WolfHaus Motorwerks
Канада
Добавлен 18 фев 2018
WolfHaus Motorwerks was started by your host Jeff as a passion project to help keep classic Volkswagens on the road.
Sharing the experience acquired maintaining, repairing and customizing Volkswagen and Audi cars for over three decades, WolfHaus Motorwerks brings you videos, and builds that can help explain some of the finer points in classic VW repair, customization and restoration.
These classics were sold as inexpensive basic transportation, and as such many of them have been neglected over the years.
By applying a few basic principles, almost anyone can learn to maintain and repair their classic VW properly, and even undo some of the more “questionable” repairs that may have been done over the years.
All it takes to start is some basic tools, a little time, patience and attention to detail… Oh and maybe a few of our helpful videos!

Replacing The Steering Coupler On A Classic Beetle
In this video I replace the original steering damper held on with rivets. If yours has already been replaced in the past then you will likely have nuts and bolts which will make this job much easier.
It is important to check the condition of your steering coupler from time to time. Look for any visible cracking or loose bolts, sleeves, etc.. It's a simple part that can have disastrous consequences if neglected and fails.
I don't use the urethane couples since I see no added benefit. The original German rubber couplers also have an internal mesh core that makes them stronger and more reliable than the urethane ones in my opinion.

Classic VW Beetle / Ghia Single Port Manifold Heat riser Cleaning
Просмотров 3,2 тыс.2 года назад
In this video I show you how I clean the heat risers on a typical single port air cooled engine. The heat riser pipes typically get clogged up over time with carbon and prevents the proper function of the heat riser. In colder conditions this can cause the engine to run poorly since the fuel coming out of the carburetor is too cold. The heat riser is there to bring exhaust heat to the manifold ...

How Much Throw Does Our Custom VW Beetle Short Shifter Have?
Просмотров 3,4 тыс.3 года назад
In this video we show the throw reduction (about 70%) that we have with our new RUNNER short shifter. It reduced the throw a lot and works very well so far. There seems to be a few different manufacturers making a similar product. This is not a sponsored video. Thanks for watching!
How To Lower your Classic VW Beetle With an IRS Rear Suspension!
Просмотров 23 тыс.3 года назад
In this video we show you the process to lower the rear of a classic beetle equipped with an independent rear suspension (IRS). You can do this with basic hand tools and at very little cost. Results may vary depending on how many splines you move and also the condition and type of shocks you have. Final shots of the car footage were lost, bummer! The VW Beetle in this video is a 1970 Classic Be...
Do you have a source on the rubber that goes around the glass with the lip on one side, and the thicker rubber that goes around all of that?
I have no real source for any rubber in the gauge assembly. I know cip sells a seal but I don’t think it’s the one you are asking about. You may need to get creative or use a broken speedo for parts.
@@WolfHausMotorwerks That's what I figured. I ordered the same thing from Wolfsberg West. I'll just find a sheet and cut one, maybe use gasket material. Thanks for the reply.
Great job. Please, can you tell me the scale (ohms) of the fuel gauge float of this speedometer?
Did you use all crimps? No soldering?
Thanks for the question. I try to crimp original style connectors as much as possible. Also I try to avoid joining wires when possible I prefer an uninterrupted wire from one end to another unless there is a factory split etc. There is a bunch of debate between soldering or crimping, both have + -. Use the method you are best at, and that will last. Clean wiring, avoid multiple joints on one line, heat shrink etc will help you have reliable wiring. Hope this helps!
@@WolfHausMotorwerks thanks
What steering wheel is that?
That is a Brazilian made wheel. The brand name is JayMatt.
Awesome tutorial and upgrade advice, on the Speedo.
Thanks!
what way did you spin the driil 🤔
If I am not mistaken it spins counter clockwise.
we’re can i get one for my 1962 bug
The one I got was from Brazil, there are a few guys on FB selling similar ones. Here is an example, I HAVE NO CONNECTION TO THIS SELLER. facebook.com/share/p/JjYSMrC7LEDRDbW9/?mibextid=WC7FNe
great video
Thanks!
Great video. What do the Roman numerals I, II and III indicate?
Thanks! As far as I’ve ever heard, they are shift points, meaning that is where they recomend shifting into the next gear in normal conditions.
The video helped alot and I put in the LED light but did it in blue.Looks awesome thank you
That’s great! I’m glad I helped, I’m sure it looks neat in blue👍.
VEry helpful, thanks!
Thanks!
Great Video, Crazy question, why is the switch screwed into the transmission?
