Come along as I enter the Dune universe! Dune: Part One leaves a lot to be desired. I’m actually offended by the length of the movie versus the return on investment. I personally loved the review. I have seen it and clicked in to hear your thoughts and to reflect on the plot more. I agreed with most of your points and found that you brought a lot of thoughts to mind that I hadn't considered. The analysis of what you felt was missing was very thoughtful and I agree, would have made the movie stronger/would have added complexity. I love the reflection on the people in the story deciding what various things mean and claiming that it's God's will and how that reflects real life. The way I thought they reconciled the "miracle" that wasn't really a miracle was just religious delusion?? Being so swept up in what they were trying to do and because it was contrived. Just based on what the one guy said about, "If God didn't want this, why wouldn't he stop us?" But I agree that it would have been more interesting or at least clearer to hear more about what they were trying to fulfill and hear more of the history of these attempts.

    • @altasoyster
      @altasoyster Месяц назад

      I see what you’re saying about the delusion, and I agree. It’s also a bit sinister, too, because the question of “Well, why wouldn’t God stop us?” lends itself to a reality where they don’t hold all the power in this situation. God does. But based on what these women are going through, these flesh and bone authority figures do hold all of the power. It’s like the question is more for their victims (to pile on that what’s happening to them is fate) than for themselves as the architects.

    Girl Rick is white people crazy (u fear approaching it b/c they put it aside & hurt u). Michonne is crazy (resourceful) in response 2 her crazy circumstances. When Lori died, Rick goes into ‘Morgan Mode’ (must clear!), in a locked up part of prison instead of looking out for basis needs (what will Judith eat/is Carl ok/ensuring there r no dead in open part of prison…); when he puts it aside, rescues Glenn/Maggie/freezes during conflict & lets Oscar die without resistance. Despite the fact that Michonne directly led them to Woodbury & is battered/wounded disarm her (temporarily until she convinces him) & locks her up when they return 2 prison. When they return 2 prison; Rick removes Tyrese’s group making enemies out of them (as least half of them) & they join Woodbury; with partial knowledge how they can penetrate the prison from the combs. That’s crazy. That’s crazy stupid. After Michonne ‘creates’ her walkers, she realizes that they mask other walkers from attacking her. She gets them to carry stuff. She turns her trauma into an advantage. She was sane enough 2 save Andrea from heard remnants. During TOWL, both Michonne & Rick experience a severe lack of community. Michonne reacts in a way that creates one (sharing her protective strength) by rescuing Bailey & Aiden (right Andrea?) leads Michonne 2 people who enable her survival long enough to find Rick. Rick? TOWL opens with his casual suicide attempt, he ASKED for it when he threw down with Okafor. Framing him lopping off his hand is a lie at best, that was a suicide attempt. (the two amputations that he had witnessed before; Tyrese and Herschel, He saw him go unconscious. He had no resources, he didn’t have a map. It was in the dark! ) Naw, not an escape attempt that’s suicide 2 escape. He makes no attempt 2 build community/familial ties. By their force circumstances, him and Pearl are the closest ghost of familiar/family. Pearl, who gets her promotion calls Rick family, and then demands a salute. A decent example of how family can destroy u b/c they have the greatest access. Michonne knows without a give/take altitude; you will be destructive (despite pure intentions )Rick, He’s really slow to pick up this lesson.

    His wife was a soldier...they both were. They were tired of killing/bombing these cities for the government. So they made a choice. His wife choice for Okafor to save the people of Philly and bomb the soldier instead...which is where she was stationed. As an aside, I am positive Okafor is not at peace regarding that decision. In his room, there are tons of hanging dog tags. And it looks like he meets up with Rick and Thorne in the wreckage of his bombing. I believe he goes back to that stadium all the time and looks for his wife's body i.e. collecting the dog tags of the walker soldiers.

