Rural Ireland Exploration: Ballyoughtera Church and Graveyard Ruins (Castlemartyr, Co. Cork)
Hello again!
I happened upon this site while I was on holidays in Cork, and said I had to share it. Apologies for the shaky camera, this was recorded on my phone as I did not have my trusty GoPro with me.
Ballyoughtera Church was the parish church for the local area, and has been dated back to 1549. The area was described by Samuel Lewis in his 1837 study "A Topographical Dictionary of Ireland" as a "parish in the barony of Imokilly... and contained within it the market and post - town of Castlemartyr" Lewis also states in his study on the area that the Church was destroyed during the war of 1641, also known as the Irish Rebellion of 1641, where Irish Catholics rose up against the Kingdom ...
