2 Podcast for the price of one! In the Book Club we read through the super hero web serial Worm, by J.C. McCrae and discuss. For veteran readers, we suggest the sister podcast, Dissecting Worm, where we work on adapting Worm for television.
Arc 29: Venom

Dissecting Worm - Season 3 Recap; Arcs 15-19
The garden does get a name in the story. Imp decided to name it Fuckster in 29.8
Pretty sure Abbadon was made up in the comments to the chapter it appeared in.
2:09:00 and now you can remember Echidna and the implication that Taylor had a second trigger.
I thought I got Satyr’s thing, but I don’t remember anymore. I’ll have to reread to see if I can figure it out.
1:13:20 mastermind, not masterclass, I believe
whenever I think of the word venom, i can't help but think of the villain/antihero...
If you change the ending too much, you can’t make the sequel
Khepri was foreshadowed. It was only shortly before it happened that “I willed [blank] to do [blank]” started appearing in the text. As far as I remember anyway. Edit: there were other things as well, in the entities interlude you may notice that her shard was intentionally limited, also the crabs. And other things I’m forgetting I’m sure.
Tav is the last letter in the Hebrew alphabet, is that the letter you're talking about?
I thought Saint was given Thinker powers, not Tinker powers. So the Tinker rating is definitely from the suits.
Just in time for work 💪
You don’t need to straight up show Taylor shooting Aster, you can just imply it. Show her aiming, cut to the next scene. Next she says “you may find Aster’s body there” or something in that vein.
Tattletale already figures entities out right before Scion goes rogue
Emmas family is giving taylor dirty looks because they blame taylor for emma kling herself.
All of the case 53s are eden shards. Also, all of the eden shards are dead- which to a shard means its disconnected feom the “network” aka the entities it came from, meaning it cant trade resources and information within that network, which is why all he case 53s are varying levels of fucked up- their shards were improvising when manipulating their biologies and the limits of their powers, which is why a lot of case 53s like narwhal can bypass the manton effect. Speaking of, the manton effect is not a matter of not being able to manipulate organic matter(amy is the prime example, she can *only* manipulate organic, *living*, matter) its a matter of targetting, an artificial limits imposed on shards so that their hosts dont kill each other too quickly. Its the reason why taylor only can manipulate bugs, and rachel can use her powers on dogs. Also, lisas shard is from abaddon, the fandom named third entity. Finally, i dont remember if you talked about it, but we see dinahs, inps and taylors shards in this chapter. Dinahs futuresight shard, imps perception filter(she is seen by he warrior with her dad after leviathan) and taylors manipulation(its the central nervous system of the entities, the one they use to break off and change them to their specifications, and controls a othr shards, and was crippled to a fraction of its powers avoid disruption in the cycle(lol)).
Howdy y'all I'm an American and I celebrate the 4th of July, when the founding fathers declared independence so they could marry their cousins HOOOOEY
Take that, you worm!
Around 2:15. SPOILERS for Fortuna's interlude: It IS Contessa's shard because that's how Eden got 'lost', and that was the core of the Thinker half of the pair. This power is what was used to plan where to place all of the powers in space and time to find their host so that they best mature to continue the cycle. You'll see it in Contessa's interlude I believe because it starts out from Eden's perspective. She accidentally gives up the power too early before plotting out the whole course.
My impression is Aster was a mercy kill
R.I.P. Aster
100% this. That or have her in the hands of Bonesaw or Gray Boy, a clear choice for Taylor. #TaylorDidNothingWrong
1:09:49, ok, but it’s not clear this way anyway. What if she’s only passed out?
1:09:20 I mean, she comes back (kind of) so you can keep the implication to make people second guess when she does, only to reveal that she was dead all along.
1:03:47 or you can place the reveal earlier as well
2:28:58 do they ever call themselves that? I was under the impression this name was a fandom invention.
1:14:33 suspension of disbelief?
58:55 well, can his hands affect anything else? If not, no violation of the Manton effect here.
You want to show the new endbringers during a season finale? How about this? Scion kills Behemoth. A moment of silence as everyone processes what just happened. The camera pans to a number of important people’s reactions. There is no dialogue, only music. A new broadcast fades into the background announcing to the world that an endbringer has been defeated. It cycles through a number of languages as the world celebrates and the camera pans to people watching the news and throwing parties. The broadcasts continue to celebrate, but the underlying music shifts as the camera hard cuts to an alley as Khonsu teleports into existence. Then the camera cuts again to a distant shot of a city as Bohu and Tohu rise out of the center as the music swells to a climax. The broadcast cuts, cut to the title card.
@@TalonOfoalain You cooked! Love it
Alternatively, how about ending it on a shot of Khonsu’s shadow? Not quite revealing him yet, but hinting that things aren’t as good as they seem.
