Lei Shitai was born in 1946 into a martial arts family. He was taught by his grandfather Lei Shimo (a disciple of Sun Lutang) since he was young. After his grandfather passed away in 1964, he studied under Sun Jianyun. Following the Sun family's principle of "combining boxing with Taoism", he practiced boxing for 60 years and mastered its subtleties. In his early years, he practiced boxing for his own amusement and did not like to show it to others. In his later years, he felt that martial arts were declining, so he left the mountains to teach. His disciples spread across Beijing, Hebei, Shandong, Jiangsu and several European countries. Since 1983, he has served as a director of the Beijing Wushu Association, a standing committee member of the Beijing Xingyiquan Research Association, and deputy secretary-general of the Beijing Sun-style Taijiquan Research Association.
