A SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM (1990) - Movie Review
I liked the 1st one love the cinematography with the dark hallways and random tv screens lighting dark scenes up. Ordered 2nd will give it a watch and let you know what i thought.
That looks fantastic, Alan. I never got around to reading any Famous Monsters of Filmland but they look fantastic. I’ll look this book up.
Cheers Bryn. Yeah, it's definitely worth checking out, as it's a fantastic book.
just watched blazing magnum great movie. stuart whitman his best movie. vintage classics did you get it. and whats with this bloody warning before the films says it might afend people gggrrr then dont buy it
Hi Gary. Glad you enjoyed Blazing Magnum (sounds like a Dirty Harry movie!). No, I haven't seen that one yet. I agree with you about these stupid trigger warning. They need to stop all this nonsense, as there is no need for it.
Great review Alan. I grew up on this magazine also and have 96 issues including the first two. I first started buying them back in the sixties and yes they were very difficult to find. Think I'll have to get a copy of this great looking book which I've had my eye on for a while.
Hi Stephen. Glad you liked the review. Yes, as I say in the video, this mag was a HUGE staple of my growing up. I only wish I could have bought every single issue, but as you rightly said, they were so hard to get, and still are. Yes, do check this book out, as it's well worth the money.
Looks a nice book. Really interesting. Thanks for showing it to us. I had something similar years ago, but sadly I lost it when I moved house. Cheers.
Hi Geoff. Yes, it's an awesome book. Glad you appreciated my showing it to you. Sorry to hear you lost your book when you relocated. I remember having quite a few horror cinema books back in the day, most of which were borrowed from my local library. I am starting to re-grow my collection now, and I always get a huge buzz out of discovering a new title on Amazon etc. The three Gothic Cinema books by Jonathan Rigby - a man who certainly know his stuff when it comes to horror cinema - are especially brilliant!
Now this is what I'm talking about. This is absolutely my kind of thing. So incredibly well illustrated too. What an amazing tribute to our beloved classic movie monsters. Thanks for sharing this with us Alan, I thoroughly enjoyed watching this and I'll be looking out to grab a copy for myself.
Definitely Tom! It's a fantastic book. And yes, as you say, the illustrations are just awesome. It is indeed a great tribute to all those iconic movie monsters we all grew up watching. Glad you enjoyed the video, Tom. Yes, do check out the book, as it's definitely worth every penny. Thank you for watching.
Just love universal monsters movies just picked up Frankenstein steelbook in my new video up its fantastic 😍, book looks fantastic mate 📚👍🏻👍🏻
Yes, me too, Stuart. I have all my favourite Universal monsters on DVD, Blu Ray and 4K. These were the monsters that first got me into horror, especially Karloff in those awesome three Frankenstein Monster movies he made. By the way, I watched your video in which you showed that Frankenstein steelbook. Absolutely brilliant! Yes, it's a fantastic book, mate, and one definitely worth checking out. Thank you for your comments.
@@Truegho yeah my favourite is bride of Frankenstein it's a beautiful film 🎥
Looks like a Great book brings back alot of memories 🧟♂️
Cheers George. Yeah, it's a fantastic book.
@@Truegho i ordered a copy myself but not arrived yet cant wait..
Fantastic! Good for you, George. I bet you can't. I was like that myself until it arrived. Well worth the wait, as it's an awesome tome!
@@Truegho yeah deliverly today fingers crossed oh and off topic but did you see Salems lot is being released 3rd october streaming on MAX...
The wolf man trailer online now 😊
alan how are you love that movie very funny witch got me thinking about the movies on bbc and itv are poor what happend to the hamer films witch we got on friday night and midnight movie on bbc 2 poor tv now tc steve
Hi Steve. Thanks for your message. Yeah, it was a real fun movie. I agree with you about the poor quality of TV progs now. Not worth watching
Great review, Alan. I’ve been curious about this one for years and have thought about getting it for the collection but wasn’t sure if it had any horror elements or it. Sounds like it does?
Glad you enjoyed the review, Bryn. In regard to the degree of horror element it has, well, I would regard it as more of a "body horror" movie than anything else, as there are a few scenes of twisted necks and joints, shotgun blasts making gaping holes in bodies etc. It also gives a nod to the old Universal Frankenstein movies, as it is set against a backdrop of constant thunder and lightning, giving it the real, creepy old-dark-house atmosphere. The glowing youth-preserving potion also reminded me of the glowing-green potion in Reanimator. So yeah, all in all, it is a real crazy, zany film, Bryn, which you might enjoy.
@@Truegho Sounds great! Thanks, Alan.
No worries, Bryn.
Love this movie 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Glad you enjoyed, it Stuart.
To be honest, Alan, I've known about this movie for donkeys' years but it's never appealed to me. Not really a fan of any of the cast members. I think I'll skip this one again. Cheers.
