Out on a local body of water again hoping for a repeat of last years big fish! My wife hooked a 30.5" walleye in this same spot so you never know! I hooked into a big fish right away... lost it and then marked it again... IT WAS BIG... Caught lots of small fish on different stuff... the key is changing it up or being ready to change constantly. One minute they were all over the Berkley Finisher...
These just catch fish!

I started out trolling while searching for fish and ended up having all my success that way. This really was an outing where the fish dictated the tactic. I'm always wanting to cast plastics for them, but today they just wanted the crankbaits! Just put my 2600 together, I like it! What do I do when MT has no ice? Last 7 years Ive been goin to my cabin near devils lake where the ice is always thick and the walleye fishin is unbelievable.
Ha ha! Yeah it’s been rough here for sure! Devil’s Lake and the surrounding area is on my bucket list for sure! The size of perch out there right now is unbelievable and yes great walleye fishing! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Whats the pack tote from costco?
www.costco.com/coho-pack-and-carry-box.product.4000101667.html
Hold the button down to dim or brighten.
I have the eskape 2600 and wasn’t thinking I could pull it around by hand. just got the new eskape 2000 and I like it a lot but it’s on the smaller side. It’s perfect for a bigger 1 man setup
You totally can with a smitty sled and they’re cheap and easy to make! The 2000 is great for short outings for sure! It’s always nice to have multiple options. Thanks for watching and commenting! So appreciate it!
@ I do have a smitty sled set up for a hub tent also.. never thought about making one for the 2600. It does have hyfax runners on it but I think the smittty would be a better option. Thanks for the advice 😎🎣🎣
@mattjones-dh7cv Awesome! You bet!
The dimmer switch on the Eskimo hub lights are built in. You simply hold the button down, and it dims. Hold it down again, and it brightens back up..... Did I hear Fort Peck......? HELLO bucket list.......
@ I should really read instructions!!! 😂. Thanks my friend! Yes 4 days on Peck! Super excited.
Beautiful eyes and water.
Thanks for watching!
I have to laugh back in the 70s or 80s i started using a flasher on ice. Looking back at the flack I caught for hauling to much junk out on the ice to fish . When I watch people today and everything they need to ice fish I just have to smile. Hands down the best I ever walked out on the ice with made his own lures had one rod one bucket and a pack of homemade jigs and spoons. That old man was a bloodhound on ice and he could 0 in on fish like magic.
Ha ha! For sure! I grew up ice fishing in Maine for salmon and we carried everything we needed out in a pack basket. Times sure have changed!
Hey neighbor 👋 I'm a local enough to know right where your at. I've been packing my camera gear while I'm out as well. Maybe we can collaborate sometime if we get some fresh ice.
Nice man! Absolutely! I’m a newbie for sure but would love to collaborate. Just need some sub zero temps!
There’s a tournament on the Fish Donkey App called the Montana Grand Slam you should check out. You can find it on the 406 ice fishing group on FB. Starts Jan. 1
I chipped my way out there 2 weekends ago. That ice is pretty much gone now 😢. We definitely found a few walleyes out there though. Also, the brown trout were out in numbers.
Awesome! It’s definitely a late start to ice season. I’m ready for it to get cold so we can get on our other bodies of water!

Hey, are you on instagram at all? Would love to connect with and chat fishing
I'm not on IG but would be happy to connect another way. I'm always down for chatting fishing! Are you located in MT?
@ I am not, located in Alberta about an hour from sweetgrass MT
@@Hardyboys_fishing Gotcha... did a family trip through Banff a few years back. Pretty incredible. Spent some time in Edmonton and Calgary, and then 2018 did a fishing trip to Dore Lake in SK. Unbelievable fishing opportunities you guys have in AB and SK.
Great video, how thick was the ice?
@@shawnandcoraself7321 thanks! 4ish. Definitely varied and had to be careful of cracks and some open water spots.
Why aren't you using any tip ups? I definitely agree. Before the sun comes up and right when the sun goes down are the peak windows for walleyes.
If I had been able to stay longer that day I would have set some out on the last spot I started to mark more fish. It ended up being more of a run n gun outing searching for fish. I usually have a jaw jacket out and a few finicky foolers deployed.
Hey Mark nice video. Good to see a guy like me - passionate about ice fishing, and breaking it down as and for the regular guy. So many videos of people who only show top dollar items and I don't know about you, but I can onlt watch so much of those before I feel deflated. I have exact otter sled, and I really like your aluminum rack mount. Do you have any specific info on how that is assembled? Again, thanks for the video.
Thanks man! Appreciate you watching and commenting! You don't have to have all the fancy gear to be successful on the ice for sure. I've slowly through the years upgraded my equipment but started with very little. It definitely does make a difference, and cuts down the amount of time drilling holes. I have a video coming out here soon with some tips on where to start and what to look for even if you don't have electronics. I can get some measurements for you on the aluminum rack and maybe i'll post a video on it, but it's pretty basic. Helps a ton keep stuff organized and secure.
What sled?
Otter. Thanks for watching and commenting!
The blue genz box makes a great shuttle for the 7 works perfectly👍
I looked at that as an option. I actually ended up getting Clams new shuttle. I’ll do a video review of it soon. Thanks for watching and commenting! So appreciate it! Tight lines!
