    • @rhynestoneproductions

Yes, here are some good guidelines. 1. Listen and study the 500 greatest albums of all time. 2. Have top gear that works and is properly set up 3. Learn to play simple stuff better then anyone else 4. Be as easy to work with as possible 5. Learn to work quickly and efficiently If you follow these guidelines, you'll be ahead of 90% of musicians.

Nice interview. I've always said about Rik, God gave him a gift and he shares it with us. I'm so glad I got to see Triumph live and was here on this Earth during this time. 60's - 2000, best time for music. I can say I lived through it all. Interesting he mentions that Mayer song. I've always loved "Stop This Train" and that particular verse (because it's true). I sing, I've sung live with bands. I carry a pretty good tune. I always say, I don't know how they do it, night in and out. What he is saying about singing certain songs at certain times in a set list is great advice. That's how I became to sing. I give my friends that are performing their Fri Sat night gigs a break. They need a break. So, I take over vocals for a few songs. He's so right. I've had the guys say, "hey you sounded different, really good this time. What did you do different?". I dug deep and let it out. Guys like Rik are successful because they don't fear fear. You can't be afraid of success.

I recently saw a guy on youtube auditioning for Primus. He played the drums well enough so I checked out another of his videos where he was talking shit about Nicko McBrain from Iron Maiden. Basically saying that he sucks and plays the same shit all the time. The music business is a tight circle where we have a lot of respect for our fello musicians. Don't be a dick. I don't care how talented you are, if you're going to be an asshole, no one wants you in the band and you will be black listed before you even have the chance to prove yourself. Usually someone is trying to play the lick they learned that week or more and its so annoying. Its not about HEY LISTEN TO ME........I'm not a great musician in any sense of the word and at this age find myself doing all solo gigs because like Tommy said, nobody knows how to listen, drives me crazy. I am now back playing again after a heart attack and enjoying it. I will say I have realised for me you need to practise the right way. I mean concentrating on technique, and it works wonders for me. cuz dude, listen to your voice. You have a high pitched voice naturally and when you're like 5' 4" or something you're just going to be able to hit higher notes. Brad Delp. Steve Perry. They could hit the E5 w/o too much of a problem. Lou Gramm. If you train to sing higher for years, you can increase your range a little bit too and you can also fudge it higher by using various techniques. But when Rik sings really high, it sounds like some head voice clogged sinuses timbre. When Steve Perry or Brad Delp sang high notes, it sounded amazing. That's why no one is ever talking about how great Rik was as a singer. He was good. Geddy Lee was just as good and basically singer higher in his younger days. Rik was just all around good. Good singer, good songwriter, good elec guitarist.
