(Slightly) Bookish Week in My Life | Birthday celebrations, cats, The Raven Cycle, & more!
A reading vlog that is a bit less reading and a bit more life vlog this week! Boy was it crazy, crazy busy when I filmed this, goodness *gracious*. I was holding on by a thread, hahaha
Luckily it is over now and it was a very fun week, despite being quite chaotic and stressful 💜 My husband passed his masters defense and overall thesis with the best possible score and his birthday was also a great success! We went to an escape room (SOOOO much fun) and then to our favorite Korean BBQ place for dinner and then back home for more ice cream cake for dessert, haha 🎂
The only reading I really did this week was reading The Raven Cycle! I finished book one and almost finished book two. I like book ...

TBR Jar Picks for December! | Five star predictions, pirates, re-read, and more 🎄

Picking my December 2024 reads from my TBR prompt jar - last one of 2024!! Crazy how time flies 🥲 This month I picked prompts for a book that I think will be five stars, a re-read, a book with pirates, a book from the 2000's, a book with a question in the title, and a book by an author who shares my name (first, last, or middle!) - I also just HAD to throw in an extra 'winter wonderland' book, ...

Reading Vlog - Oct / Nov 2024 | I'm sick (literally, but also with disappointing reads ☹️)

A little bit of a disappointing week, as I was not only quite sick, but also had 2 disappointing reads. Lessons in Chemistry was a proper disappointment and I really, really disliked it, but at least the other, Of Promises and Thorns, was just a little letdown. I still liked OPAT, at least, I just don't think it was up to par with Kenley Davidson's normal writing... And I did have one great boo...

    I have finished a few books lately, as you may have seen on Goodreads, but! I've officially caught the bug of starting too many books and jumping between them, because I've been on a binge of your videos the last week/s(?), lol! I can't help it! My personal struggles affect my reading so much, and you pointed me towards so many books that sound so good, as well as many with MC's that sound very similar to me/whose situations sound similar to mine that it makes me curious what I could get out of those books. I haven't even finished ToG series. I skimmed (read only some POV's) of "Empire of Storms", didn't read "Tower of Dawn" nor the last one then. The ending of fifth one scared me. But I own the entire series, plus the novella (?) "The Assasin's Blade", which I have read. The thing is, it was so long ago now that I would have to re-read the entire series. *cue stress* Lol! I also don't think I've finished Harry Potter. I read it in elementary school, when I was around 14. Got it in school's library, but! I'm not sure I read the last one, and I have doubts about the "Half-Blood Prince". Not sure if I'm interested in it now, or maybe just the sheer volume of all the books scares me, haha! I'm unsure if I want to continue with "The Raven Boys" series. I know you're reading book 2 now, so I'm curious to hear what you think of it. It's deffo not my priority right now though. I wish I could get my hands on "Legendary" and "Finale" though, as I recently finished "Caraval" reread. It's so good! I think the book read me, not the other way around, haha! I had forgotten most of it (I'm like MFC in "Bewitched" with the memories, except mines because of trauma, not magic use) so it was just as magical and wondrous for me as the first time around. I really got lost and had to remind myself it was a game. And the ghost of the end scene came to me then to help me not fall into despair towards the end. I did pick up "Cinder" reread that I'd started a few months ago. I'm nearing the end, will probably finish tomorrow, buuuut... I'm not liking it as much as I did the first time around. I'm not entirely sure why. Feels like too many genres mixed together, as well as a mix of past and future, sci-fi and fantasy + a retelling of a classic (and I do love classics), plus both MC's are just so... powerless? I don't know. It's a weird mix that keeps me from fully immersing myself in the book and enjoying it. And I have the second book that I'm pretty sure I never picked up, and you said you loved that one, so maybe I can hope for that, as I'm not sure how I feel about a cyborg cinderella. Taking a break from it for the evening to read "The Faceless Mage". I'm only two chapaters in, but it's sooo fun already! Ohmygosh! "Popinjay" is officially my favorite word that I've ever discovered in a book, lol! I'm not native English speaker so I do come across quite many that are unfamiliar to me. I'm mildly curious about "The Cruel Prince" books 2 and 3, though I didn't enjoy book one that much. I just had a lot of problems with it. And I've reread it recently. Like I said, my own personal struggles really come into play a lot as to what I enjoy, so that definitely makes me biased, and not always in good ways. It's like you said about the ending of "Just For The Summer" - it takes a long time to recover from serious trauma. I've been dealing with things openly for three years, a little more, and I'm nowhere near any sort of reprieve. How wonderful would it have been for 6 months of healing with God to have been enough for things to not be a problem anymore. *sigh*

