Yamaha Reface - turn the internal speakers off (DX, CS)

For the Reface range of keyboards from Yamaha, the little speakers are on by default, even with cables attached to the outputs. Turning on while holding D2 will turn them off. Great stuff, very innovative!
if you have the PRO 3 , why do you need this ?
GAS, not that there's anything wrong with that.
The Pro 3 is a VERY capable synth, and likely covers most of the ground the k2 covers. One thought though: would a gigging musician take their >1000 bucks synth to a live gig risking beer spills etc, or take a sub $200 box... And indeed, 'need' has nothing to do with it. 😀
@@abominablemusic yes
Sounds very nice.
Indeed, after working with this box over the last few days, I have to say, it does sound good.
@@abominablemusic I can definitely feel the Classic Doctor Who and sci-fi B-movie vibe. Lovely pure tones in there as well as the dirty growl it's known for. I'm sorely tempted myself!
Man I wish Behringer (or any synth Ive tried really) would invest a little effort into making the software run in Linux, but nope, can't use any of it. Arturia's software doesn't work either, gonna have to set up a dedicated Windows box for it, and I just can't tolerate being extorted for cash, or "subscribing" to something just to open notepad, it was bad 20 years ago, but it's out of control now IMHO, sorry, just bitching down here lol, but thankfully, it all works without the PC. At least it sees the Scarlett, be a drag if the audio interface didn't work.... 🤔
Given where Windows are going, I think Linux adoption is going to increase, the hardware vendors will have to evolve.
cool - I particularly like the first track you played here. I will be listening on spotify. I like the graphics too. See you Saturday.
Thanks mate!
Hello, so if I just want to control my notes, it should be fine, right? I should try.
sure, keyboard, pitch bend and mod wheel will be fine for playing a VSTi. Cheers!
On skulp se. It dont works :(( (???
Ah, I think the se was a 'lite' version, but I'm sure it's possible, maybe via USB. Modal seemed to have got the software side pretty sorted, I think I still have their app on my phone. You could try that.
Very nice.... Thank you!!!
no worries!
I don't know if you ever tried it, but it does accept and display cv as well. That's much more useful for me as I have it sitting next to Abacus and finally have a way to visualise what waveform it's spitting out.
what! yes, that's super useful! I wonder if the Grind can do this too - that would be useful.
That's a great sound - I'm wondering how it would sound with a violin bow too, and with a longer bowed sample.
I'm not even sure which instrument my bow belongs to. Also, it would likely sound better using a well maintained and rosin-fed bow.
@@abominablemusic hi, I'm pretty sure you were using a cello bow. We have a violin if you want to have a go with a narrower bow sometime let me know and I'll bring it over.
@@garystringa6 I don't mind borrowing it as long as no strings are attached...
Just got one myself finally. Yeah its really kick ass. Great video my brotha. Funally sonething a fellow old guy can understand. Very well done and thanks a million. Just happen to have the vmodular right here. Was thining the same thing. Really kick ass!! Hats off and many good ones my friend.
Thanks for stopping by and commenting! Enjoy the bundle, this is still my primary case and I use it all the time!
@@abominablemusic Kick ass. Yeah it's pretty insane. And enough to make you mad at times. Lol Love it. :) Keep on jammin man. Preciate.
DX200 is a very very good interpretation
Nice little desktop unit!
I'm in the same boat, just started looking into synths and was eyeballing the Reface DX until I got a killer offer for it. Been having a great time with it so far.
Glad to hear. Likewise, really enjoying mine.
The form factor of the reface series is a huge turn off to me. The mini keys are more or less unplayable, and the whole build is fragile and toy like. This, and the 400i$ish pricetag for each of them strikes me as extortionary and the cost is far more than any value you are getting. Yamaha would have been better off had they followed in the footsteps of their DX100 design, with vastly more playable minikeys and a much more robust mini form factor.
fair enough!
Yes I must have been at this place because I used to own one In fact I had all but the organ model. The one that has become legendary is actually the cp model. That is very nice. If I was to get another reface it would be the cp… Yamaha is missing out on little module versions of these amazing keyboards. The effects on the cp are really good. I am going virtual on everything……might get model d for fun but…..edit:for gods sake plug into one of those full size keyboards behind you lol.
Indeed, I've already played the reface with my Z1 keys, which was a blast. Yea, cp on my shopping list.
@@abominablemusic by the way its Pianoteq 8 electric keyboards that is stopping me from making the cp purchase and should be looked into. Hardware is becoming obsolete but gets more views…..I’m leaving comments. Who knows maybe a comparison video….anyway as you already know that dx is super cool and the reface series is turning into a legend. Dang I just might have to get the YC and complete the journey.
Get FB01 as its the worst, then do like on Bad Gear and innovate
I bought the MegaFM mkII and am very happy
Ah yes, I've seen this on Juno.
