Heartful Music: Intuitive Composing
Добавлен 1 окт 2024
6 String Quintet no 3 by Guy Shahar
My Third String Quintet, again featuring an extra double bass for a richer texture reflects my evolving approach to harmony, rhythm, and counterpoint, balancing the familiar with unconventional elements.
CONSOLIDATION:
I’ve become aware of register since feedback I received on track 3, and I’m more comfortable now writing both harmonic and counterpoint parts using principles of separating registers between instruments. In this track, I’ve tried to write more harmonic parts (counterpoint tends to come more naturally to me), and have allowed myself to be more flexible with these principles. There were some close dissonances that this piece was begging for so there were some moments where the...

Overcoming Composer's Block

Composer's Block, like any creative block, can feel debilitating. This video on how to overcome suggests ways we can think about it differently and actually use the apparent limitations it imposes to our advantage. Video Index: 00:00 Introduction - How I frame Composer's Block (and how I don't) 00:40 Lack of Creative Inspiration as a Composer 05:20 Lack of Motivation as a Composer 07:20 Creativ...

4. Adagio for Piano, 2 Violins & Cello by Guy Shahar (August 2024)

This was a quick track I composed while in between String Quartets. It was knocked out in an afternoon, but some people still find it to be their favourite of my early tracks. You can hear my own music on this channel, on Soundcloud and also at heartfulhealing.co.uk/music
Intuitive Composing: An Introduction

This is an introduction to Intuitive Composing, and to the new Heartful Music channel. It tells my story of starting to compose later in life, sets out what we mean by the term "intuitive composer" and outlines some of the things we have planned for the channel. 3. String Quintet no.1: The Amnon Shahar Quintet by Guy Shahar (August 2024)
Просмотров 13Месяц назад
This is my third track from August 2024 - after a couple of attempts at writing for a full orchestra, I decided to focus on smaller ensembles for a while, and a String Quintet seemed perfect. This is also the first piece of mine that I consider to be a coherent whole. It's named after my Dad, and the last minute or so was written on the evening I found out he had cancer. You can hear more of my...
2. Baroque Piece by Guy Shahar (July 2024)
Просмотров 5Месяц назад
My second track - almost certainly my weakest. Some nice tunes, but nothing really holding it together or taking it anywhere. After this, I switched away from trying to write for a whole orchestra, and switched to smaller ensembles like a String Quintet, and later adding in woodwinds (from around my 7th track in September). You can hear more of my music on this channel, on Soundcloud and also a...
1. First Explorations by Guy Shahar (July 24)
Просмотров 10Месяц назад
My very first track, and first attempt at composing, from July 2024. I'd never composed before (apart from some songs for my guitar in my 20s and a few random and inept plonkings on the piano), so this was something very new. Not a masterpiece, but a nice start to a new journey. You can hear more of my music on this channel, on Soundcloud and also at heartfulhealing.co.uk/music
Thanks so much for inviting me, Guy! It was a pleasure!
there are some interesting ideas there, Guy and I suspect we might have a few things to discuss. Was trying to find you on Facebook (where you said you'd already presented your ideas) without success as there are countless people who share your name -- mostly in Israel. Which one are you?
Yes, there are a surprising number of Guy Shahar's.... This one's me facebook.com/guy500 (I'm in the UK). My LinkedIn is www.linkedin.com/in/guyshahar/ I don't use social media much, but these are a good way to connect in the first instance.
(the sharing of my pieces was in Facebook groups)
@@HeartfulMusic1 OK, thanks! The fb page seems mainly about your admirable professional autism work, though. I'm not sure if there is any further feedback on your Intuitive Composing project which I might be able to hook in to? I myself started composing purely by chance -- I suddenly remembered at age 35 that I had told a university friend I would write a symphony by the age of 35 and realised I'd better get a move on. At this time, the earliest sequencing and notation software was on the go but library playback was still pretty basic -- as was the symphony. But it was fun and soon became a hobby. In general, before starting a new work I have some sort of concept of what it should be about and in some cases what areas I want develop in technically but after I get going, the music tend to more or less write itself. This is particularly the case with vocal/choral works as the text determines everything. My recent The Little Mermaid which I regard as my most characteristic and possibly best work is a typical example. It would be interesting to know how you get your initial ideas. Do you play something out on the keyboard or is everything in your head? My biggest problem is getting started -- once that happens then the work usually takes off on its own. Because of this, the opening is quite often the weakest part of a work, unfortunately.
@@davidowen9308 There's a page where you can hear more of my tracks (although there's not many of them as I just started in July...) - heartfulhealing.co.uk/music. I think my next video is going to be about Composers' Block. I find the same as you - that once I get going, it takes care of itself. Ideas are not necessary as they come once I get started - I can see how they might be helpful as a way of getting you to the keyboard. Generally, though, whenever I start with an idea, it gets twisted into something totally different from what I imagined almost straight away. Yes, when I get there, I generally hammer out something almost random, and eventually something will come up that sounds nice that I use as a starting point - similar to you. If you find that the start of your pieces are the weakest, then you can just skip the beginning and use something from a few seconds in as the starting point? I'd love to hear your symphony, if you completed it (especially if you did it by 35!!). I think this is you?? - play.reelcrafter.com/dko22/chamberworks - there's a lot of interesting soundning stuff here, and I look forward to listening to it!!
@@HeartfulMusic1 yes, all my stuff of any sort of significance in on Reelcrafter under one of the four sections (links to all at the bottom of each). My first symphony isn't there as the first movement is little more than a free improvisation and the other movements are quite weak as well (though the scherzo is not bad for a first attempt). Still, I wrote the second almost straight afterwards and you can hear that on Reelcrafter! Unfortunately it's not the actual opening that the problem but the first theme is general (though there are exceptions (so there'd be a lot of rewriting to do). I'm probably too impatient to get started but when I get into a piece, the ideas tend to flow quite spontaneously from what went before. Anyway, Composers' Block sounds like a good theme.
great project!
Thank you!!
