PADDLEBOARDING SANIBEL ISLAND: Deep In The Mangroves of TARPON BAY!
Paddle along with me as we journey deep into the mangrove forests of Sanibel Island! The waves went flat at my local surf break so it's time to bust out the SUP, and the Commodore Creek loop in Tarpon Bay is a one of my favorite paddling destinations. Located in the Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge, this 2.5 mile route is gorgeous paddle for all ages and abilities. Although the waterways can get very busy here during the tourist season, it is still a paddle I recommend to anyone visiting the area. C'mon, let me show you around! 🛶

Sick 👌
If i want to move to cape coral this would be the closest option for mtb correct?
Yes I believe it would be. If you want to drive a little further there is Alafia and Carter Road but they are quite a ways north of you.
It's not a dust cap, it's a bearing pre-load adjuster. Just buy the tool.
it's only very light pre-load, so I'm sure a butter knife is fine!
You saw rattlesnakes?
No rattlesnakes. I did see a pretty large snake sunning itself in the trail on another ride there though.
For anyone that doesn’t know the trails well Wacky Wednesday is impossible to do properly.
Yeah I was pretty confused the whole time. Still a blast though. 👌
I have that bike changed to one-bi , left it as a 10 speed with an xtr 10speed shifter I prefer 175 crankset I just can’t hammer the pedals as aggressive with 170. I also tried shorter 60 mm stem Ended up going back to the original 70mm but flipped it over Thompson Carbon trail bar custom wheels I-9 torch Thing is dialed and it’s fast 27.7 with Chester’s on
Ideally for 1x you want a chain line of 47-49mm for non-boost 135/142 rear axle spacing. Boost frames 141/148 will use 52-54mm. Shimano specs there newer 1x cranksets at 52mm which is too wide for older 135/142 frames. For threaded bottom brackets that use 2.5mm spacers, you can try moving one of the spacers to the non-drive side. This will reduce your chain line to 49.5mm. That's what I'm currently running on a Deore M5100 1x11 and seems to be working great. In fact, I don't have room to move the chainring any closer before it hits the frame. SRAM DUB uses offset chainrings. -6mm for non-boost (49mm) and -3mm for boost (52mm). Chain line is also dependent on your tire width. Running wide tires may require wider chain line in order for the chain to clear the tire.
I am just mounting M5100 groupset to my older frame and I believe I will have some problems. Will write in few days how it goes
Unfortunately, your camera is pointing down, instead of out.
Funny! I’m sort of down-and-out kind of guy. 🤔
I come here I’m 8 and I cleared the big jumps super fun/
Sick! Keep it up my man.
Hey there! I'm not sure if you're still checking comments, but I'm designing a website for a riding group that rides these trails, and I was wondering if you'd be o.k. with me using a small clip of your video? :)
Hello, yes I do still check these comments. You can definitely use clips of this video! My only request is that you share the final product with me. I’d love to see it!
That is also my problem on the 12 speed cogs
Just put 2 spacers on the non drive side this will solve your problem
So you're supposed to keep that tab on the cranks near the bolts? I thought it was just for shipping or something and I took it out, what does it actually do?
Yes. That's the security/lock tab for the cranks. It prevents the crank from moving from its proper position if the left crank arm pinch bolts loosen up. Basically a last line of defense from what could be a catastrophic failure. I would highly advise replacing that as they are super cheap. Also, just as a general rule, I would suggest never removing any part/component if you're not 100% sure of what it is.
The black plastic tab in the crank arm is an alignment tab. There is a small hole in the spindle that is supposed to align with a peg on the tab when it's pressed down. This assures that the crank arm is placed on the spindle with enough spline engagement to keep it secure.
I have Giant Trance 2015. I bought Deckas 34T chainring and installed it on the original 2-chainrings crankset using long bolts and added 4 mm spacers. My chain line is 48 mm. Works perfect with Shimano Deore M6100 1x12. Moreover, I replaced rear hub 135x10 with 142x12 MicroSpline and installed dropout upgrade kit to have 12mm Thru Axle instead of a quick release. All the parts you can find on AliExpress
Cool setup. I also upgraded the rear axle to 12x142, I notice a little more stiffness. Not too familiar with Ali Express I would probably stick with EBay myself. Glad to hear someone else is rocking an older Trance as well though.
Great stuff! Have you done the caloosa blueway down by the Sanibel Causeway? Really neat trail if you're in this neck of the woods again! Great content!
Thanks! I've never gotten around to that part of the blueway. Have paddled a few other parts of it in Lido Key and also Englewood though. I'm familiar with the Sanibel causeway but unsure of where that trail would start maybe you could fill me in? I'd love to try something new on that island.
