I was having a look through the surviving works of the forgotten English composer George Frederick Pinto (1785-1806). Sadly, he died before reaching musical maturity but he left a number of songs, which seemed very interesting and harmonically daring to me. One of them, 'Eloisa to Abelard', particularly struck me in its recapitulation of early material in the final verse, but at double-speed, creating a sense of accelerating passion through the song, like the acceleration of a lover's heartrate.
In his song, Pinto set a section of Eloise t...

Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg (performed by Jonas Otte)
Просмотров 1442 месяца назад
I was particularly touched by Theodor Fontane's beautiful descriptions of his travels through the Brandenburg countryside, after I had spent a very happy summer doing conservation work in the moors and forests there. Back in civilisation, I wrote down my memories of this place in a piano cycle, responding to excerpts from Fontane's text. The key to this work is the theme of memory. The ‘amphith...
Vanished Time - Piano Quintet

I love finding recordings of birdsong online and then using software to slow it down to a fraction of its original speed. In doing so, I like to imagine I am hearing the song as the birds themselves do, birds' hearts and worlds moving so much faster than our own. To write this piece, I slowed down the song of a skylark to 1/8 of its original speed. I then transcribed the song in full. A strikin...
Music for a lost opera (homage to Jean-Phillipe Rameau)

'It is in the heart of man that resides the life of Nature's spectacle: to see it you must feel it.'Jean-Jacques Rosseau. When I was asked to write a piece which expressed emotions, I immediately thought of the French Enlightenment and of Jean-Philippe Rameau. For me, his works personify the belief that universal feelings can be expressed, even transmitted through music, something he maintained...

Dominic Wills - Four 'Visions Fugitives' after the Melodious Warbler
Просмотров 1125 месяцев назад
These short pieces derive much of their material from a series of recordings of the Melodious Warbler. I began by slowing down the original song, which is far too complex for a human ear to discern in detail, and picking out individual motifs, melodies and rhythms which I found particularly fascinating. Each musical moment went on to form one of the four little pieces. The song of this species ...
Rachmaninoff and the number 5: the beauty of maths!

Black clouds - Dominant chords in 'It's Raining Men' by The Weather Girls

This classic song builds suspense by associating dominant chords (chord 5) with tension and then consistently failing to resolve them, like black clouds circling, threatening a downpour.
Haydn told as a fairytale - a creative analysis of Haydn's Symphony no. 47

It is easy to forget the operatic roots of the Classical symphony. In this video I try to demonstrate the dramatic nature of Haydn's symphonies by constructing a 'plotline' centred around the motifs of Haydn's 47th Symphony.
Death, love and infidelity: Berg's relationships and his Violin Concerto
Просмотров 1602 года назад
Berg's Violin Concerto is, on the face of it, a requiem to the 18 year-old Manon Gropius, but it contains elements of Berg's relationships with many other women in his life. In the end, the piece proves to be more about himself than any one of them. To learn more, read Anthony Pope's work on the concerto, in the Cambridge Music Handbook.

Bitonal Elgar?? Two simultaneous key signatures in 'There is Sweet Music', op. 53 no. 1

An Ab Major key signature in the sopranos and altos and a G Major key signature in the tenors and basses? Doesn't sound like Elgar! Today I investigate whether this is an example of bitonality, or if there is something even more exciting going on...

Very dark, with some tension, and maybe a touch sorrowful. Great piece. I'd have loved to hear some truly lush moments - one of the great things about strings is how utterly resonant they can be together. Nice work!

Brilliant analysis; totally memorable, plausible, and musically sound. Many thanks for creating such a new, imaginative and fascinating video which I would suggest is essential viewing for anyone trying to understand this very fine symphony. By the way, Mozart knew it and liked it as well, he noted down the incipit (first few notes) on a scrap of paper - still extant - along with two other Haydn symphonies for later use in his own concerts. The military figure by the way is also very Mozart, in fact it is almost *the* Mozart rhythm and is very common in his works, but it only occurs infrequently in Haydn.