    I have such a problem with DNFing... I cannot DNF a book and I have such a hard time DNFing a series once I've started. This is inspiring because there are series I do not want to finish, but I feel like I need to because I've started... I love this video! I also just tandem read TOD and EOS and needed to take a break from fantasy for a while - that tandem read is a fun idea, but just too much if you have other books you want to read!

    Someone has probably already said this by now, but The Hobbit is much easier to get through than the LOTR trilogy. It was written for a younger audience so it’s a faster read. I loved The Hobbit, but I’m on the fence about the LOTR trilogy.

    First of, what's your cats name? He is SO CUTE! Second, I'm like 44% in "The Raven Boys". I've tried it years ago, didn't really get into it. Started again last month, got this far in and... I don't know. I sort of soft DNFed it. It just felt so hard for me to go on, like walking against heavy wind, or something. I don't even really know why. There's a lot of childhood trauma that God has been helping me unearth for the past three years, so I'm really having a hard time finding any enjoyment in anything, even in things I used to love - like reading. *sigh*

    • @RaesReads
      @RaesReads 19 дней назад

      Haha, we have two and my husband named them (of course 😂) and they are Fish and Pommes - AKA fish and chips, only with the chips bit being in German! Fish was the one going ham on the treat in the video clip I just finished The Raven Boys last night and I ended up giving it 4 stars. I took off one star for similar reasons that you mention, actually! I'm not sure why, but it just took me a while to get into it and the beginning felt a bit slow, I guess? I'm not sure what exactly it was, I just wasn't too crazy about the first half. I did start to get much more interested at the 40/50% mark, though, so if you are already almost at 50 and still not feeling it too much, then maybe the rest won't be that intriguing to you either? I might maybe suggest getting to 51% or so and seeing if it's any better, but maybe it's just not a good fit for you and that's alright too! Oh no, I'm sorry to hear this 💜 I was just reading Atomic Habits and I feel like it might be a bit encouraging in your situation right now! It was talking about how we sometimes feel like we are not making any progress in a certain aspect of life and we can get so frustrated and hopeless due to this, because a 1% difference in something each day or month, etc, is typically not noticeable. However it does add up! He compared it to an ice cube melting. You might be in a room that is 5 degrees Fahrenheit and you put an ice cube in front of yourself with the intention of melting it by warming up the room 1 degree at a time. You will get all the way to 31 F and not a single thing will have visually happened to the ice cube. It's still sitting frozen right in front of you, however alllll this work has been happening in the background the entire time. It might feel like it's been hard work for nothing or that things are even going backwards, but with just a bit more work to get to 32 F, all of a sudden the ice cube starts melting and soon after it's all gone. All the background work built up and it paid off in the end. I am hoping and praying that it is like this for you, Katherine 💜💜 I personally know how tough it can be to work through childhood trauma and it sounds like you have put in all this work inside of yourself for the past 3 years and hopefully you will soon feel better and stronger than ever before and then find so much joy in your hobbies again 💜☺️

      @@RaesReads That's funny! Also, I love German. I love languages in general. It's just all so fascinating to me. I love listening to songs in other languages, after finding proper explanation's of the lyrics so I know what I'm listening to. You actually inspired me to pick up "The Rave Boys" today. I hadn't read since September, but now I am 66% in after like two hours. It still feels very draggy for me, but now hope of actually finishing it is driving me on. I'm sure God has some analogy for me there how me waiting on Him feels like this book, and if I just push onwards, I'll get through it eventually. Definitely a way to make me feel hope, as I'm really scared of feeling, for many reasons. I do know that I have grown internally in the last years, it's just that the more I go on, the less easy it seems to get. I was very naive back then, going into journey with God with almost fairytale like expectations, so now I'm afraid to have any. That makes it hard to stop clinging to old habits, or see any light. And also, it's super Fall-like in my country - lots of rain, gray, cloudy etc., - so it's quite sad and cold, and dark. Not helpful for my mood. Honestly, I didn't think you'd answer, but I'm glad you did. I haven't been commenting a lot on this channel. I had a different one with and old name before that I used more for comments, but people rarely understood me so I just stopped commenting. And when watching your video I thought I need a book buddy. I pretty much have no one, for various reason, other than my very toxic mom whom I live with, so that's not fun either. So... maybe, if you want, we could connect somehow? Though I'm not on any other social media, I could give you my email? Maybe.

