Fall Colors - Flying high above
Fall happens to be one of my favorite seasons of the year. Landscapes across this great nation of ours are painted with vibrant colors and remind us just how wonderful nature can be.
During one mild evening in late October my sons and I went for a flight to record the height of the fall colors in eastern-Missouri.

Tom's Sonex "Explained"
Просмотров 22 тыс.15 лет назад
A short video explaining my Sonex aircraft and the airport I fly out of.
I wish I could give this video 20 👍... Love all of Tom's vids and his style, many thanks to the Huebbe family for keeping his content available.
Do you know if his sons are still flying? I come back to this content from time to time because it was produced so well.
@@PurveyorOfCuriosities I honestly have no idea, haven't seen them on the forum or elsewhere. Tom and his style are a big influence for my vids. I hope they are still flying.
@@LeftSeatAdventures wait, you’re the guy who bought the Sonex aren’t you? I like your videos too! I recently bought plans to build a Hummel H5 that I can fly light sport, but I’m drawn towards the Sonex/Onex because of the acrobatic characteristics. I’m not interested in acro, I just like the plane being able to take more g forces. I know this is not the place to have this conversation so I’ll delete this comment after you reply, but any regrets on your purchase? I think I’d rather buy a Sonex, (preferably built by an A/P) but I’m willing to finish or even build one in a pinch.
@@PurveyorOfCuriosities Yup, I bought a project Sonex and spent about 9 mos. going through it in my garage. I'd say no regrets on the Sonex itself. It's a simple, easy to fly and economical design. Good parts and tech support from the factory. But it is small, a B model might fit someone my size with a passenger better. I don't know if I'd go polished again, kind of a pain to keep looking nice. The Revmaster engine has been my biggest headache, not really the engine itself, just known issues with the ignition and charging systems. My only real regret is not being able to fly it as much as I'd like to. But that's life! (I don't think you have to delete your comment, may be helpful to someone someday.)
@@LeftSeatAdventures thanks! I’m a big guy.(6’1”, 285) I am considering building a Onex. Maybe I can convert a Sonex to a center stick just for the room. I’m not interested in flying anyone else but myself. Good luck with your channel! The Sonex interviews were great. Keep up the good work!
Beautiful ❤️ I've taken my boats all thru this area. Only have gotten to see it from the air a few times. Thanks!
Great video!!! Thanks for sharing!
Such an indescribable loss! I still watch his wonderful videos regularly, and wonder if this had happened in Tom's tail dragger, would it have stayed upright?
Tom is gone, but not forgotten. He was such a nice guy. This video helped me keep going and finish my Sonex.
WOW,,,the fabric on that stabilizer does not seem very tight..should have been shrunk a little more i would say
Hey mark I bought Wayne Flowers Sonex and love it can you tell me what tank did you use for your smoke system. thanks
Flight time, average ground speed and fuel burned? Looked like a great family outing! Wouldn't know to do with all that green. El Paso is brown. B. King Onex s/# 0189 N189BK
Tom, very nice video - professional polish to it. What cameras did you use and what editing program or application? I have the Go Pro and NFlight and recently received the AV-HD camera as a Xmas gift. I have mounts for all three. Thanks for any reply!
Contour brand cameras for exterior shots. Sony HDR-CX560 for regular camera work. Sony Vegas Pro 12 for the editing software.
what size prop you using?
Thanks, Tom! Now that its been a few years, are you still happy with the VW choice? Or do you regret not stretching for a Jab3300 (or other option)?
Noel, Very true. This Max speed is 2-3000 ft. MSL.
Errick - Tom comments above that he sees 135mph for top speed. If he's doing that down low, a quick true-airspeed calculation yields: 135mph indicated @ 8000ft = ~156mph true.
I have flown everything from Ultralights, experimentals, and GA, ---C 150's, C152's, 172's, 182's, etc... and I have found the Sonex handles turbulence very, very, well for as small and as light as it is.
Another exceptional video!
I climb at 1000 ft/min at 90 m.p.h. single place (could climb even better at 70 m.p.h.) and 500-700 ft/min two place, depending on weight of occupant (again, could climb even better at 70 m.p.h.). I cruise at 115-120 m.p.h. at a conversative 20-21 inches of M.P., 2950 rpm. Max level speed is about 135 m.p.h..
Where are the performance answers for climb, cruise, max speed, etc?
From what I heard maybe 1/2 m.p.h.. I think people do it for the look.
What great videos , just to let you know you inspired me to buy one , proud new owner of sonex 541.... Smoke on !!!!!
awesome fly in , one day we hope to make it there , sonex steve and i SMOKE ON !!!!!!!!!
I noticed one Sonex looked like it was completely flush riveted, does this provide any increase in cruise speed?
Professional and entertaining as always!
Thanks Aaron!
Pricing is on their website sonexaircraft. com/kits/pricing.html Usually around $30k when all said and done
Wicked professional. So extremely impressive. You guys are awesome. :-) ...aaron
How much do these cost to build?
have you try to sit on the middle?? before imply that left wing is heavy ?? remeber you were sit at left side of fuselage
My friend is on hour 2 of Phase 1, too cloudy today. Want him to hurry up so we can go fly like this!
Another great video!
Nice video.
Yeah Bob, it's a great little town. The bakery alone is worth the trip!
Thanks Gary!
Thank you Tom for posting this excellent video. I may never build a sonex but it sure is nice to see how good they are.
Great movie, I need to visit Pella.
I want one!
great smoke system and video, keep them coming.......busy building sonex kit 1472, thanks Steve
Best smoke video hands down.....great system, keep them coming as I build kit 1472. You and Aaron post great videos, thanks Steve D.
Wow, that smoke system is awsome.............great video, you and Aaron shoot great video nice job. I am building Sonex kit #1472 and cant wait, thanks keep it up, Steve D.
It scares me when pilots say "Close enough." 0:52
I have seen loops done in a Mini-Max, but not mine. I did wing-overs and stall turns, that was about it. It is not intended to be aerobatic. Very docile flying machine. I could never get it to really spin even when I tried.
is it aerobatic?
NO, NOT an "Aerovee". Our own VW engine compilation on each of our planes. Using Great Plains crankshaft/prop hub, bearing as the base of the engine.
Hey Tom/Mark are you both running the Aerovee? The way that he was climbing looks like it might have a little something more under the cowl!
This Minimax was the "Eros" version modified for the VW engine. The Eros used the Rotax 503 which is actually about the same H.P. as the VW I was running---so, no, the speed range was the same----no worry about exceeding the VNE. The minimax is so draggy of any airframe I could not get it above 100 mph, W.F.O. throttle.
No, it is NOT an Aerovee. It is a VW that I built from mainly Great Plains Aircraft parts. Have about 450 hours on it now. No problems to speak of.
Do you have any issues with your AeroVee? I'm hearing a lot of negative feedback, what's your experience with VW?
Hope to be there this year.
my name is tommy george! haha!
@MrFlytiger SuperDri oil worked the best. No oil on the belly. A mixture of mineral oil and superdri left a film.
@MrFlytiger Not a whole lot when using Aviation Super*Dri Smoke Oil. I got it in One Gallon containers. Went through 5 gallons in one weekend.