That's fine. Cheers Geoff.
Yeah its a fun movie, i not seen it in years i might see if i can pick it up and give it a rewatch, thanks for showing alan 👍
Cheers George.
It's a shame really that Anthony Perkins didn't go on to do bigger and greater things after Psycho. His performance in that really showed the quality of his acting and yet I find, (apart from the odd little gem here and there) the majority of his movies are pretty vanilla. A bit of a waste if you ask me as he's really good on screen.
I totally agree, Tom. There one or two good ones he made after Psycho, particularly PRETTY POISON and EDGE OF SANITY. His performance as Norman Bates, though, will always be my favourite.
On a film Noir Facebook group, they said this film is a masterpiece. Nobody disagreed 😂
Yeah, as I said in the video, this movie has been regarded as something of - ha, ha, ha - "masterpiece" by some. Definitely wasn't for me, and a lot of people agree with me on that. Another Marmite movie, I suppose.
I'd not even heard of this film before, Alan. Sorry it sucks. 🤣 I mean the cast is superb, but they went wrong somewhere. Cheers.
Hi Geoff. Yeah, I hadn't heard of it until I came across this new release. And yeah, I think they went wrong EVERYWHERE with this car crash of a film. There was not one single redeeming quality about it. Definitely Anthony Perkins's worst movie ever. Thanks for your comments.
Yes virgin witch mortuary from beyond 4k 88 films November 😊
Three great films.
I'm not into courtroom dramas, Alan. Rather boring. Jagged Edge was about the best. And was that Diana Dors film you liked Yield To The Night? I hated it. So depressing. Not a fan at all. 😂
That's fine. Everybody to their own taste.
can you get this in 4k? I'm sure you can lol I not laughed like this for a long time I liked how you kept your face straight to start with then that was it lol
I think so, Carl. Glad you were tickled by my little rant (lol)! I always like to pepper my blunt criticism with a bit of humour here and there. I think it enhances the enjoyability factor of the video. Thank you for watching.
was he guilty then ? lol
Dunno. Didn't care. Switched it off near the end, that's how much I hated it (lol)!
Just pre order eyeball 4k special edition website exclusive 88 films November
Doomwatch on the way in post 88 films 🎥 😊
I will be ordering that too.,
Yeah i agree it was a real let down very slow i wont be revisiting it anytime soon
Definitely.
alan love the review its a trial to watche tc mate steve
Glad you liked the review, Steve. Yeah, the movie definitely WAS a "trial" to watch!
The Psycho franchise after the original were a pile.
Wow, was very surprised to hear you didn't like the Psycho sequels. I loved them.
I bought this a while ago,I agree 100% a total yawnfest🥱I couldnt make heads or tails of it! As you say Anthony Perkins was such a great actor I thought I was in for a treat!!!!! Absolute arty-farty pretencious GARBAGE!!!!!😊
Well said, Stej! Yeah, it really was most disappointing. I hated every minute of this crazy, weird, over-talkative, borefest of a movie. Not only the worst Perkins movie I have ever seen, but actually one of the WORST movies of ANY genre I have ever seen. And they called it a - ha, ha - "masterpiece". Whereabouts????
This movie was a complete and utter pile of POO. Definitely Perkins's worst ever.
That was my first James Herbert book the rats I loved it, and after that I wanted more
Mine too. First read it in Sept 1975 and it truly my all time fave horror novel.
Didn’t John Carpenter do something called the fog
He did, but it wasn't from James Herbert's novel. It was the movie featuring the ghostly pirates.
I love the novel nobody true 🌼
Yes, I like that one too.
African Queen 👸 comes to 4k studio canal 😊
Cheers Gary. However, I won't be getting that, as I am not a fan of the film.
Some good finds there Alan and a nice bit of variety too.
Thank you, Tom. Glad you liked the video.
Great video Alan, i just posted my review and i think we both enjoyed this release 👍
Hi George. Glad you liked the video. Yeah, it's a great release. I will check out your review.
@@Truegho no problem al, appriciate it 👍
Is that Film Treasure's reliable? They seem a bit pricey with VAT etc.
They are a bit pricey with the addons of VAT etc. However, I love their quick delivery.
Just had orca the killer whale 4k steelbook and taxi driver 4k steelbook and the curse of the crimson altar new on 88 films the blood beast terror and doomwatch on pre order also juggernaut eureka November with Richard Harris classic 😊😊😊
I too will be getting Crimson Altar and Doomwatch.
Thanks for showing your pick ups alan, i got quite a few pick ups this week myself, il show them over on my channel 👍
Thanks George. Will have to check out your own pickups.
