Grattan Test October 23' - Run 3 pt.2
As I said in part 1 of this clip, I did 2 full race distance runs back to back with just an hour between them. I'm having trouble with my neck muscles in the last 8 laps or so. Hard to keep my head up under lateral g force and having to hold the front of my helmet down on the straight. I was determined to finish this run as we were going right to the checkered flag that ended the day.
John had done far more laps than I did on the day but at 75 years young he challenged me to go as hard as I could. Eventually I had to let him go, the engine studdering got worse and with each hesitation of the engine the further he pulled away.
All in all, I'm pretty satisfied with my results at this test. I...

Grattan Test October 23' - Run #3 pt.1

This was the 2nd full race distance (30minutes) run I did on the day, just an hour after run #2. The cam split the run into 2 parts just like run #2 but this time both parts were up-loadable. My good friend and brother in Christ John DeBats was done for the day, out of his race suit and putting his boots on when I asked if he would suit back up and come out and run to the end of the day with me...

This was a 2 part clip, and, was about to get interesting as I just got a glimpse of my Bro Jerry Revely come out onto the track. I slowed and waved him by, then set out after him to get some good video. Unfortunately these gopro's cut your recordings into parts after 15 minutes or so, this cam (gopro waterproof) went 17:35 before clipping. The other 1/2 was all Jerry gettin' after it right in ...

Just my 2nd run in a CIK sprint shifter kart on a long track. Trying to learn from the karts/drivers on track with me, its QUITE a bit different animal that the full Laydown karts I have always driven. By the end of the day I had a good handle on it, we knocked a bunch of time off our lap times and was really only having trouble/losing ground in 2 corners. The engine/carburation isn't right whi...
Chasing Carb Tune and Gear Selection

After all the mods to this engine, along with the 40mm carb and LARGE volume pipe, I think we have to change final drive gearing (engine/axel) because not much seemed to work very well!!! When 2nd gear is too low (revs way up) and 3rd gear to too high (lugs & creates carb bog) then you certainly need to address the gearing. Generally, this is when I go to the tire rack in the trailer and choose...

Using the very old gopro hero cam here, I stall the kart then accidently shut the water pump off getting out to refire it. On the helmet cam of this run (run 4) I noticed the pump WAS RUNNING before climbing in. A bummer for sure, the tune looked so overly safe reading the plug and piston crown that burning it down on water temp was a kick in the balls. To see the damage and post test repair/re...

Very pleased with the adjustment to the Pop-Off pressure AND having figured out that the High speed needle circuit was the fix for the off corner bog/hesitation, I start this run with confidence that when I return it will have been tuned correctly and fine tuning can be made from this base set-up. After 2 runs and multiple needle adjustments it was time to give up on the OEM internal settings and open up the carb. The Pop-off pressure suggested by the Tillotson Factory was 0.6 bar, or 8.70 psi. It actually popped at 6.5-7 psi so I raised it to 10psi and reassembled the pump stack. Opening the needles to compensate for the leaner/higher pop off pressure I went out and started again to fin...

Yes, we still had trouble with "back-to-throttle" response after high rev WOT blasts, even in low speed/rev right turns. But, I feel better knowing pop-off (new spring) and jet change would not have brought a different outcome in Daytona. There is 1 more adjustment/change we could try but I had no motivati...

    I have to say or ask, do you not watch Temps? I'm surprised you're not watching the exhaust temp and coolant temp. I would say those are the two most important sensors.... shoot, I would even go as far to say it's more important than RPM shift lights. Bummer, anyway, hope you get it back on track or have already. Looks like a lot of fun.

    All im gonna say is ive never raced a 2cycle thats tuned to idle.. and race, its either or.. quiet making the engine run in the pit and only worry about making it run good on track. The fact that it idles without you in it to me mean your focusing on the wrong part of tuning, which is what our engine needs on track to perform, probabaly doesnt help that your starter is inboard. but notice when you had it tuned to idle it would leave.. because idle and race performance are tuned for completely different end of the rpm band also the random bogs are a result as well, probably entirely to lean because you tuned it to idle

    • @VortexdriverRPM
      @VortexdriverRPM Год назад

      Tyler, we lean the Low end needle to make it idle so we don't have to "babysit" the kart while it warms up. You'll notice I open the needle before taking off.

