    I remember Wimbledon 96, it was quite strange cos the draw in the men's was blown wide open by Boris Becker having to pull out of the 3rd round with a wrist injury. That really opened up the bottom half and then in the top half Sampras lost to Krajicek unexpectedly in the quarters

    Unbelievably, Jennifer had beaten reigning French Open champion Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario 6-1, 6-1 in the third round. The only person who managed to take a set from Jennifer en route to the final was Helen Kelesi in the quarter finals.

    What was the court where Seles and Studenikova played? It seems that it doesn't exist anymore or has been rebuilt. It appeared to have windows in the stands and pillars in the middle of the seating area.

    This was really something special for the fans. I was too young to see any of Navratilova's singles career, and it was exciting to see her play and win at an age that was pretty much unheard of. Inspiring.

    Sue Barker was commentating for Sky Sports in the UK and she said she'd picked up some gossip in the locker room about Arantxa in the final. Arantxa actually had two coaches during this period: Mervyn Rose who was trying to make her be more of a net player, and her day-to-day coach, Eduardo Osta. Apparently Osta and Rose couldn't agree on a strategy for how to play Monica in the final. Rose wanted her to attack, but Osta (knowing that Monica had been suffering from a nasty cold) wanted Arantxa to play more of an attritional game to test Monica's stamina. Perhaps the confusion explained some of Arantxa's error strewn performance in the final. I suspect nerves also played a part, and the fact that the final was so delayed couldn't have helped either. The men's semi final between Chang and Edberg had gone on for 5 hours, and Arantxa and Monica were brought on to court while Michael Chang was still putting his stuff away in his bag. It was hours after the final had been due to start and Monica handled the delay a lot better. It underlines though how bad the old 'Super Saturday' scheduling was at the US Open.

      She spent the time preparing on the last surface she had a chance to win on - grass. 5-8 of top ten women had Martina’s number on clay by 1992. On grass Martina was capable of beating everyone but graf. Winning in 1990 graf lost early and Martina won. 1994, graf didn’t make it and Martina made the final.

    Arantxa was a bit arrogant in her semifinal win on court interview, stating that she always beats MaryJoe. She did lead the head to head but MJ still knocked her out of Wimbledon the year prior and would knock her out of the French the following year and the us open in 1995. There was something about Arantxa that was abrasive and arrogant.

    • @zeddeka
      @zeddeka 4 месяца назад

      The game was so full of things like that back then. Little attempts at Psychological domination and one-up-manship. Of course Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean King were quite well known for that. As another example, and not sure if it's actually true, but Monica wrote about Manuela Maleeva saying in a press conference c. 1990 that "Monica doesn't know how to play tennis" and Monica also accused her of taking a fake injury time out in their 1990 French Open match. Monica also said that Helen Kelesi came up to her before their match at that French Open and started to trash talk her. As Tracy Austin's former coach said "The bigger the bitch they are, the better they play".

    • @moviefan4life166
      @moviefan4life166 4 месяца назад

      That makes sense. To be the best 5 in the world is quite the accomplishment and everyone is trying to beat you so I suppose you need to have thick skin and be a bit cocky. I remember watching Steffi commentate when Gaby beat Arantxa at the Open in 89 I think it was, and Steffi said the Spaniard was a very confident player. Maybe her confidence in herself contributed to her fight g spirit. She maxed out every last drop of her abilities whereas many others with more talent wasted it.

    i love Steffi. Martina is very arrogat and rude towards Steffi. Steffis was the most kindest and classiest tennis player of all time. Then those awful sisters came with there aggressive ghetto arrogance.

    • @mc7477
      @mc7477 5 месяцев назад

      There was no doubt the Williams sisters were arrogant, but they are great players and much better than Hingis. I'm just glad Hingis never beat Graf at a Grand Slam. Steffi deserved this win and earned it. Martina's behavior was disgraceful for a number one champion. She thought Graf was burned out and was taught a lesson. The French crowd booed her because she called Amelie Mauresmo half a man.