Cool video.. So as a rule of thumb I think you're saying or literally said (pretty much) anytime you have a factory 3x, and you remove one or two rings, you are affectively moving the chainline out, away from the frame since the lone ring (whichever size, small, medium or large) will now rest in the default/original position of the largest ring?
Not necessarily. On a 3x setup, if you just remove the smallest and largest rings in the front, you'll be fine because the leftover middle ring sits in the middle position. So you will have access to all your gears in the rear without much chain crossing issue. The lone ring will rest in the same position as before. You didn't move it, you just removed the other rings. The problem here was I had a 2x system and removed the smaller front chainring. So when shifting into the granny gears in the rear (largest rear cogs), the chainline was extremely crossed because you would normally shift into your smaller ring up front first to even out the chainline. That is why I ended up just buying the correct 1x front chainring for my setup. It sits just about exactly between where the small and large rings did on my 2x setup, evening out the chainline and allowing access to all gears without too much chain crossing.
@@jackattackoutdoors9797 Awesome man, thanks so much for the response! I read a lot about this (chainline) last night and everything you just said made a lot of sense, and provided a slightly different example to what I knew before. Not sure what kind of bottom bracket you have, but if I ever have issues with this I might try a sealed cartridge cheap bb with either longer or shorter spindle length.
Glad that helped! I had the standard Shimano type BB. Good luck and I hope you get your setup dialed in.
@@jackattackoutdoors9797 Thanks a lot man!
@@jackattackoutdoors9797 excellent information, I have a shimano XT 3 speed crankset ( FC700). I guess it is a 2009-2008 production date, I am looking for do a 1x convertion from 3x9 , but I am afraid the chainline. This video was pretty cool, maybe I can try to pickup a SLX crankset instead of to ensure good chainline. thank you
Drive side spacers leave one spacer. Dont put two.
You can start to move bottom bracket spacers on threaded bottom brackets. I suspect this Giant Trance has press fit bottom bracket so not sure it uses spacers.
Hi i'm from México, where did you buy that crank? I need one of those whit 34T but i can't find it...saludos
I bought the whole drivetrain brand new off of Ebay. Just used a general search for "Shimano SLX drivetrain". They'll usually be available from a few different sellers although I haven't checked since COVID. I also saw different options for the number of teeth 32, 34, sometimes 36 as well.
@@jackattackoutdoors9797 Thank's
Just use spacers on the ring
Hi is it a Boost frame?
Non boost frame. This is a 2016 model Giant didn't make the Trance with a boost frame until the following year, 2017.
Rode here today with the wife and sons. Great time, great trails. Did the green, doing blue next weekend. Will work up to black
That's great to hear! Remember you can always walk any sections of the black trail (Far East) that you can't pedal through, it's not a long trail - just something to keep in mind! Either way it's always an adventure. I too have had a blast out there with my family. Glad to hear you are doing the same!
@@jackattackoutdoors9797 my sons and myself are going there Sunday. Come to find out, my brother is one of the volunteers out there.
@@flman1284 what time are you riding?
@@jackattackoutdoors9797 not sure yet.... Probably around 9:30-10 am
@@flman1284 yikes that's pretty early for me (I work 3PM-1AM). If you pushed it to the afternoon I could make it. Otherwise no worries. I know it's cooler in the AM!
thank u very much for the info.,
No problem. Thanks for watching!
Cool video, bro.
Thank you! And thanks for watching.
Great footage, Jack!! My only suggestion would be to next time put some ORIGINAL Jack music in the background; both vocal and instrumental. Your "problem" is you just have too many talents!
This is awesome, Jack!!!
I know it’s late notice but I’ll be there Saturday if you’re still in the area and want to ride. I’d love to have a local show me the ropes. I’m a CRP virgin so looking forward to popping my cherry 😂
Hey man, I'm sorry to say I just saw this comment now (Saturday afternoon). I actually live a bit further away now up in Venice, but I'm due for a visit back down to CRP - I'd love to show you around. How long will you be in the area? Hope you have a blast out there today!
@@jackattackoutdoors9797 no worries brother! I actually gave my wife one of her Christmas gifts early (rollerblades 😂) so I ended up just staying in Naples and cruising around a local park with her. I live in Naples but am available to make the ride pretty much anytime. Let me know when you plan on heading back down to crp and I’ll be sure to make it!
Sure thing! Always open to new riding buds. I should be ready to head that way soon with biking season upon us (cooler weather). Now just let me get back in riding shape so I can keep up!
@@jackattackoutdoors9797 hahaha don’t put too much pressure on me man, I’m way out of shape myself, but I’ll do my best to keep up lol
@beaulink4775 do you ever ride at Baker park? Or bird rookery swamp?