    • @VortexdriverRPM
      @VortexdriverRPM Год назад

      One either side of the driver! They are aluminum, and are great for absorbing energy in case of an accident. They have been built this way for 50 years or more with almost no incident of fire. This being a "Vintage" kart from the mid 80's is quite different from the modern full body karts of today. Modern karts use "nerf bars" under the bodywork with plastic or small aluminum tanks for fuel.

      The red kart had a 250 single cylinder engine. Not quite twice the power but much more torque than our Stock 125 for sure. The aerodynamic advantage here at Daytona is huge as you can see. It would be very hard for me to run with that type of kart at say Mid-Ohio. Not imposable, just very tough. Thanks for looking in!

    • @VortexdriverRPM

      Not really, at least not the way this engine/carb is set up. There are "remote adjusters", its an old school Automotive speedo cable with machined aluminum ends and its located up on your steering wheel. That way you dont have to look away from where you are going. At the time we shot this I was just shaking down the kart, we had just bought it.

    I've watched a bunch of your videos now of both the flathead and the f125 and man it has got to be a mind trip going back and forth between the two, the flatty seems alot more momentum based and you seem to want to keep the throttle flat as much as possible

    • @VortexdriverRPM
      @VortexdriverRPM 2 года назад

      Guys laugh at that Flat head kart but its not simply gas on and turn. It may not be blindingly fast but its still faster than the grip of the tires in some corners. Getting off the throttle will kill your momentum but so will drifting the tires. I have not driven it enough to work it out completely but a bit of brake riding is the answer to it. In very slow corners you just have to deal with the lack of power.

Hitting ANYTHING in a kart is going to hurt, but, I have seen some horrific looking wrecks and the drivers were not injured other than some bruises and scrapes. Other times, and very few, we have had folks air lifted out, and, some don't make it. I lost my best friend at 15 to a crash at Road America. Exact cost is hard to determine, many components are hand made on these karts. I would guess $7-9 thousand could build one of these complete ready to run. Any restriction per class is in the Sanctioning Body rule book. The rules vary by region/Series but for this kart really just bore & stroke/engine displacement.

    • @VortexdriverRPM
      @VortexdriverRPM 2 года назад

      The Black kart has a TM K9 engine, mine has the Vortex RVS and the yellow/orange kart has a Pavesi. All models from near the same homologation period BUT.... the Pavesi has a "gear" in the gearbox the other brands do not. Our 6th gear is equal to their 5th gear..... when they shift to 6th they really have an overdrive so to speak. Its not as simple as gearing our axle and engine "taller", which we do, with tire circumference and engine/axle gearing. But again, there is a sweet spot per the track layout AND most importantly where the finish line is located! All these things have to do with our final gear selection as that will effect performance everywhere. As you may have seen, we beat the fast guy to the line so I think our set-up selection was as good as we could hope at that time. Thanks for looking in!!!!!

    Trevor, for some reason I can see your post but can't reply directly to it. This particular kart is "Vintage", no bodywork or floor tray like the modern karts. It is also called (vintage or modern) an Enduro Kart or a "laydown kart. This kart has a Yamaha 100cc Kart specific engine and an oil cooled centrifugal clutch on the rear axle. They run on auto/bike racing circuits of 1.5 miles in length or longer.

  • @BennHerr
    @BennHerr 2 года назад

    Looks like a fun ride. Took him about two corners to figure the kart out. Probably add a tooth or two to the axle and try to get the rpm to 6000 but he would also get faster as he fine tunes the fast lines. More teeth would help to heavier drivers too. At 6K life on the engine should be good. Just change the oil often and make sure things don't come loose.

    • @VortexdriverRPM
      @VortexdriverRPM 2 года назад

      We took a guess at it derived from the Animal gearing. We started with the OHV gear, added 6T to the rear after the first runs on the Flathead, and still have yet to see 6K with a 150 lb guy in the car. We need to drop teeth on the clutch, it has 20 T currently. All good info, thanks for the insight! Brian Carlson said 6500 max on a box stocker in road race form. I do retard the Ignition timing from Std but that is not an ICC/KZ issue.