Lake Monster is saying that Little Fort Peck (Nelson) has 3 inches on it. Temps are looking like things will start shifting into build mode starting tomorrow. It would be a great trip to break in that LiveScope! Just sayin'.....
Yeah man! It’s on my radar. Been on the ice once already working a little with it and feeling like we’re getting it dialed in. We’ve got a local shallow lake with 4-5 inches on it so I’ll be out there tomorrow! Tight lines!
Just foumd your channel. I have to admit that I was surprised to see an angler from Montana who's interested in walleye. Here in Wisconsin, everyone loves fishing for walleye. I've been all over Montana and will probably retire there. Since I'm a bit older than you, here are a few takeaways from watching your video. Livescope is huge, it will show you how the fish react to a bait/presentation offered to them. Simce I didn't see a UTV or snowmobile, I'm assuming you pull your gear out. The smitty sled is a good idea, but I see a few concerns. For starters, it's not tall enough. The purpose of a smitty is to get your sled off the ground and, if possible, above the snow (less resistance). You should also not have so much flex in your support arms. Keep the structure rigid. Also, put eyebolts in the front of each ski and attach your rope to the ski's. This will alleviate attaching a ripe to your sled and pulling it off. Also, set your sled on top of the smitty and take little pieces of wood and screw it down on the outside of the sled (like a lip on the outer edges to lock it in). After that, extend the supports on one side and build some supports for your auger. If you need a visual, I can send you a picture. I ran this way for years. However, this year, I have a Ski-doo Expedition (smarter not harder I say) for pulling my 1000 pounds of gear out on the ice. Have you ever fished Ft Peck? Mark
Mark thanks so much for the reply and for watching the video! We have a fantastic walleye fishery throughout the whole Missouri River system here in MT. Caught my first walleye by the way in Wisconsin as a kid. Love that state! Appreciate the input on the smitty sled! It's not quite finished yet, still have the eyebolts to put on as you said, and was debating how rigid i needed to make it. We surprisingly don't get as much snow as you guys do so this will only be used a handful of times during the season, so the height is really not as important. Wind blows most of the snow off the big lake anyhow. I'll be using it primarily for my flip over. I plan on using bungee cords to attach it to the smitty sled to pull out and then take it off. Work in progress for sure, but would love to see what you built and how I can adapt it. Ft. Peck is on my list. Hopefully this winter or spring I will plan a trip over there. It's a good 6hrs from where I live.
Let me know how I can get you a picture (email, Instagram, Pony Express, Falcon, etc.) and I'll send it over.
@@3-EnglishLabs Ha ha! Carrier pigeon is still a method here in MT! 😊 My email address is montanawalleyeangler@gmail.com
Good video. I’m in the process of getting more serious about ice fishing this year so I’m watching videos to get ideas. What part of the state are you in? I also have really gotten into the Small mouth bass and Sauger this year on the river. We caught a pile of both this year. I subscribed to your channel and look forward to seeing more videos.
Thanks for watching! Helena area. We don’t have many smallmouth around us but there are a few in CF. Thanks for subscribing!
New subscriber just found your channel could you do a video sometime this season on how to find a walleye close to our area. I haven't had much luck in the past years. I'll keep my eye out for you this year. Ps you will love the skis I have mine just attached to the sled and it made a huge difference, but it will run you over if your going downhill!!
Thanks for watching and subscribing! I’m definitely no expert, but I will absolutely do some videos on location breakdown and where and when to find walleye.
@ if you are looking for new content in the spring I could take you out on the Yellowstone east of Billings and get you into some amazing Small Mouth Bass action. I put somewhere in the vicinity of 1600 Bass and north of 400 sauger this past year in of my jet boat. Released most.
@ will absolutely be posting more content related to finding and catching walleye on our local waters. Where in MT are you located?
Scheels has a universal shuttle kit, bag and base . I use one on my Helix 7 after i pull it out of the boat mount for the winter. I have a vex but the gps on the Helix comes in so handy
Cool. I’ll have to check it out! Thanks!
How do you like that 2B rod case? Has my interest.
I like it a lot! I’ve been using it for 2 seasons now and I have zero complaints. It has two large front pockets where I can keep 4 tackle boxes with everything I need. Holds 4 rods and longer ones at that. Definitely worth the purchase! Thanks for watching and commenting! Good luck this ice season!
Watched on repeat….the itch is real
Sooo true man! Thanks for watching!
👌
I want to see more Benny cameos
Benny is the star!
Love it 🙌🏼
Awesome!! Canyon ferry? Are you just trolling a straight crakbait or are you using lead core or sinkers or something
I clip in a 2 or 3 oz snap weight at about 50 ft and then let out a little more line. It just depends on depth. The reef runner 200s dive about 8-10’. The 400s have a deeper dive curve. Lead core is definitely an easy option as well. Yes CF
Thanks for watching and commenting! Really appreciate it!
seems like it would be super informative, but the music makes it hard for me to even hear you
Noted. Thanks for the feedback!
From 2:30 on there is no music and the majority of the important information is easy to hear. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Nicely done. Love seeing the big ones go back.
@@spiltmilt Thanks man! Big ones always go back! The Mo has been producing some really big walleye the past few years.
I’ll be referring back to this video once I get a boat