Why is the reverse switch screwed in the transmission? Many older cars (and I’m sure some new ones too), did this. It’s an easy way to have a reliable mechanism to trigger the lights when the gearbox is in reverse. Basically it’s a pin switch that gets pushed in by an arm in the gearbox. Otherwise it would need to be outside connected to the shift lever somehow which would likely cause it to be less reliable in my opinion.
thats badass! great work & video 👍👍
Thanks!
Well done, thank you!
Thanks!👍
😊 cheers for this I’m currently having hesitation and oddly some gas or oil coming out the inlet manifold
Needed to see just how much of the torsion bar sticks out and I wanted to see the plate slip on the torsion bar. Waste of time on this video.
Hey Flytym! Sorry to hear that you didn’t get value from the video, however those points in my opinion are not really key points to what the video is intended to show. Not sure why you would need to see how much the torsion var sticks out, and as for the plate slipping on, it’s just that, it slips on. The video is to show the concept and give an idea of the steps involved. Also the torsion bar layout changes in some years. Years where you have an extended tube on the spring plate you cannot see the torsion bar end etc. Hope you find the info you need, good luck with the project! 👍👍
Excellent video! Able to trace the problem to the wire that runs to the fuse behind the engine fan. It looked like mice had chewed through it. Thanks!
That’s great! Notvtye mice 😂, but the fact you found the issue👍. Glad it helped! Thanks for the comment!
Little lengthy but very clear,, Thank you
Great video that is extremely informative. New subscriber.
Awesome! Glad it helped! Thanks 👍
Would you be willing to rebuild my 74 super beetle speedometer?
Thank you from Holland. My Mexico beetle meter is almost the same. He is up and running again.
That’s great!!! I’m glad it helped!!👍👍
Thank you!
👍👍🙌
radical. thank you sir.
Thanks!!👍👍
This is the one I needed. Thanks!
Right on!👍👍
My understanding is the exhaust gases flow from left to right of the heat riser so it will heat up on the left first, not how you described it?
On original units the hole on one side is smaller than the other to cause a directional flow as I understand it. However the point of tte vidéo is not the direction of the flow but rather the fact that they clog up and then have no heat to the carb area, and how I try to clean them out. Regardless of direction no heat is no heat and blockage is blockage.
Where can I find parts ?
I mostly use old speedos for parts etc. I’m not aware of any suppliers.
Same Rubber coupling was fitted to the commercial Dodge 50 series (Only built in the UK between 1979 and 1993) vehicles from 3.5 ton to 7.5 ton range, vans, chassis cabs, buses even 4x4 models and to tipper trucks. slightly different coupling but also riveted in and have to be drilled out like yours.
Cool! Thanks for that info!
informative video but the guys hands go out of shot way too much kinda frustrating!
Thanks for the feedback Not always easy to film properly and get things done at the same time. 👍👍
Dope bro thanks 🫡💯👑shouts from England 🇬🇧
Thanks man!!👍👍
Seriously clean and looks amazing. Great job. I'm envious...my '69 Ghia's rats nest is something I have wanted to clean up, but just haven't gotten the motivation to get around to it yet. This is inspirational. Thanks!
Thanks for the kind words! All I can say is take lots of pictures and notes as they can help safe time etc. Try and ve sure you clean as much as you can and limit the number of joints a single line has. Good luck!
Is this still available and if so where?
I got mine from Brazil it is made under the Runner name. You can also find it under the name bug tec. I don't have a particular seller to refer you sorry.
Excellent explanation. I could understand it because of the way you explained it! Now I know what all those wires are (some connected, some not) in and around my reverse switch. Now I am 100% sure I can figure it out. Thanks for the tip it is positive switching and not switching the ground wire. That helped my brain.
Awesome! Glad it helped, thanks for the feedback!
@@WolfHausMotorwerks OK, now where do I get my "The Beatles" sticker?
LED link? Is this a service I can pay you to provide on my '73 Standard Type 1 Bug? I don't need the Odo reset, just everything else. Thank you for this excellent guide!
You can DM me at wolfhausmotorwerks@gmail.com
Is it possible to buy the piece that the speedometer cable goes into? My old speedo cable rusted into that pin/gear. I finally got the cable off but a piece of the cable is still stuck in there so I cant get another cable in there far enough to turn the gear 100% of time but will work sometime. I want to take the speedo apart and replace that piece, I might even be able to remove the broken piece with it apart but didn't want to risk not having the piece before starting this. This is for a 74 Acapulco Thing.
Second question if I do have to buy a used speedometer for this, is that gear pretty standard for these speedos that have the separate fuel gauge?
