Hi Dan. To make fast trills, between partisks will u use the pivot ? Or just aahh eehh movement back of tounge? Great web site and YT videos. Keep up👍
Was it IKB that had something metallic (coin?) stuck in his throat for years and, then, engineered a device to remove it? He also engineered the first steam-powered euphonium in the late nineteenth century - inspirational.
He got the coin stuck in his lung whilst attempting a magic trick, then he and his father, Mark, invented the inversion table to try and remove it!
Great performance Daniel
Don't hear those D's that often! Congrats on the Nationals. Fantastic performance👍
Neither do I...! Thanks!
@@danielthomas7629 My thoughts too. No-one plays those notes on eupho. Bob Childs has played super A, Garry played super C, but Dan is playing much higher (see this and his shorts video where he does tripe B). Dan has now reached the status of legend with his thundering sound and high notes, and I am not sure David Childs could even do that. I am starting to understand now, Dan's playing is now reaching new limits in euphonium playing. Bob Childs once played the limits, then David, now Dan is taking it even further.
@@TheSproutarian For what it's worth, I was having a lesson with Bob Childs in his kitchen, and I asked him what his highest note is, and he ripped out the loudest super D I've ever heard, made me jump a mile!
@@danielthomas7629 Are the high C#’s better on a Sovereign compared to a Prestige? I’ve Played on a Prestige for years and I get terrified every time I see one. That Harrison’s solo is lovely/horrible all in one😅
@adammcg7115 Nope! C#s are terrible on all modern large bore euphs; I think it's just the nature of the beast. Best C# I've ever played was on a 1970s medium bore Besson New Standard, but there were lots of dreadful things about it, too!
Great stuff Daniel and congrats for your performance at the Nationals, absolute magic 😊
Many thanks!
You stand out as an individual performer. You have great musicianship, you play with confidence and produce a beautiful tone and really good control on the high notes, a great overall performance. You are such a joy to watch and listen to. Well done Dan.
You're too kind!
@@danielthomas7629 I say let the truth be known,...before everyone knew of you, i can still remember you around the trade stands at St.Georges Hall much younger, innocent and inquizitive.
And the band is also great 😊
@@ivandubov2537 I agree, they sure are great, and potentially about to become even more greater.
Dan: what was that last note? Just amazing.
Super D!
@@danielthomas7629 you mean Super Delicious
Wonderful👏🙂
Thanks!
@@danielthomas7629 I live in Brazil and this kind of music is something rare over here. Listening you play it so well is a complete discovery for me. Thank you too.
Holy hell. You're a machine! Incredible
Yep, Dan is a total tank....completely tearing it up.
Thanks very much!
Unreal! That blew me away. Much admiration.
So valuable. You taught me this in a recent lesson but needed a refresher before we meet again. Thank you!
Essential video- thank you!
Thanks brother!
Beautiful💗
Thanks Daniel, I'll give this a go 🎺
Fantastic. Knew it happens but not heard it explained explained/taught that well before.
Do you have any experience with involuntary shaking in face muscles? I have been playing for many years and last few years I have started to get the these involuntary shakes in my jaw and trying your exercise seems to exagurate it (Buzzing without any support) Before it havent been a real problem when playing but it is starting to be and this spring I really struggled because of it.
@MrDavidoneo Hi! I would hesitate to give any advice as it sounds like you need to see a medical professional. I'd get that checked out as soon as you can to make sure there's nothing underlying that's causing it! If there doesn't appear to be a medical cause for the issue, it could be simple muscle fatigue or some other aspect of your playing that you're doing counter to what your embouchure actually needs. Without seeing you play it's very hard to suggest things! Still, make sure you get that checked out with a Doctor; there might be something underneath that's causing it which is easily treatable! All the best,
@@danielthomas7629 Hi! Thank you I will do that. I tried this summer to have a break from playing to see if it might be something i have built up and start up again from scratch. But its still the same as when I was in "good shape" and having played for over 20years now its just nothing I have dealt with before.
Hie there Daniel.. i have a solo coming up of grandfather’s clock i saw a video of you playing it with the black dyke please give me a guide through it.. especially the third movement i would really appreciate it as a fan😭
great video! how do you recommend becoming a player who can just start playing cold? i find i pretty much cant play at all when im cold but after 5-10 minutes of buzzing and glissing my playing is fine
Hi Daniel, I like this piece, where can I purchase a bass cleff copy
This is incredible!
I never warm up cuz I never cool down!
Hello! Do you use just air? Does the tone comes without buzzing ?
@@manuelgatterer7317 Just air! No tongue or buzzing, just a 'HOO' attack.
Fascinating
Hey Daniel! Awesome job with the recent videos! I see you’re using a Besson, have you switched over to a new primary horn from your Geneva? Was thinking of purchasing a Geneva myself.
@@spatlegibari Thanks! Yes, I use a Besson 967-T!
Hello again, Daniel. How do you feel about the use of embouchure trainers and mutes as practice tools?
@willsoneupher4040 I've only ever used a pencil squeezed between my lips as an aid for developing compression, everything else just seems to be an expensive version of that! Stay away from any devices that aim to reduce mouthpiece pressure; too little pressure can be as detrimental to your playing as too much pressure! As for mutes, I personally don't see a benefit; I actually don't use practice mutes at all as I find the resistance messes up my face.