Fans of FM should check out the Yamaha GS-1 emulators (or buy an original GS-1!), more interesting sounds with 8 operators. Pre-dated the DX7 a couple of years.
8 operators! Wow, would love to play with that!
Actually, it only has four operators, the GS2 has two.
@@SpookyAlien-2001 I admit I don't understand the architecture, the GS-1 always sounded more rich than the DX-7, assumed it was because of the 8 operators. Electronic music wiki has this: The 8-operator voice architecture was not as impressive as it sounds, since the synth gave the user no choice of algorithms; the only algorithm available divided the operators into four separate carrier-modulator pairs, meaning that the types of complex modulations which the DX7 could do with two fewer operators were not available. Nonetheless, the GS1 was considered a breakthrough at the time that it was released.
tx802 is the correct one
It's a DX7ii in rack
Big rack mount synth, don't mind it! My Wavestation is the rack version.
DX7 and DX7 II are my favs. Can’t go wrong with them. Many don’t like them…but who cares what they like!
We care
You can go wrong with the original DX7 (mono output, mono midi, mono waveforms-sines only) .look at Stock, Achin' &Wateredownman... Of course if you're trying to emulate cheesy SAW stuff then, yeah ok you've bought the right DX....
The Reface DX is a nice stand in for the DX7 for some popular patches but can’t do it all. It doesn’t have to in my mind. It’s its own thing in some ways. You can make a Volca FM 2 a DX7 replacement plus it has FX. I own them both and regret neither. I do wish the Reface DX had more patch memory. IMO, the FX are more than adequate in a mix.
Thumbs-up for all the effects, I've many synths with no effects so I'm always hunting for reverb or delay pedals...
Thanks for this! I love fm synthesis as well and got myself the vintage Yamaha V 50, which is also a 4 operator fm synth. It has 16 voice polyphony, is very powerful all around and I got it for 170€ since it isn't one of the "famous" fm synths. That's bang for the buck supreme ;)
Yea, I think FM went out of fashion as folks went after 'analogue' sounding synths. Gotta say, playing with the Reface is a blast.
The later ones are updates so actually better. Good choice
Thanks so much for this introduction to the DX, Mark...Now I REALLY don't know which Reface I would get.....😆
Folks seem to love the e piano flavour of the Reface. So I think this is on my shopping list...
Hello abominable music, can you help to synchronise the tempo of a the 960 sequencer behringer and elektron analog rhytm mk2 ? I use for this midi output elektron to midi input CM1A.
Ah yes, modular vs hardware, where control voltage, clock, and MIDI meet (and often don’t play well). I’m not familiar with the 960 sequencer, but I’m guessing the Control Input accepts ‘clock’. Annoyingly, the CM!A doesn’t output the clock component of the MIDI input, although will put out Gate. I think the decision to make is what is the device that will determine the tempo. I think this would be the Electron. Then MIDI out from the Electron to CM1A, then use the Gate out into the 960 seq. That might work? Or, if you have another module that inputs or outputs clock, the could help. The Electron might have a dedicated clock out (if would be 3.5 mm output), this should run the 960. Let me know how you get on!
Hum, just looking at the manual for the elektron rhytm mk2, no dedicated clock out (surprising, most Korg synths have this now, although this is largely to support the volca range). So, yea, maybe use the elektron as Master and MIDI out to CM1A.
@@abominablemusic Thank you very much for your answers! Still no sync with the AR on my side, I will try with the Analog four tonight, I will tell you my results :)
@@abominablemusic Update: I managed to modify the tempo of the 960 sequencer via the elektron! In fact I now pass a midi IN cm1a cable to midi OUT of the arturia keystep and from the midi in of the midi keystep to the midi OUT of the elektron. My sequence on the 960 sequencer is not well synchronized with the elektron, I really have the impression that it is shifting. I will see if I can improve the synchronization by modifying some parameters of the keystep (Seq / Time Div / Rate). Maybe my midi chain is too long to synchronize a modular sequencer. Thank you for your help
@@tearoflead1938 Arturia keystep defo has Sync Out on 3.5mm cable, I'm pretty sure you could use this to clock the 960. Sometimes electronic music feels like doing a PhD!
Nice and inpired
Thanks! 😀
Nice vid, has made me want to pop to my local charity shop tomw to see if there's anything interesting there too.
indeed! I actually went hunting yesterday, but didn't find anything interesting. One charity shop had a child's tongue drum, but I decided to leave it (as I write this, I'm regretting that decision!).
I Found little in this video that gave me any information about how the unit works when recording instruments etc. I have already decided to get the smaller 2 input 4 out model so felt little in here to confirm my choice. Not really prepared or researched before you started.
The problem with Behringer is that they do NOT make software for Linux.