This is so cool Jack!! Can’t wait to kayak here again, or maybe I’ll try the SUP!
Thanks! It's always a blast here! You're welcome to try the SUP anytime!

Cool trail, I'm headed back down to FL in a few weeks to hang out with friends and hit some trails around Otown....think I have trip to Lakeland coming now too!
Get it brother! You're hitting it at the right time of the year, it's getting nice and down cool here now!
You should put your go pro on the front of your helmet so it won’t smack trees just have to change the mount
I've definitely thought of that! Just seems like my visor would get in the way. Plus I superglued my Gopro mount where it's at on the top of the helmet. Considering upgrading to a gimbal soon anyways though, to get that handlebar point of view. So may not be an issue in the near future.
I wouldn't say there was anything really unique about the trail but it seems alright
It's all relative. Depends on what you're used to. If you've been riding in the Midwest for example, most trails in FL will seem unique & different. What I was trying to do with this video was highlight the more unique features that stand out in this trail system (compared to most of it which is flat). Wasn't necessarily comparing it to other trail systems.
Good vid. But what’s sad is homeboy totally told you it was Wacky Wednesday n you kept on riding it the incorrect direction. I’ve about smashed three other riders like yourself head on during WW because they didn’t follow Carter trails rules.
It's true. At that point I had gone halfway through the loop, had no familiarity with the trails, and would've had to just turn around and ride back out after a 2.5 hour drive there. There weren't many riders on the trail that day but I did the best I could to look further ahead, take it easy, and get out of the way when I did came across anyone. It's no excuse & I definitely felt guilty but I've been back since and redeemed myself riding the correct way. Sorry brother!
@@jackattackoutdoors9797 gotcha. Well luckily no harm was done. But there are a few fast blind spots out there that would definitely cause harm if riders were riding in the opposite directions. Anyhow, glad you had a. Good time out there. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
Thanks for the video. Can't wait to check this out in a couple weeks. I'm in Ft Myers
Just pre-ordered my first MTB at 51 years old. I'm not out of shape because round is a shape. I cannot wait to try this area and several others. Napes resident. Great video.
Thanks, Steve! You're never too old! May I ask what you ordered?
@@jackattackoutdoors9797 Fuji Nevada 29er 1.9
That's a sick first bike! Enjoy the learning process, it's one of the best parts of the whole experience.
@@jackattackoutdoors9797 I have a issue, I'm 5'11, I'm at the top of the height limit for the bike with 29s and a 17 inch frame. I was thinking about canceling my purchase and waiting for the brand Giant Talon 29er with a little larger frame. The Talon has 2 front gears and tubeless rims/tires. What do you think about my height vs a 17 inch frame? I'm gathering info from friends that ride and trying to get other opinions. Lol not basing my decisions on RUclips alone.
I'd hold out for the Talon. Fitment is really important and a tubeless set up makes a world of difference. At 5'10, I'm shorter than you and ride an 18" frame. Definitely better to get something you can grow into, rather than just having to buy another bike in a couple years. That's just my two cents!
Cool. I am moving across to Cape Coral. Happy to know there are some trails close by
Welcome to the area! You'll have plenty of trails to ride if you're willing to look for them!
@@jackattackoutdoors9797 I just moved to Ft Myers and wanna start riding in a few weeks
@@jackattackoutdoors9797 So are there really a lot? I checked Trailforks and didn't see a bunch in the area.
In Cape Coral/Ft. Myers, no. If you're willing to drive a bit, yes. Head north - you have Alafia, Balm Boyette, Carter Road, Boldly Go/Live Long & Prosper trails in Venice, all within 2 hours. North - you have Santos. Go east coast, you have Virginia Key, Markham Park, Oleta River, Amelia Earhart all within 2.5 hours. The best resources I've found to look for trails are Singletracks.com (link in this video's description) and Google/RUclips searches for Florida MTB trails. Hope this helps you find your next ride!
Swweeet vid man! And yep it's true Carter Rd. has some of the gnarliest trails in FL. I get out there as much as I can Alafia too.
So true! I love both trail systems but seems like CR is slightly more under the radar which is nice. Maybe we'll catch you out on the trail one of these days!
I went there today and absolutely loved it ... perfect for speeding ..Have there been any animal sites out there ... like bears or mountain lions ?
I have seen snakes (rattlers), deer, armadillo, gators and endless varieties of birds. I also have no doubt there are plenty of black bear out there. Luckily no run-ins with them just yet!
Nice video, good speed just went out there for the 1st time today. 2nd time riding at all, fun place for being 20 min away.
Jack are the trails open during raining season?
Rarely. I've tried to go several times but found the trails closed. You'd need a good few days to a week of dry conditions, and even then it's not certain. They do have a website you can check before you go to make sure though.