😭I can't believe it, if felt like only yesterday we were on arc 1 and now we're already on Arc 25, oh how the time flies 🕙
@@ExtemporaneousnessOne Right?!
I'm surprised that you guys haven't cut the other Endbringers because I don't think they add that much to the story in the long run. If you need consequences for Behemoth being beaten then just have Leviathan and simurg ramp up their attacks so it's harder to fight them. Add mecha Leviathan sooner. Those are my two cents.
Regarding Cody. You can condense his part quite a lot. The important bit to hit here is how terrifying Simurgh truly is. It’s enough that he shows up, is recognised, and fucks something up, that’s it. All the inner thoughts and backstory can be thrown away, imo.
How dare you even suggest getting rid of Mouse Protector?
Giving Regent more moments risks making his death obvious and taking some emotional away, rather than adding it.
I regret slightly not starting with Ward now
I think having Behemoth on the smaller side is important, because it has to feel somewhat beatable AT FIRST, before the despair hits.
How can you move on from the Undersiders? I never moved on.
1:16:29 I mean, it’s been like what, two months since the start of the story?
@@couldntcareless7884 right?!
The only real reason to keep Cody is because it hints at the Smurf’s capabilities. And iirc, at this point in the story, the audience really has no idea what she is capable of beyond a story that Tagg brings up.
I was not a fan of the slaughterhouse 9000 either, wish they had tried something more interesting than cloning the bad guys so the enemies are more expendable. The S9 are my favorite part of Worm so I was thrilled they got so much coverage in the story, I just wish they had been taken in a different direction. Maybe the clones end up messed up or nonviable, Bonesaw and Jack Slash have a falling out , ending the S9 and doing their own thing. When they mentioned Bonesaw could build a perfect cape with other capes powers I was hoping they'd do something with that. I think a cooler idea than the S9k would be Bonesaw and Jack Slash head-hunting specific capes and adding their powers to themselves or someone else. Then Taylor could try to track them down. Maybe this would cut out the ward arc but that felt pretty in-and-out anyway. I don't know, I finished Worm a year ago so it's a little foggy and it's really late at night but I think Bonesaw building a super powerful cape would be really interesting. (Or giving angry non-capes powers? Plague that takes away powers?)
Hmm the biggest problem with cutting S9K would be that it also means you cut out Ashley from Ward. I doesn’t render the story completely unworkable, but it would be a major loss….
@@TalonOfoalain I have not read ward yet 😬
[from the first 30 minutes] the PRT purposely spreads disinformation about trigger events to maintain an image that capes are "safe", and also is run by capes who drank a cup-o-powers who actively tried to hide the fact that this was a thing - if it were widely known how trigger events work it would immediately out so many of the PRT who made up trigger events that don't even come close to aligning with how powers really work.
the scene with taylor reading rachel’s letter and how the letter was written reminded me of the meme “ride wife. life good. wife fight back KILL wife. wife gone. think about wife.”
1:00:37 For no particular reason (other than it being WBs best work) I would like to nominate Twig as the subject of your next podcast
LET THEM COOK!
I remember reading that Bambina’s aging was slowed, not stopped completely, so she may yet grow up
Oh let’s go 🎉
30:22 Taylor is the leading cause of death among the PRT directors in Brockton Bay. Singlehandedly making the occupation orders of magnitude more dangerous.
2:21:05 I would definitely listen to it.
1:01:54 garde? When the queen is attacked.
6:28 I’d add the cafeteria scene as well
Just started listening, I think it is an important callback for how Tagg died to recall that Dinah gave him like 22% odds to die screaming. This indicates one of two things, either (1) he wasn't choked, or (2) Dinah quietly realized he had a 22% chance to die screaming and 78% to die choking and just held that last bit to herself. **edit1** I'm an hour in and my google search is also not finding any chess references whatsoever, nothing. I'll be back to listen to the end after I complete this research. *edit2* regarding her rename, I always propose Flitter as her best possible new hero name. *Edit3* final edit (wanted to update as I listened) - I love how well done the Alexandria defeat is written, Alexandria fully believes she is reading Taylor, and Taylor is just getting colder and less emotional as she continues; so she thinks she has to really ratchet up the pressure to get a reaction - not understanding that she has already pushed her beyond her bounds and is about to snap. Skitter is ice cold, Taylors emotion is entirely expressed through her swarm, she didn't pick up on that fact and because she thought her reading was perfect she completely relied on it for her "path".
You can show the progression of time with a change of seasons. If it was summer when the story started, but now it’s clearly fall, time passed.
I mean, Bakuda made other people time travel as well, in a way.
