Frebelle II Motor Yacht, Trip from Ostend to West Mersea in Essex C1932, F981
Some 9,5mm amateur film from 1932 I think showing the MV Frebelle II taking a trip from Ostend to her home moorings at West Mersea Essex. This Motor Vessel was 60ft and 44 grt. She was built and launched by J. N. Miller of Fife in 1928. The owner at this time, Mr Herbert J. Hines (possibly of Aldham Essex), acquire the Yacht in 1932 and was no longer the keeper by 1938.
Interestingly all three Frebelle's we made at the same builders, with the third going on to be Sir Malcolm Campbells vessel, and went on to distinguish itself at Dunkirk.
This is frame by frame digitised from the original film (not in brilliant condition). The original film-maker is not known.

P & O, TSS/RMS Strathaird off the Morocco Coast C1934, F973
Просмотров 163Месяц назад
A short amateur 16mm film showing the then RMS Strathaird when she was off the coast of Morocco (not sure which port). This has some interior shots, but this sort of filming was a very hard thing for the amateur to do in the 1930s. So these shots are slow and grainy, and the lighting would probably use the power of at least one of her turbines to run! The Strathaird (GRT 22,284) first sailed in...
The SS Canberra Cruise Ship with Sarah Kennedy C1980s, 1990s F966
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.Месяц назад
A P&O promo for the SS Canberra filmed some time around 1990 I guess. It is hard to find much out about this film, but essentially Sarah Kennedy becomes a convert to cruising after P&O engaged her services....mind you it is an interesting and no doubt fair account of the experience of people on a holiday of a lifetime (in many cases). I have had to shorten this from 18mins, to under 15mins to p...
The SS Cathay P&O Passenger Liner at Singapore 1935, F964
Просмотров 422 месяца назад
A short amateur 16mm film of the SS Cathay in and around Singapore in 1935. This ship was launched in 1925 with a GRT of about 15,121 and initially sailed under P&O on the Australia route, but later served other destinations. Here she is apparently on P&O's Far East route at Singapore. After service with the Admiralty she was lost in November 1942 to a German bomber. This is digitised frame by ...
RMMV Athlone Castle Ship, Departs Cape Town 1952, Union-Castle Line, 1950s F962

Some 16mm Kodachrome footage showing the RMMV Athlone Castle departing Cape Town probably destined for Southampton late 1952. She sailed from 1936-1965, for the Union-Castle Line (barring Wartime service). According to Wikipedia she was of 25,564 GRT and carried 246 first class, and 538 cabin class passengers. A fine looking ship! This is amateur footage and as is often the case has only daylig...
RMS Adriatic and the SS Montcalm at Liverpool Docks C1934, White Star Line, F957 b

A short film from about 1934 showing what I think is the RMS Adriatic laid up at Liverpool docks prior to scrapping in Japan. This is followed by what I think is the SS Montcalm (or possibly her sister Montclare) at the same docks. Other ships and sights follow. Pretty rare original 16mm film footage taken by an amateur at the time, which may show the Adriatic's last days with White Star Line. ...
The Coronado II ferry, San Diego Late 1940s, F938b

Some colour footage from the late 1940s, of the Ferry which plied the waters of San Diego, the "Coronado". She was built in 1929 and of 502 GRT. She was sold in 1973, and her ruins could be seen recently on a beach at Cosiguina in Nicaragua. If I am honest, I am not sure if the ferry that passes is the Coronado or her near sister ship the San Diego...but this is viewed from one or the other. Th...

The Algiers or Canal St Ferry Crossing the Mississippi at New Orleans 1948, 1940s F930b

Some superb and rare amateur 16mm colour film showing the Algiers Ferry crossing the Mississippi in 1948. At the time this ferry was still a significant means of crossing the river despite the building of the Huey P. Long bridge a few years earlier. This was digitised frame by frame at a resolution of 2048X1152, from the original Kodachrome 16mm film stock. Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com), Titl...

The President was a side paddle steamer shown here going up the Mississippi at New Orleans in the late 1940s. Originally called the Cincinnati and built in 1924, she was renamed the SS President in 1929 and employed as a pleasure/excursion vessel...moving to New Orleans in 1941. With her large ballroom she became a famous night spot for the city. After a slow decline she was dismantled in 2009,...

A short film showing a trip around what I think is the port/harbour of Copenhagen or there about, in around 1950, passing the following ships: The Hammershus, the Kina, and the Thorshovdi. The 16mm film of Copenhagen had stage one vinegar syndrome so has been recorded before being disposed of. Bensound License code: BVIKAFJHREYUNH0N
The launch of the Majestic in 1967 at Glasgow Yard no 695, F873

The launch of the Majestic cargo ship in 1967, built be Alexander Stephen & Co Ltd, Linthouse, Glasgow. Yard no. 695. The ship was classed as a Reefer, with a GRT of 10,258 at registration. She was later registered as the N.Z.AORANGI (1974) and the MYKONOS (1978). She was scrapped at Alang in India in 1995. A simple example of how we once built ships. Music Bensounds.com: Happiness
HMS Inglesham Minesweeper, 1959, Naval Mine-Sweeper, F817

Some rare amatuer 9.5mm footage of the HMS Inglesham Minesweeper in 1959. This shows the ship and crew somewhere in England. Quite a few of these Ham class in-shore/estuary minesweepers were made, but I understand their service use was somewhat limted.
Just saw another video about this ship being scraped. This must be early video or film. Very nice size ship, don’t like the monsters they have today.
Love the ship. Aussie Bob. ❤
What an amazing piece of film. Thank you for restoring this. Some of the crew would have been Mersea people and we are hoping to come up with some names. Ron Green thinks the man with the braces at 0m 24s is Bill Green who had been a coasting barge master and then went on to crewing yachts. 02m 18s Frebelle II is moored at Victory Dock, West Mersea with Coast Road in the background. 02m 33s Victory Hotel West Mersea 02m 40s taken on board MOLLIETTE which was moored at the end of Victory Dock. She was a concrete coaster which had become a houseboat, Yacht Club and then a social club with an interesting reputation.
Hi, thank you very much for this additional information, which is really interesting.
Flying a paying-off pennant. I was on HMS Aveley a Ley Class minehunter, similar and real sea time.
No mobile phones, no internet and no container ships back then, the grand old days!
Nice video, thanks for taking the time to preserve a record of times gone by.
And thankyou for the thoughtful and kind comment...fortunately I seem to enjoy the process of making these videos for its own sake!
The 5th subscriber. Great find. Thank you.
Thanks for the sub.
I subscribed. Great video 💯💯💯
My post disappeared...anyway, thanks for the comment and sub.