Ah, good point. They might, in the future, as Windoze are doing their best to loose customers. I actually rarely use the app, I tune using my DAW, and don't need to change the MIDI channel, but yea, I hear you...
I couldn't find out how to do the classic Hawaii Guitar pitch bend. There's a pitch option, but it sounds horrible. Nothing like the pitch bend of actual steel guitars.
Yea, these sample instruments have their own quirks, sometimes they are 'accurate' recreations, but often the team have tried to create something new and different.
Love that track, reminds me of something else, but can’t put my finger on it right now. 🤔
Oh no, hope I didn't accidentally plagiarize something...
@@abominablemusic No, I don’t think you have, it just reminded me of something, still can’t remember what though! 😆
Nice chill drum n bass style feel.
Oo, I feel a remix coming on!
Love the synth, love the pedal. Going to enjoy this video!
yea, I use this synth all the time now!
Very, very, very peculiar and odd......and very, very, very.....KEWL!!!! Really cool trick with the Volca Modular--on my wishlist--Thanks!
It's a quirky little synth, but nothing sounds quite like it!
An attenuator is like a volume control for a signal 👍
Ah yes, that much more useful than my explanation! Cheers!
Great job Mark, ‘Spring Loaded’ as a title? Just seems quite bouncy to me!😊
Spring Loaded! I love it!
cool! reminds me a little of a favorite, Terry Riley. Keep up that great music, abominable ;)
Terry Riley, what a legend. Have you seen the 'In C' documentary from, I think, the BBC. Adrian Utley was involved. Great stuff, it's on YT...
Nice, havent used my pro one much unfortunately. Have you tried working in a way where you send the reverb from the lex via direct out -> interface and record the fx separately? I need to try it myself and perhaps it can be a better workflow. Or perhaps getting more outs on an interface so I can send out the dry signal to my fx and send them back into ableton from my old mixer. 😅
that's a good idea! I have a spare input on my audio interface, so I'd just need to figure out how to split the signals so I have wet and dry on different channels. I see a follow-up on the horizon! Thanks!
@@abominablemusicI didnt realize it until now, but you dont have an analog mixer? If not then I dont know but if yes, then you can split it by goung ditect out from the mixers return channel (the one where your wet fx is on) and send this to your interface. Thats what I gathered and what I also need to test out, I unlike you just dont have more than stereo input on my interfac (UAD solo) so I need to find another way/upgrade first 😅
Sounds great! They pair really nice
Thanks, the pedal now lives on my desk so it's always ready!
Love the Pro-One. My studio partner has an original Sequential, and I have the Behringer clone. The clone is so good, and the price is absolutely ridiculous. You can get one now for a bit over $200 US. I paid around $330 for mine but it was still worth every cent (good luck finding an original in good working condition for that price). Super snappy envelopes, great filter, surprising amount of modulation possibilities. B clone adds paraphonic mode too.
Word, I think it's under-rated, and I use mine a lot. Actually, I need to double my modular so I'll be tracking it again later! Yea, I might get another! Cheers
It's nice to mix them in the Volca itself. Gives it a different vibe to mixing in the computer
Indeed, happy accident machine! Cheers!
Nice job!
Thanks! Need to revisit this technique...
8:30 That was the big question about the CM1A... Sad it cant be used as independent channels for different sequences... :(
indeed, I mean two separate outputs, ok, cool, oh, it's just a duplicated output... In fairness, this is likely the cheapest MIDI to CV module out there!
Nice thinking out of the box technique 👌
Thanks, always been a fan of radio, so I try and sneak it into my work, if only the noise!
That's a nice tune you're working on
Thanks, I actually just set up the same combo for another track. If it's too warm to sleep, I'll escape to my basement for some late night tracking...
What a cool bit of kit. I’ve just ordered one. Great video thanks.
Yea, I don't use mine ALL the time, but when I need it, it really hits the spot!
Analog delays have to use a lot of low pass to filter out the clock noise for the bucket brigade circuit. Funny that it's a sought after sound now.
ah nice one, I didn't know that but it makes sense! Cheers!
Sounds like Howard Jones, New Song.
Howard Jones - what a legend!
Really good stuff. So much can be done with so little (relatively). And, Grrrrrrr, thanks Ever SO much for adding to my GAS with that Flippin' Mystic!!! Grrrrrr.
Thanks very much. Recovery Effects make some interesting things! They are currently working on a percussion synth, lots of pure data and daisy flashing stuff going on... Cheers!
Great video as always. Nice to see a demonstration of the mystic.
Yea, Recovery Effects make some whacky stuff!
Nice! What was making that metallic jingly sound here?
It's a good question!! Weird right! It's largely the Mystic, a sort of fm drone synth, but I'm using the arithmetic function of the volca modular so it's a sort of 'additive' artifact. I think...