    Some of my thoughts: I agree with you so much about ACOTAR. I loved the first three books, hated the novella, and, having heard some not-so-great things about Nesta's book, I don't particularly care to read it. I don't want to spoil the original three, because I heard the characters change for the worse in that one. I don't want to risk it. I've read "The Mortal Instruments", and I love it, but I'm biased 'cause I absolutely love the entire world, the Shadowhunters. I just love the entire concept and how many different series there are in the same world, just different timelines. And it feels fresh every time, with new characters, and there's so much bonus material that the author releases as well. It's very immersive. I did read "Divergent" years ago. I loved the first one, second was okay, but I LOATHE the third one, lol! I also think the plot had potential, but it went waaaay off as the series progressed, at least for me. Oh, "Beautiful Creatures" is such a throwback for me. I was in my teens reading it, I believe, and I could never figure out what the heck was even going on. Like, they just threw in so many new creatures and I was like just so confused, I could not get into it. I don't even know if I read just book one, or did I read book two as well. I do remember I only had the two (I had them in Latvian, my native language, as I wasn't reading in English yet. The other two books may not have even been translated at that point). I wasn't over the moon for "The Hazel Wood". I read it years ago first - I got it in a FairyLoot box. I reread it last month. I found it taking place in the contemporary world a little too long, the fantasy world itself was underwhelming, and I couldn't stand Alice, or her mom. I did kinda like Finch though, so I'm slightly curious to see what comes of him, so maybe I'll get to book two someday. When it comes to "Me Before You" - I read it years ago again, and I didn't tend to read a lot of contemporary, preferring fiction for escape from the real world. It ripped my heart out and put it back in, but I loved it. At that time I did have the other two books, but I was so heartbroken that I couldn't get into them. But regarding the topics of this book - I don't think it's fair to imply she meant it as an insult to disabled people or whatever. There's an article on people.com where the author shares that at the time of writing the book she had two relatives in her family who needed 24/7 care. On top of that, she heard a story of a young man who, after an accident, became quadriplegic, and eventually convinced his parents to take him to end his life. So, it's these two things that were on her mind as she was writing the story. Ultimately, there are many many books out there about different heavy topics. It's okay of the book was not for you, but I don't see that as an indication that the author is an awful person, or that her writing is bad, or whatever. There's many many books out there about extremely heavy, traumatic topics and just because something like sexual violence, or domestic violence exists in a book it doesn't mean the author condones it. I wish conversation was more encouraged these days, but too often, it's not. Just my personal opinion, of course.

