Derwentside Immigration Removal Centre Vigil
On the 24th November 2021, a vigil was held at Derwentside Immigration Removal Centre to honour those who have lost their lives as a result of hostile environment policies. Campaigners heard testimonies from former detainees and read aloud the names of those who have died in detention centres. The UK is the only member of the 47 Member State Council of Europe to use the inhumane practice of indefinite detention.
Local residents have not been consulted and the site is opposed by Durham County Council.

These children are concerned by the amount of batteries they see lying around. If you are a visitor, the best thing you can do is to TAKE YOUR BATTERIES BACK WITH YOU ON THE PLANE. Be responsible. These children produced a short drama about using the sun to disinfect drinking water to stop diarrhoea. The SODIS method is a simple procedure. Contaminated water is filled in a transparent PET-bottle or glass bottle and exposed to the sun for 6 hours. During this time, the UV-radiation of the sun kills diarrhoea generating pathogens. More than 4000 children die every day from the consequences...
