My live attempt at Road to Las Vegas 2024 Battle 4
This is my live attempt at Battle #4 of Road to Las Vegas 2024.
The case is "Ship the World" by Benjamin Weber and is available here:
fmworldcup.com/product/ship-the-world-rtlv2024/
Congratulations to the winner Peter Scharl who was the only one to fully solve the case this round! Also congratulations to Jakub Pomykalski who won in the livestreamed battle and came a close 2nd overall.
Livestream of this round, including final scores: ruclips.net/video/ihnea7r7dJM/видео.html
I forgot to turn on the timer, but I basically spent the full 30 minutes so the time elapsed in this video (less 2 minutes of intro) is basically the time spent on the case.

This is my attempt at Battle #2 of Road to Las Vegas 2024. I attempted this after the actual battle, and while I tried to do it under "live" conditions, I couldn't avoid seeing some information via social media in the past week. Apologies I forgot to turn on the display overlay of my keystrokes, will try not to forget next time! The case is Sommelier by Peter Scharl and is available here: fmwor...

This is my attempt at Battle #1 of Road to Las Vegas 2024 a few days ago. I attempted this after the actual battle, but tried to do it under conditions as close as possible to what I would've had to do if it were live. Apologies this meant I didn't always explain my work in full as I don't usually talk out loud when I solve the cases! The case is Doggie Daycare by David Brown and is available h...
How I won the 2023 Microsoft Excel World Championships