      Ooh, I love comments with all the thoughts like this!! 😍💜 It's nice to hear someone with the same thoughts on ACOTAR. People keep pushing me to continue with the series, but it's exactly how you said - I just want to keep it how it is in my mind with the first 3 and not ruin anything. I do really love books like that (immersive, lots of variety, etc) and another person said they think the series gets better as it goes on, so I think I will officially give The Mortal Instruments a proper go! 😁 Haha, good to know that I appear to have made a good choice in stopping Divergent now! Yeah Beautiful Creatures was perhaps a little chaotic, I think 😂 You summed up basically *all* of my thoughts about Hazel Wood!! I agree with everything you said about it. I also loved Finch and I ended up reading book 1.5 - his short story. I liked it much more than the main book, but not enough to continue with the series, I think... As for Me Before You, thank you for sharing!! I didn't know that she had this background, so I appreciate you letting me know this info 💜 Warning: this is very long, haha, sorry, but here is why I disagree so strongly with Jojo Moyes' take on this situation: I have a similar background to her (knowing and even partially taking care of multiple severely disabled people) and I find that the care *mentally* for these people is severely, severely lacking (at least in the US). My great aunt, for example, was a dancer until MS took away her ability to move anything other than half of her face. Every single time we met people or went out, people would pity her and just talk about how sad it was that she couldn't dance anymore. This is incredibly depressing to live with, on top of such a severe disability and it gives the feeling that your life doesn't matter just because you can't do your past favorite hobby. The best experience we ever had was someone saying 'Im sorry to hear you can't dance anymore, what a shame! What are your favorite hobbies now?' with a smile. That person made my aunt feel like her life after MS still was valuable, whereas even everyone in the medical field made her feel like it was over just because she couldn't dance anymore. They all only ever talked about what she could *not* do, not what she loved now. I saw a lot of my aunt in Me Before You, only the difference is that I feel the author pushed the idea that, yeah, your life *is* basically sad and useless now. You can still have fun and temporary joy, but only if you get a really special person (the FMC) to try really, really hard to make it work. It will never be easy though, and you will still be depressed and ending your life is the best choice. That's what it read like to me and I find it extremely harmful that there was little attempt to help him with his very obvious depression clinically (doing fun things is not enough to cure true, brain-altering depression like what you would suffer from in his case - you need to test lots of different medication and, ideally, attend lots of therapy) and it felt a lot like giving up to me. The book seemed to not only approve that mindset, but even push it as the best choice for the MMC. I disagree with that a lot. Of course anybody can always make their own choices and I don't think it is always giving up when this decision is made. I cannot ever imagine being in that situation, but I have just seen firsthand how hard it is to feel anything other than very depressed in this situation and I think the first step is attacking the depression and then for other people (all us non-severely disabled people) to stop treating severely disabled people as something to pity and like their lives are so sad now just because they can't do what they used to do. Jojo Moyes could have written a really inspiring book where a severely disabled man thrived (which is very uncommon in fiction), but instead she wrote this tragedy and I personally feel like that was just pushing the whole agenda the world already pushes sooooooo hard that life is just sad and pointless when you can't do the things you used to do and can't move anymore. So pointless that it should just be ended. Anywayyyyy, sorry for that LONG chunk of text, haha. Thank you again for sharing the info on Jojo Moyes' background when writing this book!! This did help me understand her POV more 💜💜💜

      @@RaesReads Yeah, I would normally want more of the series, but I feel ACOTAR really is best left as is for me. Especially if the author really did not do justice to the beloved characters. And I'd definitely not try the other one for Nesta. I feel like there wasn't even enough of a reason why she even was the way she was (I might be wrong as it's been a long time since I read the books), so the whole redemption arc to me just sounds like "let's make a bunch of excuses for her behavior because redemption arc!" For that I personally think the author should have established some kind of reason in the original books for readers to actually truly care for the redemption arc. All I felt was burning rage for Nesta. The biggest "Divergent" downfall for me was the ending (which you may know, since I think you said you've seen the movies), it was like a cherry on cake... except the bad way. The cake already tasted bad, despite the nice outside layer, then the cherry spoiled it even more, if that makes sense, lol! I guess it's safe to say your response has awaken my inner writer in ways nothing had for years! I did see the Finch book yesterday on Goodreads and put it in my TBR for the future. I'm not entire sold on the full sequel yet myself, as I can't get any books anyway now. And thank you so much for sharing your experience with your great aunt! It definitely helps me notice things I'd overlooked and understand your point of view better. I'm (technically) not disabled (It's a long story, but I have a back condition called scoliosis. I was diagnosed at 11, had surgery at 13, had disability 3 times, each time 2 years long, until mom stopped taking me to the commission. I've always struggled to see myself as disabled since I can walk and do things, even if there are limits), but due to my childhood trauma I've pretty much felt like Will in the book. Just worthless, not good enough (made to feel that way by my own family), treated like this waste of space that can't do anything right, not deserving of a life of my own, so I understand why I didn't question the book as much when I read it years ago. I couldn't. I believed all that was fed to me growing up. It was way before I found God and started to learn more about what I'd been through. I didn't even know anything was wrong in my life, or with my mental health, until 2021, when I ended up finding God. So I do understand how it could have been written in a more hopeful way. In fact, there's a man of God I follow who has a ministry, and he's in a wheelchair, yet he travels to US (he lives in Africa) for ministry, he prays for people, he makes workshops, he does so much, and he's also trusting God for healing. He says he feels more in his legs than he's technically supposed to, as God is working on his healing. I suppose it's also about being more attentive with mental health care. I've heard some horrendous things about US mental health care too.