      We as the audience had the "opportunity" to see Rick have that level of crazy where he was talking on the phone. Michonne admits she was out there by herself talking to her dead ex-boyfriend. Mind you, she sure did have his dismembered body walking beside her the whole time. Michonne is a different level of crazy. I think we all don't realize how insane it is because she is rarely out there hallucinating...her level of crazy always seems calculated. But every time we think about the level of brutality Rick hits, Michonne is right there with him. And with Danai's revelation that that level of brutality may have been what made Michonne fall in love with Rick subconciously...it only gets worst. Chopping up termites...Michonne was with it. Adoringly watching Rick bite out a guys throat and disembowel another. the way she ran her sword through that man in the cabin in Season 3. Its always been kill mode for her. I just thought of it. When Rick goes crazy, he implodes in on himself and sort of gets weak. Think about Negan. Whereas, Michonne, when the trauma happens, is like "fuck all that noise...we still fighting." She said the Saviors outnumbered them like 10 to one...the Alexandrians weren't even close. But she was like, that don't change anything. We still fighting. that is a certain amount of crazy. Rick was like "I just wanna go home" in TOWL. And Michonne was like, "we got to blow this whole place up." lol

    • @altasoyster
      @altasoyster Месяц назад

      @@fizzychizzy And the way she ran Jessie's son through when he aimed that gun at Rick. I've been thinking about Michonne's unwillingness to back down after I recently watched the scene where Rick asked her to turn the guns over to Negan. I think I mentioned it in one of my episode reviews for TOWL (probably episode 4 or 5), but I really believe that Michonne's primary drive in the face of immense loss or being conquered (like by Negan) is preserving what she has (left). She was never supposed to come back from the loss of Andre and Mike's betrayal. She was supposed to stay a monster walking among monsters, talking to the corpse who turned her into a monster, into the walking dead. But then Andrea, and the prison, and that community, and Carl, Rick, Judith. That is a drive to preserve her humanity by holding on to the people who brought her back to herself (whether in big or small ways). The people who made her want to live instead of drift among hordes. That drive makes it so that no enemy is too big. Negan or the CRM could neva eva have enough people to make her accept losing her community, her people, her way of life, her humanity and reverting back to being the walking dead. TOWL showed us the only thing powerful enough to get her to accept defeat in preserving the life she never thought she'd have again is the love of her life resisting her long enough. Such an incredible character. I'm sooo happy we got TOWL where she didn't need to share screentime with a whole bunch of other characters.

    1) The atreides Family was getting too powerful because the other great houses began to look to them for leadership and advice. They had ruled over caladan (their home planet) in such a profitable way that the other houses began to flock to them for wisdom basically. (Paul's dad literally says this in the first movie) The emperor doesn't like this. as this basically threatens his STAND as the emperor and could one day potentially lead to the duke taking his place. in the words of the baron who he eventually uses as a cover to destroy the atreides "the atreides voice is rising and the emperor is a jealous man" 2) They literally tell you that the great Houses who we have established were basically looking up to the atreides if they learn about what the emperor has done to the atreides would rebel against the empire and there will be WARFARE and CHAOS. that is the consequence of the emperor's betrayal and why he didn't want people knowing what he did. Hence why he uses the desert as a cover up. if they die there nobody would question it right? after all the desert isn't for the weak. in Fact, the baron in part two eventually tries to use the fact that the emperor did this and wouldn't want it to get out as a way to put feyd on the throne. it's ALL answered in PART 1

      "They literally tell you" I don't know if you've ever heard this, but when screenwriters (especially) rely on telling over showing, it's an information dump and not an effective way to write a movie. All their telling in Part One was not effective. That's why I summarized Part One as setup. Setup that did nothing to get me invested in their lead or the world.

