We usually run 1/2 oz to 1 oz and do exactly that. We've let it sink until we feel like we're in the strike zone and then reel it slow. We find some days they are biting deeper down and others we catch with a quicker top water retrieve. But more often than not it's been the slow play like you said.
