Akshay Bharadwaj
Добавлен 8 дек 2015
Hi everyone! I am Akshay Bharadwaj, an early-career academic and ecologist from India. I make videos and films about:
- the science I do (with cool animals in cool places)
- logistical and administrative challenges I face (often circular) for my work and travels as an academic
I hope the content helps someone somewhere sometime, especially my fellow colleagues from the Global South. This channel is my small contribution towards increasing inclusivity in science!

Guide to settling into Switzerland as a foreign Master's/PhD student
Hi everyone! I am Akshay Bharadwaj, a first-year PhD student at the University of Neuchatel, Switzerland. Over the course of the past 6 months, I have jumped through several administrative hoops which were unnecessarily complicated. In this video, I share with you my experiences to hopefully give you an idea of what to expect throughout this process. Although the specifics of the process would likely differ based on your location and university, the broad principles (I am told) are the same. I hope to help my fellow academics from the Global South as they navigate this process.
Let's get started! Best wishes for your studies in Switzerland :)

Thanks a lot for this video. I was also admitted at Unine ! These tips will greatly help me.
I am Pakistani. I have been selected for a paid phd position at university of fribourg. Since its a paid phd will i be considered a student or an employee while applying for visa since the visa guidlines say that fir work permit a special employer letter is required. Secondly with visa will i be granted a temporary residential permit for six months as in the case of Germany
Congratulations. you'd be considered a student for your visa. Not sure about the specifics and how it relates to Germany
Thanks for Ur response. One more thing. How does a temporary accommodation works. Like do I need to give 3 months deposit even for temporary accommodation that I intend to use just for 2-3 months, following my arrival@@akshaybharadwaj
thank you so much :) very comprehensive & simplified :)
Glad it was helpful
Very great VDO. Anyways can you tell me where can I contact the CROUS support?
Is rental file completion has deadline too?

Thanks a lot :)
Thank you fior the video. One of the most detailed. Very Helpful
Thanks! Happy that I can help :)
Do you have to pay CVEC first before booking a crous?
Thank you so much for creating this tutorial. Do you need DSE to complete this? As I understand, international students are not eligible for DSE and need to wait to complementary phase (July), which is quite late.
helpful video even after 2 years.
can you suggest me a good consultant bro
I have never used one. Sorry 😅
how to complete DSE?
Do we need to have a specific amount of money in bank account for visa for a PhD student?
No, that's not needed. But to get your visa initially a balance of 2L or so would be good to show. But you'd be salaried, so they wouldn't care too much for this.
I didn't receive an SMS verification code on my phone so I couldn't complete my registration. What could be the issue?
Did u get solved with the problem
Appreciate you sharing your experience! Planning to come to ZHAW for MSc next year. Do let me know if you have any idea like acceptance rate, future prospects etc Thanks again!
Hi! Unfortunately, I'm not too familiar with that institute 😅
A real helpful video for prospective students. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Akshay! Do I need to have a Convention de Stage, or does a No Objection Certificate from my home institute and an Acceptance letter from my host institute do?
I'll be going to france this summer for an internship..It would be great if you could reply as soon as possible
Thank you so much bro for your help.
This is quite a useful video, thank you!
Glad it was helpful! Best of luck
hi Akshay I am planning to do my undergraduate degree in fashion design in paris this year my program is 1year intensive plus 3rd year of bachelor so in total of 2 year .am I eligible for charpak bachelor scholarship?
Thats cool brother. I have a question. Once I pay 7or 8 month rent to them and if unfortunately my visa will be rejected, are they refund it back to me?
Thank you!
Thanks for the informative video. Immediately I saw Ragna I liked d vid
Hello, in order to inform international students: The Crous that I applied told me that if we did not have physical guarantor they only accepted Visale which is impossible to get before receiving your visa. they did not accept other institutional guarantors. So even if I paid 100 Euros of reservation fee they do not accept my contract to sign, they reject it. So be careful! ( but it might be different for every Crous)
Great video.
Really loved the video... Thank you for this. I am currently in my semester 2 in my electrical engineering degree. What will you suggest is the best semester to apply after. I am in a tier 3 college which is under AKTU University.
Any semester is good. The more you apply, the more your chances are. And you can always try to postpone your travel dates, if you get the money.
@@akshaybharadwaj can you please change your Twitter settings so that everyone can message you....I want to talk toyou
Hello thanks so much for the video, very helpful :) how did you pay the €100 reservation fee?
Hey! There is a portal inside the CROUS website. I have shown it in the video.
I got a response from crous and im asked to pay the reservation fee but they did not ask me to upload an additional documents...Is something that happens sometimes
I'm not sure. But I'm sure the processes vary depending on the CROUS you are applying for. You can check with the manager of the CROUS, if you can find the contact online. Else, it should be okay.
Hello, I have been offered a room from Crous, I paid 100Euros for reservation. Now they want me to fill accommodation file within two weeks. They also want a guarantor but I am not eligible for Visale guarantor. I don't have my Visa yet as I am an international student, I need to submit my signed Crous contrat to Consulat first. I will stay for 1 year at this Crous residence, do you have any suggestions?
I had a similar situation. What I did (because mine was a short stay) was that I paid the full amount to CROUS for all the months I was there. So they didn't need a guarantor. But I think a year's rent is too much to give at once. Speak to a professor at your university or something, to see if something can be done. I'm not too sure. Sorry
@@akshaybharadwaj Thank you so much.
how did you handle it@@languageStudent-r7w
Hi Akshay, can you share the google doc you mention @ 14:20 ?
Hey. I'm sorry, but I don't have this anymore. The slideshow on the website should be self-explanatory 👍🏼
@@akshaybharadwaj Actually my procedure is showing a little differently. The thing is, CROUS is asking for an RIB but since I haven't come to France yet I don't have a bank account there. But I can't proceed without uploading the same. You got any ideas or something else I can upload instead?
@@naveenjohnson So for the RIB, I just got a letter from the Indian bank's branch (my home branch) under its letter head which lists out all possible details including the SWIFT code for international transfer. I didn't make an European bank account for my internship.
Thank you for this tutorial, it has really come in handy during my housing application.
I have question, Did the Crous include electricity?
Yes
Hey I've a question. If I've not paid my registration fee for the course yet. Will it affect my crous accommodation chances?
I don't know. I was there for an internship
No it doesn't because on crous they do not ask too see if u paid your Registration fee....uploading you're acceptance letter is enough
HI! since you paid the full amount of money for the period you were going to stay in france..if Crous hadn't accepted your application, would the 7 weeks paid in advance have been returned to you? Thank you
Yeah. I think it would have. But I was in touch with my CROUS manager throughout, and so I didn't think it would get rejected to begin with.
@@akshaybharadwaj do you have any email of this crous manager where maybe i can contact them too? just to be sure
@@xhejsicenaj3222 hey. It's different for different locations. I got it because the people at my CROUS got in touch with me. Just go to the CROUS website and you should be able to find some email ID. Mail it and ask for your specific location's manager.
Thank yo so much for the video. It helped a lot to understand the process. One doubt- Since I'm going for long stay student visa, and will be living in Crous for the entire duration of my course, I won't be able to opt the Visale method that you did. And as visa is required as a mandatory document to get a visale certificate, can ADH home insurance act as a guarantor? What can be an alternative to visa to get the guarantor certificate, as in my case, paying the rent for my entire duration would not be possible. Please please reply! Thanks in advance!
hi did you find any solutions?
@@languageStudent-r7w I got GarantMe as guarantor, it's valid for Crous
@@TanyaAgarwal-y5z I bought GarantMe certificate. But Crous did not accept it. Did you have the same problem?
@@languageStudent-r7w They require a visa, rest all documents have been accepted. I'm awaiting their response on the identity documents that I uploaded
@@languageStudent-r7w can you connect with me elsewhere, I might be able to help you better. To answer your question, Crous accepted my guarantee and I got garantme. Are you under the age of 31? cause Crous accepts garantme for people under the age of 31.
Hello. Is it mandatory to upload the proof of resources? If yes, how much money should we show on our bank account?
Hey akshay, can you guide how to apply student social file (DSE)
Hey. I'm sorry, but I don't remember this anymore. Whatever I knew, was in the video
thank you so much for this video! being an exchange student from third world countries is hard and the preparation envolves many processes. this helped a lot. regards from brasil
How long does it take residence to accept or decline my application for crous? It's been 5 days and still there's no feedback
Hey. I have no idea. I honestly don't remember anymore.
@@akshaybharadwaj thank you. the procedure takes so long, i just wanna give up :(