Great haul Al 😀🍿🎸🎶 I wasn’t all too fussed about ‘The Uninvited’ when I first watched it couple year back; perhaps I should revisit it at some point. I love to check out more Anthony Perkins films; ‘The Trial’ could be a really good film 😀👍
Cheers Sam. Glad you liked the haul. I watched the Anthony Perkins movie THE TRIAL last night, and was so disappointed. It was terrible - a major borefest with a story that made no sense. Definitely his worse movie ever. Haven't watched The Uninvited yet. Have got the novel too, so I will probably read that first before checking out the movie again (I always love to compare both book and movie versions of a story).
This movie I’ll admit was rushed but had my favorite live action Dracula ever just my opinion.
That's fine. Everybody to their own opinion.
Great video Alan, you've got some really good, nice pickups there, thank you for showing us and talking about them, enjoy your commentary on the films and always interested to see what you've picked up. Cheers Mate, nice one. J Have a good week Alan.
Thanks so much for the kind words, Jamie. Really pleased to hear you enjoyed the video. Yeah, you have a good week yourself, mate. Speak soon. Take care.
Kenny Everett should have played Cupid Stunt IN ‘Bloodbath at the House of Death’. It would have been far funnier and made more sense, as that’s the kind of movie title she would tell Michael Parkinson she’d starred in!
Ha, ha, you do have a point there!
Yeah, The Unliving is terrible. I’ve just got Bloodbath at the House of Death and enjoyed it. The Uninvited is ok. Nice Confessions box set. Great stuff, Alan.
Yeah, The Unliving was definitely Paul Naschy's worst werewolf movie ever. Glad you enjoyed Bloodbath At The House of Death. It's a great little fun/horror movie. Yep, the Confessions box set is awesome. Thanks for the kind words, Bryn.
Ever seen a shirt make a telephone call?
What movie is THAT scene in??
Loads of British comedy stars in those confessions series! Ooh er missus, I grew up on those on tv in the 70s! 🙂
Definitely Kevin. Yeah, I grew up with all those 70s movies too. Great memories. Thank you for your comments.
I love Island of Terror, Alan. It's great fun. And as usual, Peter Cushing elevates the proceedings to even higher greatness 👍
Glad you enjoyed Island of Terror, Paul. Yeah, Peter Cushing always delivered whenever he starred in a movie.
Hi Alan, I remember watching Kenny Everette back in the day, those where the days, Pretty sure i have watched Bloodbath at the house of death but don't remember much. I liked Island of terror and plan on picking that edition up. I also remember the Confession movies and they are a lot of fun, i did prefer Robin Askwith over the other guy who was in the other Confession movies, Am i right in thinking Linda Hayden was in one of those movies? or am i thinking of another Hammer actress.
Hi Mark. Thanks for your comments. Yes, you are absolutely right about Linda Hayden - she did star in one of those 70s comedies. I think it was the Taxi Driver one. Yes, I too have fond memories of watching Kenny Everett back in the day. Am really looking forward to watching Bloodbath At The House of Death in glorious HD. Glad you enjoyed Island of Terror. I will be watching it tonight.
Some good pick ups Al, thanks forvsharing your thoughts ✌️
Thank you. Glad you liked the video.
Yes i thought island of terror was like a 60s Peter Cushing movie fun movie Edward judd always enjoyed his performancess , great pickups alan, the weak and the wicked looks good mate 👍🏻,
Hi Stuart. Thanks for your comments. Glad you liked the pickups. Yeah, Island of Terror is a good movie if you like your 60s flicks with a bit of Dr Who/creature-feature-style narrative thrown in. I will be watching it tonight. Yeah, Mr Judd is a great actor. He was good in First Men In The Moon too. Watched The Weak and The Wicked the other night, but unfortunately did not think it was as good as Dors's other prison movie, Before I Hang, which was brilliant. There were too many flashbacks and weak, uninteresting characters in it for me. Buy hey ho, that's just my opinion. You might like it. Cheers Stuart.
@@Truegho I might try before I hang aswell 👍🏻
Yes, do give it a go. You might enjoy it. I certainly did!
alan lov e the vid keny everett great guy sadly missed have the network dvd would love the bbc shows but i cant ever geting the woke world we live in also dick emery loved him to saw a great movie horror at the black museum the start with the woman with the spy glasses never forget hope you are all welltc steve
Hi Steve. Thanks for your comments Yeah, I am good, thanks. Hope you are well too. Yeah, Kenny Everett was brilliant, as was Dick Emery. Yeah, I agree with you about that horrific opening scene in Horrors of the Black Museum. What a shocker that was!
Nice buys. At least you're honest about the ones you don't like. Cheers.
Thanks Geoff. Glad you liked the pickups. Yes, I always like to be honest about every film I watch. No point in being economical with the truth if you think a movie is really, really bad. Have a good week, mate.
