Gypsy Jazz Hangouts Episode 2 - Filippo Dall'Asta
Thoroughly nice chap and an absolute gent, he set my 2004 fender deluxe cyclone up last week. Came very highly recommended from Dave Simpson and I've got to say the mans done a wonderful job. Proper nice down to earth bloke had a nice chat before i left.
Every guitarist has stolen something from Django. But whatever they stole they never played it as good as Django
Good stuff!
Modern guitar playing owes its existence to him - regardless of genre. Rock and Metal music as we know it would NOT exist today if not for his two-fingered innovations. 😎🤘💪🍻
Merry Christmas 2023 and Happy New Year 2024 to all from Joe Nania
Django the original shredder!!
people who name dropped Django Reinhardt
I just came across this channel and I really like how you explain in detail through the chords it really helps me figure it out i immediately subscribed, keep posting this type of videos, this is great!
Django is a gem.....a gift to Humanity... great as a musician and as a human being... he fought during the WW2, despite that he was in England, safe and had a great deal with Lou Gramm the no1 music industry manager back then. He told everyone that he could not live a joyfull life while humans suffer and he joined the Partisans. anyway... Django is our spiritual father.. even Yngwie Malmsteen emulates some of Django's runs on the guitar.
No. He was touring in England when war broke out but returned to Paris as soon as he heard the news and played at La Cigale near Monmartre throughout the war. Amazingly he survived even though Germans based in Paris went to see him play.
The term genius is thrown around much too readily these days but Django really was a genius
Mike's a friend...great writer!!!
Awsome! As far as I know in sweet ald lowdown it's howard alden on guitar
Thanks. Love this shit
Martin Taylor UKs premier jazz guitarist made CDs with Stephane Grapelli Djangos violinist playing Manouche music!
Hank Marvin of The Shadows fame was not only inspired by Django but now has a Django group and CD's out
What’s the name of the second tune you played? Couldn’t hear the name.
How come I missed these recordings! This is a great little documentary/interview. Really enjoyed this.
Remi, great swinging man👍💣 Quality over quantity.
great stuff, more!
Merci beaucoup pour cette belle leçon!
Thanks for breaking this down. Look forward to your next video. Cheers.
This was such a great episode. With the grip you recommend, is it just tighter, or are there some nuances we should know about?
You listed one person that has any perceptible influence by Django, and left out the big one - Steve Howe from Yes.
yeah!!!
Stellar playing and easy to follow along. Thank you for the concise lesson, Cornelius. But I must correct you on one detail. Mafia (full title: The City Of Lost Heaven) is a golden age PC game from 2002. It just received comparatively lacking ports to the Playstation 2 and Xbox , which mostly was due to those being an afterthought and the console's hardware limitations of the time. The later Radio Sessions and Django On The Radio versions are also great, but this 1943 recording is what appears in the game. Sorry, not sorry for infodumping ;) Take care, Nik
This man is different to every guitarist He was so full of music you can feel it flowing through his body and out of his guitar there,s been no one like him
DJANGO REINHARDT is in a class by himself - - HE created a new form of music - - Within what was called Jazz HE actually began a whole new sound - - If Django and the Quintette came here in the United States in the mid 1930s - HE would have changed the landscape of JAZZ - but World War 2 got in the way -
@@hollywoodjoe123 I agree with you he set the guitar playing bar so high that 70 years after his death guitarists are struggling to get anywhere near him
And with mainly only 2 fingers - - it is incredible that HE Django Reinhardt actually did it ! I mean Jeff Beck said it best - - " Django was super human " - ! @@davidwalker5054
Great content, thank you! Btw, what make is this guitar? P.S.: ok, found the answer in another video, JWC prima jazz!
Bless you

Thx for this. Ultrafuax was great stuff. It had that Caravan vibe. Gonna check this out. I commented about this in another video cause I was REALLY into Yngwie growing up, and if you listen to his lines/phrasing, arpeggios, he HAD to be influenced by Django? Also, his songs could be played as gypsy style Waltz's, like Far Beyond the Sun for instance. In regard to licks, I'm new to Gypsy Jazz, it will only be 3 yrs soon. In the beginning I HAD to learn the Waltz's, and the top players licks, to speak the language. in regard to improv, I have always gone through the tune in slow motion, with NO backing track. I immerse myself in the tune, listening to different soloists, coming up with my own ideas. When I feel I have a good grasp on the changes and I'm confident that I can TRULY improvise freely, and NOT do what you guys mentioned - which is using ripped off, or lines you've memorized for certain changes, and only then do I add the backing tracks. Some backing tracks are horrendous. Gypsy Jazz can NOT be improved over in a scale mindset, it just will not work, and for me learning those complicated lines as an exercise, note for note, was SO time consuming but REALLY helped me and the fact COVID was around gave me the time. Great shows!!! I really liked ULTRAFAUX
You mentioned Yngwie Malmsteen, who I LOVED as a kid, and I've been thinking about his songs and the relationship to Gypsy Jazz. He had to have been influenced by Django, and also, listen to his songs." Far beyond the Sun " could be played as a Waltz. His lines also could fit right into the phrasing ( somewhat ). I LOVE these hangouts. Good show.
Loved that.Nice insight into the gypsy scene. Beautifully played ‘In A sentimental mood’ at the 55th mark. Exquisite, all 9 mins of it.
Mister Robinson is a great musician he like this with him heart
Nice interview and great playing. Thanks !
Another great interview it looks like. I have Ians book, its paperback, with hand drawn diagrams that were hard to follow, so I never really did. I got that book in like Y2K at my local music store.
This was great. Regarding recording back then, the Mafia controlled the Union, recording, publishing etc, and reps would literally come into the clubs studios, etc. I have two of Michales books also.
Wow, until met Tommy I thought I was the only one into Gypsy Jazz that lived an Occult life? Great interview, that I NEVER expected. We are Spirts caught in the law of cause taking effect. Corneilus you are great speaker/orator and would make a great Lawyer, and ARE a great Salesman, and player/host. I will add, the space between atoms, is the creation/Godsource, the space between the poles.... same thing? " I have crossed between the poles, for me there's no mystery Once a man, like the sea I raged Once a woman, like the earth I gave. But there is in fact more earth than sea." - Genesis Cinema show.
Good effort. Thanks.
I LOVED this interview. Robin is a FANTASTIC player and educator. I've learned so much from him about Gypsy jazz. And WOW! I never heard the George Harrison story.
This was a great show. Thanks for this.
Phenomenal stuff
good effort - great work. Love it. Thanks. Hope this project interviewing GJ players flourishes. And all the best with your GJ playing too.
Super interesting! Thank you!
23:10 wow Remi that riff was insane lol! Love Remi he’s top notch!
Awesome episode!
Thisnis great thanks for this
the ***basterdized harmonic minor noodling*** killed me xD. Still awesome all the same.
love it
Cracking video this. Great chat and superb music. Be sure to listen with proper headphones on. Alex's guitars seem excellent and he's a lovely player too!