I'm not aware of many or any spare parts other than a gear for super beetle speedos. I usually source used units to pick parts from.
Ideally I usually get as close to identical unit to swap parts from.
Also I do like the led lights. Do you have the product info on the lights all the ones I find are about 1/2in wide and I think that’s to wide. Thanks
Ppl like me use videos like yours when we run into problems. Like I did rebuilding my speedometer. The two toughest parts were resetting the miles and putting the back of the speedometer back on. Lining up the tiny little wire in the tiny little hole. Your video was very informative until you skipped showing the two hardest parts and cut away only to return with the part fixed but didn’t show how to fix it. Other than that it was okay. On another note I believe people like me don’t necessarily go looking for these videos unless we run into problems with something we are doing. If I find the video that helps fix my problems I mostly skip past all the BS ppl say and do to make their videos fancy and go right to the meat of my problems. Thanks for making them they help most of the time.
Most of your videos are helpful, but it be really nice if you would show the difficult parts instead of cutting away and then just showing them done back up so in my opinion, your video isn’t very damn helpful
So is it just this video? What exactly is the info you need more clarification on? I had feedback that my videos were too long and drawn out.🤷♂️
What are the light bulbs u used I can't find the model name of the exact bulb model number online
The Led strip I use is similar to this DC 12V Waterproof 1Ft 15 LED Strip Underbody Light with 6 inches Wires for Motor (White,Pack of 6) a.co/d/5ArgD3r I hope this helps👍
Thanks. You made a very nice video that is extremely informative with plain talk and camera views. Multiple owners have each put thier curse on the electrical system and one problem by one problem is being figured out. Thanks again!
Hey thanks! I'm glad it can help. Unfortunately with these cars it's often the case. Thanks for the comment! Let me know if you have any questions.
Awesome video thanks. Now ready to rebuild mine!
Awesome👍👍
Thanks so much! I've been trying to figure out how these work on and off all day. Just followed the wiring from the gearbox through the engine bay and found a wire running to the ignition point that wasn't connected. Both reverse lights working 😃
Right on! Glad it helped. They usually should have a fuse on the ignition on wire just fyi. Glad it helped 👍👍
Great video ! Would the LED connection need a resistor ? Or just connect it ? Thanks for your time big fan keep up the great work on VW DYI . Alex NJ
Thanks for the kind words! The les strips I get are 12v so on a 12v car it's a direct connection. On a 6v car id add a converter that converts 6v to 12v you should be able to find them on Amazon or alibaba etc.
@@WolfHausMotorwerksdid you wire the LED strip to the dimmer on the dash?
The leak with the Mexican maybe was because the plate wasn't totally flat.
Rivets came with original couplers, I have a 1974.
Is it legal to run the mileage back? I thought it was.
I can't say what is legal or not in your area, however these speedometers often broke and were not accurate, easily replaced by one from another car, and at 99 999 they would go back to 0. In the video I show how to fix etc, you can also use this to put the correct milage into a replacement speedo for example.
Sorry for dumb question; How do u check the housing,? The bulb i know works, so, do i use a voltage light to check wher ot makes contact with the bulb? Thanks
Each bulb socket should have +voltage at the small tabs at the bottom of the socket. The surrounding body of the socket is the - ground to be careful not to short the socket. I usually tape up the test light and only have the first few mm of the test light tip exposed. If no voltage at the base then pull the housing apart a d see if the wires are ok. Some sockets where the bulb has 2 functions will have 2 contacts. Obviously each socket will only be live when that circuit is turned on. Hope this helps!👍 Need more info let me know👍
@@WolfHausMotorwerks ok i’ll try that. My housing has 3 sockets. Signal lights, brakes, and reverse. Only reverse doesntnwork,..for both sides. Ps, i have a 1970 semiautomatic Ghia. Thanks for the suggestion
YOU may want to keep in mi d if the wires are somewhat stock, there is an inline fuse off the coil for the reverse lights. Also you can verify the reverse switch in the gearbox as it may fail or the connectors may be off. Under the car at the nose cone you will see it on the passenger side. YOU can test it with a continuity tester, in reverse you should have the contact closed in neutral no contact. Also you can do a continuity test on the wires to see if broken. The wires to and from the reverse switch are + so be careful to not ground them out. Car does not need to be on to test continuity in the switch. Hope it helps!👍
Nice work👍
Thanks!!
Agree - have viewed many; your video was absolutely the best!
Thanks for the kind words! I have some more coming out just need to find time. I'm glad they may help👍