@@danielthomas7629 Hi. Thanks for answering my questions. I have a P.E.T.E. I bought mostly because I wanted to build stronger embouchure muscles. I don’t use it often, but I’ve been thinking that maybe I should? Would you elaborate a bit more on building compression? I have a practice mute because I don’t want to disturb anyone, but I gotten to the point where I hate having to use it. Plus, it sucks when I’m playing through long tones trying to tune. 😂😂😂
@@willsoneupher4040 Potentially something I can talk about in my high range vid! Compression is basically the pinching power of the lips, helps you keep your chops under control as you ascend so the hole in the middle of your lips doesn't collapse or become too open. P.E.T.E seems to be a device which pulls away from the lips, I'm not really sure what that develops, in all honesty? If you're after some easy exercises which build chop strength, check out the 'Three Daily Playing Calisthenics' at the following link www.trombone.org/articles/view.php?id=240#:~:text=The%20Three%20Daily%20Playing%20Calisthenics,and%20the%20Pencil%20Trick%20Routine. I find that the above routine is enough to keep me in shape, even if I don't touch my instrument for a few days. I've even had a week away from the instrument, only doing the above exercises everyday, and it's been enough to keep me reasonably in shape on the instrument.
@@danielthomas7629 GOTCHA!!! I definitely look forward to seeing that video! There’s a video that warburton made explaining how to use it much better than I can. 😅You can actually use both ends of the device. One end for pulling and the other for holding in place, much like the pencil technique you said you’ve used sometimes. Thanks for the tips!!!
Hey Daniel, thanks so much for sharing this advice. Really appreciate the simple and straightforward approach, on all your recent videos, to what can be a complex topic.
@@danbryant5959 Thank you very much! I'm trying to provide content that isn't just "breathe more!"
Hi Dan, hope you're well. Thanks for a great video. I've been playing 40+ years, and have never heard anyone refer to this pivot before. I'm off to experiment now....!! Cheers.
@neiljohnson1971 Glad to hear it's something new, at least! Check out the notes below, just to make sure you get it right! 1. The embouchure pivot or motion refers to moving the lips and mouthpiece together as a unit in an upward or downward direction along the teeth and jaw to change register. 2. The mouthpiece placement on the lips stays the same, but the relationship of the rim/lips to the teeth changes. 3. Avoid excessive movement, let the sound and pitch be the guide. All the best!
Really really interesting video here, I'm a cornet player myself but as I'm sure you will agree most of this is transferable skills across all brass instruments!
100%! All brass instruments work the same way, just at different sizes!
I always had difficulty finding the difference between warm up, and practice. Where do the warm up stop, and the practice begin? 🤔 Also... That is not a 4AL? 🙂
@steffenmrsk4720 it's one of the first SM4s ever made! For me, the warm up stops when my embouchure response is good and my flexibility is working well.
Yes, that make sense - So it has the little mark on it, after the Denis Wick engraving? (Nerd alert) #whatmouthpiecedoyouplay 😅
@steffenmrsk4720 Got some custom pieces on the way from Doug Elliott! Might do a vid on them when they arrive...
@@danielthomas7629 please do! It will be interesting! 🙂
@@danielthomas7629it’d be great to see some info/thoughts on Doug’s euph pieces!
I knew a world class player who always needed a 4 hour warm up. Mental prisons
That needs therapy!
Awesome stuff. I dont suppose, for the next video, having a mic so the talking isn't so quiet?? I struggle to hear it, even on full volume
I'll dig out my lapel mic! Thanks for the comment!
Hi Daniel, are you able to post the melody of the name of life from spirited away. I think you would play it incredibly
Great video, thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Nice warm tone
That a Sovereign?
Yep! 967T.
@@danielthomas7629 The slightly lighter instruments seem to be a big thing now! You prefer it to the Prestige?
@adammcg7115 The Prestiges are great, but I prefer the more compact sound. There is a new Besson euphonium developed by David Childs which has a slightly smaller bell, and I'm eager to give it a go!
No way!!!! thats got to be fake
Lol! Only thing fake here is the painting on the wall!
Proud of you Dan, absolutely phenomenal (still surprised you aren't a tour guide at big pit) 🩷
Haha! Thanks a lot! Nice to hear from you x
We are! Our journeys at home will take us to Colorado (at 9000 feet above sea level!) for both of us to play an all John Williams program with a concert band, followed by a week of a jazz big band for me.
Excellent video, Dan! Margie and I are currently traveling in Italy for 3 weeks with only our mouthpieces and have a heavy schedule when we return to the states. This really helped me progress. All the best to you.
Hi Neil!! Hope you and Margie are well!
I love this!!!! Can you do a video on high range? Or a video on switching clefs, specifically from bass to treble and vice versa?
I'm certainly looking into a high note video! As for clef switching, my best advice is to learn the clef from the ground up rather than transpose at sight. I tried to transpose down a fifth, but it's impossible to do for quicker music. Get a hold of bass clef parts for treble clef pieces you know, or the opposite depending on what your mother clef is! All the best,
@@danielthomas7629 I started on bass clef euphonium. I’m a bit slower when it comes to switching clefs. By the way, I love your sound!!!! I’ve also been attracted to the British style of euphonium playing. There’s just something about it. It’s so lush and gorgeous!😍😍😍 I’ve tried so hard to get that sound, but it just not that same.
awesome video! thank you for sharing. people often overlook the importance of free buzzing. it is so refreshing to hear someone of your caliber talk about this