Can Erasmus students eat in crous places for 3 euro?
I'm not sure. But the food isn't good anyway. Better to cook
Thank you so much for the video! But I have a question: I'll go to Paris for an Erasmus project. Can I book an crous room as a student who's coming from abroad. You know, I'm not a student in France I'm a student of another country. Is that a problem?
Not a problem. I had an Erasmus student living at my CROUS. You can apply
@@akshaybharadwaj ty so much. bonjour ^^
@@akshaybharadwaj btw are there any possible scholarship programs for erasmus students to appy? do you have some information?
@@boorax_ no. I'm not familiar with Erasmus programs
@@akshaybharadwaj ok thank you anyways
Hey Akshay thank you so much for the video! I wanted to ask if we are supposed to block funds from our account to furnish it as proof of resources? Or a simple bank statement is enough?
Get the statement stamped by your bank. Should suffice
@@akshaybharadwaj Thanks akshay. Also, where should I contact the CROUS admins from?
Hi upon requesting for accommodation I am getting an error message in 2nd step what I can do ? error. The identifier id is missing for a query of Crous\Centrale\DomainBundle\Entity\Accommodation
Hey. I don't think this is an error with your process. It's something to do with the website malfunctioning. Best to contact the manager of the CROUS you are trying to book and explain the issue. They will be able to help you.
@@akshaybharadwaj thank you for your reply. But How I can contact the manager? Please help!
@@darshakalways339 there will be an contact email somewhere on the CROUS website. If possible, find the contact of someone at the CROUS you want to go to. I did it a year ago, and don't remember where I found this contact. But it exists somewhere.
i was following the instruction ad trying to get accommodation but i am not able to choose date between 2023 to 2024. is there any certain period of time to book an accommodation ?
Hey, in my case there were seperate tabs for each year. Do check out the webpage layout at @5:20 of the video. Perhaps 2023-24 is in another box?
hlw usman, are you going to france this summer?
can 1st year bachelor international student apply for crous?
Yes. I don't think there are want restrictions on which year you're in or your nationality. As long as you can show you are a student, it will be okay
@@akshaybharadwaj is it easy to get accepted for the crous accommodation? and when can you apply for it?
@@crystalching966 it is not an easy process by any stretch of the imagination. But it's also not impossible. Your biggest help is going to be the crous manager of where you want to go. Stay in touch via email with them. This video will also be of help
I arrived in Rennes at 23 November and looking for cheap housing near Rennes School of Business
Hi
What if my visa is rejected? Will the crous give refunds?
No. They will not. This is independent of visa
appreciate the video! it helped me a lot in my case. i did notice that for long-term stay as a student, there are many nuances. for one, depending on the location, the process might be on the website or via email. also, in my place i need to pay for electricity separately! to get the electricity connection seemed very hard but luckily edf has a helpline in english, which helped a lot!
Thanks for sharing!