    First video of yours I've watched (the algorithm has kept you hidden from me until now) and when you did your balancing act at the beginning, _Saphirblau_ caught my eye and I was wondering whether you might be German. Then you started to speak and I dismissed the notion. Until at 8:58 you said "Die Edelstein-Trilogie". The pronunciation and more so the intonation was so natural that I thought you must have been brought up bilingually! Mad respect! I read the series a couple years ago, which is why I recognized the book. Being male and not a teenager anymore, I'm not the target audience and even though I would have preferred it if the romantic gushing were toned down a little, I still enjoyed the series. I became intrigued because of the time travel aspect and that was done really well, I think. Not sure how beneficial it is to have a longer gap before resuming the series with book 3; it's probably helpful to still remember the previous books in order to keep all the time travel elements straight. But then, you don't seem to have issues with pausing and resuming multiple series, so maybe you're good. (My reading MO is very different, I almost always read series back to back.)

It's so fun that finally someone is able to recognize this series, though!! Everyone only ever knows all the English books, I love that you read die Edelstein Trilogie 😄 Hahah, I agree 100% that the gushing and teenage drama could be toned down a bit more, but I do also enjoy the series overall. I am just a sucker for any time travel books! As for continuing with the series, I re-read Sapphirblau not too long ago and I recently re-watched the first and second movies, so I think I am prepped for the 3rd book! Haha, you might like her, buuut you might not 🙈 She definitely is not for everyone, as her books contain almost no romance (they are soooo slow burn, it almost is non-existent, haha), and they are 100% clean. I feel like most people nowadays love romance and smut and KD definitely wont provide that. Most bad reviews I see for her are people labeling the books as 'childish' due to the lack of smut and romance in general. So depending on your preferences, she could be a hit or a miss! 💜

    Oh no I am sorry September was such a mediocre reading month 🥲 but glad to hear that October is already looking like its gonna be a lot better! I 100% agree with you that the miscommunication trope is the worst! If the characters all just sat down and talked for a bit there would be no plot 😅 that said I did quite enjoy Funny Story as well hehe Emily Henry is a trustworthy 4⭐️ average romance author for me! (Both characters for sure needed some therapy however haha) Also sad to hear about Once Upon a Broken Heart 😓 wondering if I should just read the second one and have my sister spoil the other two for me 👀

    • @RaesReads
      @RaesReads Месяц назад

      Thank you!! 💜 October is a *million* times better so far - I am super pumped about this month's reads, haha Exactly!! Haha. Worst and most unnecessary trope ever. I do like Emily Henry quite a bit, as well, though, even though she does use that trope a LOT. If I am in the mood to read romance, I know I can always pick up one of her books and it should be at least 3⭐, if not 4⭐! Hm, honestly that is not a bad idea, haha. If it were me, I might have read book 1 and book 2, but definitely not book 3. I 100% think having someone just tell you how it ends is better than reading the whole 3rd book. Book 1 is debatable, but I also feel like people might not enjoy the romance in book 2 if they didn't get the experience of the foundation built in book 1 🤔

That is such a blessing to have a family that is into that growing up! A balcony is definitely way different, though, yeah, haha. I personally am a huge fan of cloth grow bags for most plants on balconies! Not only is it less plastic, but they're so easy to move around so depending on the weather you can ensure they get plenty of warmth and sun, etc., and you can even fold them up in winter if you want. One of the biggest tips that helped me on my terrace is that you can plant most all things in smaller spaces and closer together than most people say. I plant almost all of my lettuce and salad stuff in a super small patch where I should technically only have 2-4 plants maximum. I also have all my tomatoes in 10L grow bags which a lot of people say is way too small, but I've never had any issues! I even plant marigolds or basil at the bases of all the tomato plants too (to keep away bad pests) and even with all of that, it's just fine!
