Can Artists Make A Living In 2024? Carrtoons Drops Knowledge On The Best And Worst Revenue Streams
This is a very interesting interview in several different ways.
I wondered that … how does he do it
Right?? It seems exhausting.
Any advice for musicians who want to play in sessions? How do you find musicians to play?
Yes, here are some good guidelines. 1. Listen and study the 500 greatest albums of all time. 2. Have top gear that works and is properly set up 3. Learn to play simple stuff better then anyone else 4. Be as easy to work with as possible 5. Learn to work quickly and efficiently If you follow these guidelines, you'll be ahead of 90% of musicians.
Good interview, I enjoyed it a lot.
Love OG Smash Mouth. Rip Steve. And you worte lots of amazing songs
100% agree. Watch the full podcast if you want more.
Nice interview. I've always said about Rik, God gave him a gift and he shares it with us. I'm so glad I got to see Triumph live and was here on this Earth during this time. 60's - 2000, best time for music. I can say I lived through it all. Interesting he mentions that Mayer song. I've always loved "Stop This Train" and that particular verse (because it's true). I sing, I've sung live with bands. I carry a pretty good tune. I always say, I don't know how they do it, night in and out. What he is saying about singing certain songs at certain times in a set list is great advice. That's how I became to sing. I give my friends that are performing their Fri Sat night gigs a break. They need a break. So, I take over vocals for a few songs. He's so right. I've had the guys say, "hey you sounded different, really good this time. What did you do different?". I dug deep and let it out. Guys like Rik are successful because they don't fear fear. You can't be afraid of success.
This man is one of the best!
Rik wasn't just a fantastic singer, great guitarist, and insightful songwriter, he is a wonderful human being.
He has incredible instincts and has perfect pitch.
I'm not sure if he has perfect pitch, but he definitely has amazing instincts.
@ He and his brother used to stand back to back with their guitars and guess what note the other one played. He definitely developed this skill and can recall with amazing accuracy.
His brother, Phil, had perfect pitch 😊
Ding!
Thank you so much for a great interview Banner! You’re a fantastic interviewer. It’s refreshing to have someone ask great questions and then let the interviewee speak their mind. Tommy is the absolute master, there’s no one quite like him.

I met Rik and watched him play in Cleveland Ohio. What a humble guy & amazing artist. I have 4 videos on my RUclips page of that show..❤saw Triumph in the 80s . ruclips.net/video/ZDSmVGzJfH4/видео.htmlsi=7Vg8SWezRueY6ljf.

The Olympics is controlled by the Illuminati.
I recently saw a guy on youtube auditioning for Primus. He played the drums well enough so I checked out another of his videos where he was talking shit about Nicko McBrain from Iron Maiden. Basically saying that he sucks and plays the same shit all the time. The music business is a tight circle where we have a lot of respect for our fello musicians. Don't be a dick. I don't care how talented you are, if you're going to be an asshole, no one wants you in the band and you will be black listed before you even have the chance to prove yourself. Work hard, network, and be respectful.
Really solid perspective here. Can't expect a career in music and be bad mouthing everyone.
I survived the 80s ...moving on , I just have one question Ric , why didn't we get to enjoy more of you doing more stuff like Midsommer Daydream on acoustic, that was your signature .
Chet Atkins was right, Here I am far away in India from a small town where people don’t know about fingerstyle and this kind of music and I very inspired by tommy and try to learn and play this style ❤
@@rocknrollsingh7568 that's awesome. Love people who push into their happiness.

