Well admittedly you shine a light inside to see if the crack needed repair AFTER you put the fret board and bridge back on. I still would have put the sander to it while the you had the fret board and bridge off. Heck I would have sanded it even if it didnt have cracks. If "preparing for Maine winter" you meant stacking the wood, you should have had that done in May. Why does everyone in Maine wait till the fall to cut and stack wood? Seems kinda late for chalking windows etc. The only kind of winterizing I did in October was add more blankets to the bed, swap out short sleeves in the dresser with long sleeves, tune up the truck, check antifreeze strength, tune up the snowblower and stocking up the bathroom with tissues and cold medicine....thats about it. ☃❄🤧

I'm sorry to hear about your brother-in-law. My grandfather died earlier this year from cancer. When we went to his apartment, I found the guitar I gave him like 15 years ago when I moved out of his place. He let it go to shit, haha. The bridge was nearly lifted right off the soundboard, a gigantic crack in the back. It's just a cheap laminate guitar but it's currently in my closet. I'll never throw it out. I may hang it on the wall at some point. Instruments are imbued with the spirit of everyone who played them. And since he never cleaned it, I probably have enough DNA to clone him when the technology arises.

My first neck pulling jigs were made from old payphone signs. I made fretting bucks from those same payphone signs. It was so easy to steal those signs. They all had keyhole mounts, so gone in 10 seconds with a flat blade screwdriver. They are all the same size, same shape, same gauge aluminum made to AT&T's Kearny Specs. Those signs are bigger than they look. I'd have to swipe them in the wintertime, so I could wrap my coat around them and get them home on my bicycle. They make really great fretting bucks!

you could use a plumbers magnetic protractor with a digital display and homemade special base to place it on the neck. In ancient Japan, the folks wore special shoes call geta sandals. It had two or more projection underneath to lift the feet completely off the ground to avoid the mud or snow. Such a structure would be needed to slip in between the strings while sitting upon the fret board. however, the simplicity & ease of your device seems better.