For a book that has a lot of explaining done, denis managed to convey that information in two different lines in a movie that's over 2hrs. that's not an info dump in my opinion. agree to disagree. everything else such as the literal attack and much else is SHOWN to you. I didn't disagree with you on the fact that part one was a set up, that's why its called part one, it set up the world, its characters and the early parts of the story, and it doesn't matter to me if you were interested or you liked it. tastes and opinions differ. It could have been done better. That's probably a blasphemous statement to you considering you seemingly got everything you needed out of Part One (this must be why you're coming with so much heat. I saw it in your first comment even before you deployed the capslock). It's not lost on me that the overarching point of my review of Part One is that I didn't connect with it, because I don't think they did a good enough job, and you chose to jump into the fray by explaining something you think I got wrong as if...what? @@altasoyster I apologize if my comment is giving the wrong idea as to where I'm coming from. the CAPSLOCK is selling my emphasis on a point I'm trying to make. same with my first comment. Your connection to the story or lack thereof in this case and your disapproval with how the story was told really doesn't matter to me. I never said you should like the story, or how its told. Like I said opinions differ. You said something wasn't there, I simply responded that it was and showed you were. (that's literally my entire first comment.There is no statement there alluding to me shitting on your opinion at all) it may or may not change your opinion or feelings on the story but that's not my business. it was a simple correction on your statement. and the second was my own opinion on your take on what an exposition dump is. that's why I used the words 'in my opinion'

    Paul is using the fremen as cannon fodder to get revenge for his family and place himself on the Imperial Throne via religious manipulation. He is basically too much of a coward and too self-important to make the right choice for the Fremen. I don't think its fair to call it a coloniser fantasy though, what is done to the Fremen isn't portrayed as a good thing but instead a tragedy, especially as the series continues, and yes, part 3 is in the works. It's a tale about how the struggle for national liberation can be subverted and overtaken by said colonisers and religious extremism. Frank Herbert, the author, said his main point he wanted people to take away from the novel was this: “I wrote the Dune series because I had this idea that charismatic leaders ought to come with a warning label on their forehead: "May be dangerous to your health." One of the most dangerous presidents we had in this century was John Kennedy because people said "Yes Sir Mr. Charismatic Leader what do we do next?" and we wound up in Vietnam."

      Do you think Paul in Part Two is aware he’s using them as canon fodder? I’m genuinely asking. Because part of what I was getting at when I said he’s not engaging is there was no complexity in Timothée’s eyes in the scenes prior to the poison ingestion. Paul was content to just follow the Fremen around, deny what his mom wants for him, and maybe eventually get revenge for his dad. He didn’t wrestle with possibly using the Fremen, which is why Post Poison Paul feels like a light switch to me and comes off more like he’s possessed. I still place it in the colonizer fantasy category, because not only is Paul using the Fremen as cannon fodder but so is the author/writer. My definition of colonizer fantasy is one where the outsider/Great White Hope shows up to lead/free/save the native population, and the native population is shown as being completely hopelessly were it not for this outsider (like the first Avatar). A colonizer’s greatest fantasy is that the colonized will forgive their transgression (by seeing them as “different”), value the colonizer’s knowledge/way above their own, and ultimately not rise up/fight back. The Fremen were fighting back, and then here came Paul. Because what use is a warning about charismatic leaders to the oppressed? Especially within the story? And Paul has more than charisma on his side. He has religion with real supernatural powers plus military weapons, and a whole government on his side. That doesn’t mean I think the lesson of the book and story is useless. I’m sure it has and will benefit people and make them realize things they hadn’t about charismatic leaders. I’m saying the story ultimately values the Fremen as much as Paul does, which is not at all. We could’ve had both. Maybe I’m jumping the gun and Chani will gather a bunch of Fremen we haven’t seen yet to at the very least force the Fremen following Paul to separate from him. But so far she’s the only dissenting voice, and they haven’t started showing this as disastrous for the Fremen yet, only portraying them as silly for believing in the Messiah. Thanks for the quote from the author. Now I have even more thoughts, lol. Thanks for telling me there’ll be a Part 3. I just looked it up and confirmed. I’m curious about how I’ll view the whole story once we have all the parts.

