    So, no hate here, but what you described are not loop holes, you just didn't pay enough attention: 1. The Triarchy was not at the point of inmortality; they were still sane, the reason was that they were each other's ankers so they reimained somewhat stable, same as Rin, since she was bound to Kitay. The difference is described from the start when you first see Suni, who was losing control and his eyes seemed to change color due to the god trying to take over, as well as with Pipaji, who had to be killed given that she was losing control. 2. The dirigibles didn't just come; during the travel they were trying to remain hidden from them, when Jiang saved Rin at the temple he directly said to get help and she understood, so she signaled at the sky so that the dirigibles knew where they were and attacked the temple which is what happened. 3. The "wind god" did not die; he was buried under a mountain where wind couldn't get him out, but he did not die. 4. Nezha's scar is described several times as scales, it's even mentioned to have a blue hue to it; it doesn't heal because it's a mark of the dragon. 5. Nezha was described to survive weird stuff from the begining; the first time is when the school is attacked, it didn't came out of nothing.

    I expected everything you did!! I didn't even know it was a thriller, and I did NOT expect the supernatural aspect at all! I actually try to avoid any kind of books, movies or, tv shows that involve ghost or demons because they make me paranoid and afraid to be in my own house. But THIS was so well written! The emotional aspects of it kinda distracted me from being scared by the ghosty stuff. It was a beautiful combination of romance, thrill and supernatural....makes me want to read more J.T. Geissinger books....and that Dante book that was referenced in "Pen Pal" because, that sounds like it's interesting🙂

    Just finished book two and I just can't help but to think that the author just really wanted to make "alternate history" rather than "fantasy". I think one of my biggest complaints is how the book seems to hype up Runin (the power of the phoneix, the fire, the most dangerous weapon, etc) and probably 75% of the time she's taken out by drugs and wet towels.

    I just finished this book and disliked it sooooooo much. I can't believe how many good reviews it got. I am glad to see someone else out there didn't really like it. It makes me feel less crazy. To me it felt like every conflict presented in the book would have been resolved within a few pages if the characters just talked it out instead of going to sundial. It made me mad that I had to read all of those flashbacks and weird journal entries to understand a conflict that could have just been resolved through talking it out (or by going to therapy, as you mentioned). I bought Last House on Needless Street and Sundial together and now I am not even sure if I want to start Last House on Needless Street.

    I’m not reading anymore RF Kuang after this. It seems like she wanted to shove her views of “white people, colonialism bad” down our throats, as opposed to making us come to those conclusions ourselves based in the events of the story. Letty was such a forced character too. I was really disappointed

    I understand your opinion, and while there are issues with the pacing (especially in the last book) I really liked the books. The magic system is very well explained and for me there were no obvious plot holes. For instance, because every god has an element they do present in a different way. Nazha's connection to his god gave him regenerative abilities and control over water (in Chinese culture, water and rivers are often seen as healing). While Rin or Altan, we're connected to the phenix who symbolizes destruction and rebirth, thus giving them strength and the ability to produce fire. But either of these people (including the trifecta) have not lost control to their gods. It is clearly established that anchoring yourself through another prevents you from ever losing control. And anchoring between 3 shamans is dangerous but if it succeeds it makes them almost immortal, as it makes them exponentially more powerful, giving them a lot more control and making them extremely hard to kill. This is what the Trifecta did, but non of them lost control to the god they were channeling, thus never lost their mind and became immortal. Feylen on the other hand in the second and third book is completely lost to the god of wind. It is said multiple times that the man is still there just cannot control his body and is forced to witness how the god destroys the world through his body. Of course I cannot explain all the things that you list as plot-holes in a RUclips comment, but I think if you read the text charitably you can find the details. I don't think it is a perfect series/books but it is a very good start for a very young author.

    The Poppy War trilogy was a huge disappointment, so I'm not really surprised that Babel is the same. Kuang just seems so...overrated to be honest, and she seems to find it incredibly hard to bring characters to life. She sacrifices everything for the sake of plot, and it's so tiring. Like, just write a historical book then!

    I’m in the second book and I’m honestly considering not even reading the third one. The books are…okay, but that’s it. The narration over-explains everything and it makes it hard for me to empathize with any of the characters. Most of the time I’m reading I’m not moved, just mildly entertained at best. People say “OMG IT’S SO DARK” and yeah it is, because it’s based on real world history, but that doesn’t automatically make it a good story. Things kinda just happen and we never really get deeper into any of it so it just feels like someone is telling you a bunch of events in sequence, not really a story.

  • @dant7677
    @dant7677 2 месяца назад

    Babel turned me off from Kuang, too, just like you say. I didn't like anyone in the story, but I was talking myself into enjoying the setting and premise well enough. I could see the commentary about colonialism; even though I didn't see anything particularly distinctive about the portrayal, still there's good in showing it to readers who might not have realized colonialism's pervasiveness. There was a lot of potential for things to happen, like maybe some double-crosses... and then suddenly we'd fast-forwarded to "everyone" being dead. I remembered a similar shock from the Poppy War stories, and it seems like this is just what happens to her characters when she decides she's finished with exploring her own story's world. If she's not interested in playing out the sequence of her own plots, characters, and worlds, then why should I be interested either?

I can understand why some people may have enjoyed the reading experience or what not but its really not groundbreaking nor profound ideas it was preachy annoying and the most boring flat characters of all time. My biggest gripe though is people who like it saying that the prose is amazing and it is so well written. This book was so poorly written to me like it was not well written at all sounded like a ya novel idk wtf people r on about. And i really expected to like it too considering dark achedima is my favourite genre and the secret history is my favourite book (and that one is what actual good prose sounds like 😭)

    Of course I have read this series. Sadly, I do not have the same copies with the covers you have, but rather the ones designed after The Hunger Games came out. It even has "Author of The Hunger Games" on it. Also, on page 97, the funniest typo I have ever seen makes me laugh every time. "For where? Where are we gong?" Now, you can't tell me that is not hilarious.

    I checked it out of my library and tried the first chapter, to me it read like a dry history book and that was fine. thought it was well written, but not enough to convince me to continue. And from the sounds of it, I would have hated it because plot and worldbuilding are important to me.

    I just finished this book and omggg!! I agree on everything you said just on the part towards the end on the boat Micheal said to Aidan if he can’t have Kayla then he can’t either … I don’t remember reading anything about the government??

      So someone told me there are 2 versions of the book, I guess the author wrote 2 different endings so it depends on the one you pick up. I just got the Kindle unlimited one and maybe that one changed since I read it. But I'm so glad you enjoyed this book! It was quite the experience 😆

      @@LolasLalaland I just finished the audiobook last night- in the version I read, he didn't have schizophrenia, but he was a narcissist who had been abusive for a while and was cheating on Kayla. There wasn't a paranoia around the pregnancy, he was just violent, and when he held Aiden and Kayla at gunpoint, it was 100% from a possessive stalker mentality, not mental illness. I also don't remember her ever hearing voices during the haunting, but she did hear evil laughter, which was what Michael did as he drowned her. She did hear footsteps and doors opening and closing, though, which just ended up being the new family that moved in. Oh, and the man in the trench coat that she thought might be the ghost or some stalker was a memory of Michael stalking her after she left him (she had to get a restraining order). Once Kayla accepts her death and joins Aiden, they go haunt Michael in prison and we get the record of Michael's psychiatric evaluation where the psychiatrist believes Michael is making up having a sudden hallucination after consistently presenting with narcissism but otherwise the mental capacity to stand trial.

    Her abusive marriage? She could have gone to jail for the door hand incident. She's the abuser.