PIERRE MORLEN
Yeah, so helpful. I always say the song is a conversation, you should be listening more than talking. Usually someone is trying to play the lick they learned that week or more and its so annoying. Its not about HEY LISTEN TO ME........I'm not a great musician in any sense of the word and at this age find myself doing all solo gigs because like Tommy said, nobody knows how to listen, drives me crazy. As you mature you should say more with less.
@@andysmith6156 100% agree. Listening is key.
Simon Philips is such a huge and so humble musician!
Love this 🙌
Thank you so much, my dude!!
A great interviewer usually does very little talking and is able to prompt the interviewee to do most of the talking - you were able to do this really well. Great interview! Tommy's an awesome musician and a great bloke. Thoroughly enjoyed this. Well done.
Wow!! Thank you so much! I appreciate the kind words. In all honesty, I just try to wind them up, and let them go. It's honestly a lot of fun.
What a wonderful interview. Really, really well done. I’ve been a Tommy fan since way back when he was a humble side man playing around various venues in Australia forty odd years ago. And he was humble, I met him briefly while waiting with a mutual friend for a tram in Melbourne and he was such a friendly chap. Anyhow, I’ve seen many interviews with Tommy and this is the best.
Wow! Thank you so much! That is such high praise. I really appreciate you checking this out.
Super interview, Tommy is a treasure from down under here. He's an inspiration to any musician looking to get better.
@@OlliesSpace 100% agree. I have been practicing more since I did this interview.
Fantastic interview Banner. As usual, the intentionality of your questions plumbed the depths of the interviewee's insight and experiences. This was an absolute treat, especially given the fact that you allowed Tommy to feel so open to share his mindset and perspective on practicing, performing, etc.
@@zacharyalexander9410 thank you so much, Zach! I really appreciate your kind words. This interview was so much fun, and I was so happy to get a chance to talk to him.
This is a really great interview, well done to the interviewer.
@@1992Maton thank you so much! I really appreciate the kind words.
Tommy is such a humble man. I'm 62yrs old and played classical guitar to an ok standard in my early 20's. I gave up because of life. I am now back playing again after a heart attack and enjoying it. I will say I have realised for me you need to practise the right way. I mean concentrating on technique, and it works wonders for me. I practice left and right hand technique arpeggios, scales, trills, etc, and then measure myself against some classical standards, lagrima, and some Bach pieces. Practise the right way and never give up. Great interview of a true gentleman and legend!!
@@gordyhydro5774 love seeing the practice. That's definitely the way to do it.
I saw Triumph live as a teenager and thought they were great. Now that I am older and learn about this guy... I like Triumph music even more. How many genuine good guys are there in rock and roll? I will just say not very many and this guy did not let fame ruin him.
Anything on Tommy is truly facinating. Thank you!
100% agree. Tommy is the dude.
Enjoyed the interview, thanks
Thank you so much!
I learned to play ebass without looking at it. Or even thinking about it. It made a big difference.
Good interview, thanks for posting, Tommy is a fantastic guitar player
Thank you so much! Tommy is the dude.
Such an awesome interview! Thanks for having Greg on and hearing about the process he went through over the years.
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it.
So refreshing to see the man who was responsible for the most iconic songs of my youth is such a kind, down to earth dude. God bless ya Rik and thank you for all the great songs and concerts!

Lots of musicians hate their hit songs. Mediocre sells sometimes.
@@jremington123 true, but it's all perspective. Someone's mediocre song might be someone else's great track.
Rik thank you for your music and influence on my playing...💚🎸
cuz dude, listen to your voice. You have a high pitched voice naturally and when you're like 5' 4" or something you're just going to be able to hit higher notes. Brad Delp. Steve Perry. They could hit the E5 w/o too much of a problem. Lou Gramm. If you train to sing higher for years, you can increase your range a little bit too and you can also fudge it higher by using various techniques. But when Rik sings really high, it sounds like some head voice clogged sinuses timbre. When Steve Perry or Brad Delp sang high notes, it sounded amazing. That's why no one is ever talking about how great Rik was as a singer. He was good. Geddy Lee was just as good and basically singer higher in his younger days. Rik was just all around good. Good singer, good songwriter, good elec guitarist.
Wonderful interview. Love how you gently steered the conversation with the right questions and just let the 🐐 tell his stories. Thank you!
He's the absolute best. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Make sure you subscribe. We've got some great guests in 2025.
Fascinating story. Thanks for sharing it. Tommy is a national treasure and a great embassador for the guitar.