      @@altasoysterthank you so much for the well thought-out and long response. Will try my best to answer Paul is absolutely aware of what he is doing the moment he drinks the water of life and becomes prescient. He doesn’t just see the future, he sees all possible futures and still choses one that will lead the Fremen to ruin for his own gain. He basically loses himself in that moment, ceasing to be just the 15/16 year old he was, and becomes something more than human, and certainly not a good thing. His humanity is basically lost when he does this. Humans aren’t designed to be able to essentially have the minds of a God. He is the villain of the story because he is presented with these choices and possibilities but still proceeds down a path of revenge as that is what will best suit him and his own ends. I’d argue Dune is a critique of the White Saviour trope, and I believe it was intended to be one. Paul is anything but the saviour of the Fremen. The religious fundamentalists think he is, but again, this religion is not native to the Fremen, itself is a colonialist project by the Bene Gesserit. It’s meant to show why people don’t need “saviours” like Paul to save them because ultimately people like that will always be self interested and can’t fully understand what it is like to be Fremen, in this case. If Dune were a coloniser fantasy surely it would have Paul as the noble hero outsider who learns the way of the Fremen to lead them to victory, and that would be where it ends. But it doesn’t and that isn’t even the story. I think its important to keep in mind that the religion is meant to be and is very clearly described in the text as being artificial. Paul is basically the result of a failed eugenics program by the Bene Gesserit to assert their absolute control over the Empire. He is not even meant to be the chosen one, his mother was told to bear only daughters. The book does explain this better but Paul was meant to be a girl, marry Feyd-Rautha and their child was meant to be who the Bene Gesserit sought to install on the Throne and control. So he’s not even the actual chosen one. He’s basically a mistake. I think the warning about charismatic leaders is just a general one, not for solely oppressed peoples. I think there is an argument to made though that desperate people often turn to less than ideal figures to lead them, especially religious ones. A good example would be the Iranian revolution against the Shah. Also Chani being a voice of reason is, I think, an excellent change from the book to help better convey these themes which seem to go over a lot of peoples heads. The original 1984 movie basically does make Paul a Messiah who can literally call rain to make Arrakis green and thats how it ends lol, which is why so many dislike that movie. In the book Chani is totally devoted and a strong believer. This change gives her more agency also which is a good change. I really don’t want to spoil the rest of the series for you as they (at least Dune Messiah) will be made into movies but I will just say that Paul is definitely not the hero of the story. I see the tale as a tragedy like I said.

      @@sheepsky Thanks for not spoiling it. @@altasoyster It doesn’t matter that you don’t think Paul is charismatic. What matters to the story is that the Fremen find Paul to be charismatic. A charismatic leader doesn’t mean “charming appeal” as it’s often applied to Hollywood celebrities. Paul as a leader has what is called *charismatic authority* by sociologists. According to Max Weber (a sociologist and historian who was one of the early founders of modern-day sociology), charisma in his profession’s definition means _“a certain quality of an individual personality, by virtue of which he is set apart from ordinary men and treated as endowed with supernatural, superhuman, or at least specifically exceptional powers or qualities.”_ Furthermore, these things _“are not accessible to the ordinary person, but are regarded as of divine origin or as exemplary, and on the basis of them the individual concerned is treated as a leader. . .”_ That is the distinction. Paul may not have personal charm in your eyes, but he does have special abilities he learned from his mother as well as genetic advantages he inherited from the Bene Gesserit breeding program. Add his abilities and genetic heritage to the Fremen superstitious belief in a messiah (Lisan al Gaib) and Paul appears godlike to Fremen eyes. It’s not about his personality and whether it’s likable or not. It’s about his rare abilities which make him seem ideal for leadership to susceptible people. And it helps that his mother used her manipulative powers to steer the Fremen to that conclusion.

And did you get the feeling before that scene that Charles’ husband abused her? Cause I did. I got the feeling during the scene outside of the restaurant.