This is a re-enactment of my performance in the MEWC 2023 Final last month. I solve it (roughly) the same way as I did on the day and talk through what I was thinking during each stage of the case. If you'd like to see a polished solution to the full case, check out Diarmuid Early's video: ruclips.net/video/GbqvIXhqLdQ/видео.html For more info on Excel eSports or to register for the 2024 season...
Brilliant job!❤
Hi Andrew... I've tried to solve B3 as you did but it gave me Ref!
Hey Andrew, big fan. I aspire to be just as good as you one day.
Great athlete
I kicked myself when I watched how quickly you rearranged the columns in the later levels to match the layout in the earlier ones. And a little bit again when you manually tagged which ports would need a canal in about 15 seconds! Watching your solves reminds me that I’m often too much of a purist for my own good…
That's an amazingly simple way to get my xlookups to work properly through the levels hahahah. Genius!
hahaha it was the cause of my level 7 mistake though, by tagging it all manually I also accidentally applied it to the large ships
Mind blowingly fast… and not a LAMBDA in sight!
May I know your Educational background? I am thinking if After matric I wil spend my time learning Ms excel then is it important to have strong educational background for Ms excel jobs? Or only the skill is important?
I'm an actuary. I suppose it depends on what job specifically but in general I'd say both are important
How do you create that symbol in front of the dates at 10:04?
I didn't create that, it was a special type of data object that came with the question
Congratullation 🎉🎉🎉🎉
This is nuts! Can i ask what you do for a job and how long you have been using excel for at a high level?
Thanks! I'm an actuary and use Excel a lot at work for 15 yrs
Great as usual! I really liked the model you made for level 7 with just filtering the aliens and ghost for whole map (I love it). I am just wondering about the top screen of scoring! Did you made after receiving the answer sheet or how did you get it?
Oh that scoring is not live, yeah its done after getting the answer sheet and I just overlay it there for the video so its a bit easier to follow/remember the question
I've always felt amazed by @DimEarly capacity to trigger some complex formula that easily. I'm evenly amazed by the speed you are able to trigger simple formulas (How I loved hearing your keyboard fast strokes during the video :) ) Congrats for the qualification and the win !
Congrats Andrew. Such elegance & efficiency in getting the job done without a ton of complex formulae. Add lightning fast speed (even on slow playback!) and just WOW!! I am new to FMWC and the skills in this competition blow my mind. You've inspired me to learn to use data tables properly before the next round!
Very impressive - and a totally different approach than mine! If you spliced our best bits together it would probably be under 15 ; )
An impressive speed
At the speed of light! Amazing approach, as always!
You are not from this planet 😆... you are so fast and your logic and creativity to solve the problem are outstanding. Congrats
From where can I download these worksheet and questions? I want to try these
They're available at FMWC's website, specifically fmworldcup.com/sample-cases/ Some are free, others you will need to purchase
what sorcery is a data table @19:04 & @26:00 was trying out this excel today.
can find it in Data > What-If Analysis > Data Table, sorry i'm clicking stuff underneath the banner i placed on the video
Great work. Can you do video on use of "#".
Insane!
What a time to be alive! Watching the 3x champ face a case like this is incredible. It is also incredibe the speed you navigate through everything, Andrew! After Dim (who made some LAMBDAs beforehand), you would have been first place! Congratulations!
Nice work, so fast with the keyboard shortcuts!
"Then I started looking at the scoreboard and hoping it would stay the same" I felt this to my core, glad it's the same right at the top! Thanks for sharing, great to see
What is this magical move at 19:04 ? I don't even understand how it can automaticaly go to pick the good prices at the good date knowing all the initial calculations are being done with the prices of 3 jul 23...
oh that's a data table, sorry i'm clicking the Ribbon but it's hidden behind the banner which I added to the video to keep track of the question/scores Data > What-If Analysis > Data Table, then set column input cell to the cell which you want to vary (in this case A1)
@@andrew_ngai Thank you so much ! :)
Wonderful, thank you!
Lovely I like it a lot!... Why Ctrl+Shift+W make your cells light blue! how is that? is it a shortcut you made?
Likely a macro in his Personal Macro Workbook
There is some difference from the answer sheet in Level 8, did you check that !!
yep its this, just a simple cell colour macro :)
Really good ! Quick thinking
thanks for the video!
You solved Bonus 2 and 3 so fast. I'm very impressed. Thanks for posting this! Very interesting to watch someone else's approach. I do wish you'd shown your score and reacted to it a little bit, even if you didn't go back and try to solve them again. Also, you ran into the same issues I ran into when trying to do a walkthrough of this case. On level 6, where you actually can leave the designated area. And I'm glad to see you got the same answers as I did on Level 8. The way you solved Bonus Question 5 was similar to Diarmuid Early and missed the double occurrence that appeared in one of the rounds.
Thank you! Will keep that in mind next time :) Might be an issue with the answers if we all got the same issues. Your comment on B5 is interesting though. From the question wording, I think it's not clear whether double occurrences should be treated as two separate instances, or that "3 in same cell" simply satisfies the "2 in same cell" condition. Unfortunately there'll always be some questions where it's easy for different competitors to interpret slightly differently.
Before watching this video I thought I was 4/10 in excel and now I think I am 1/10
This is the level I aspire to achieve.
Very impressive, it's crazy how quickly you adapted to the borders issue and completed the last bonus
I watched this at 2x speed, I am afraid I will need to watch it again at (at most) 1x speed...! Impressive!
I watched in 0.25 Speed to get something!
Can you video with most of formulas and keyboard shortcuts you use? I would be happy if I can learn even half of your techniques 😊
Thanks
How important is the kind of computer you are using? what keyboard is best ? I am a beginner. Could we get a Computer Setup video in future? Thanks
I don't think the type of computer is that important, Excel doesn't use a lot of resources (at least for the cases in the competitions), you probably just want any keyboard and mouse that you find comfortable and a decent size monitor
Amazing, thanks for showing this and congrats on the win
Good video thanks. Keen to see if you can make one similar about Excel Road to Vegas battle 1 (and onward). Thanks
Nice one Andrew. Congrats on the win and good luck with the RUclips career!
Congrats with the win and thank you for the video, enjoyed it!

This video helped me realise Microsoft Excel is an insane ESport!
Excellent. I hope you continue to solve these problems and teach us how to think to reach solutions Thank you very much And more success
Exciting, looking forward to watching it. It would have been interesting to see the live event - FMWC could, next time, have streams on all the finalist individually. Just a thought. Happy to learn from the best!
First 🥇 of many hopefully! It will benefit us all to have a glimpse into the mind of another Excel genius!
8:31 This might be why I will never beat you! (One of the reasons anyway 😂) Sometimes I’m too purist for my own good… there weren’t even that many of them, but I don’t think it would have even occurred to me to just do them by hand! 15:28 I should do that more often! I hope you can be persuaded to make more of these : )
Haha well you don't need to do it by hand if you have your colour macro 😂
@@andrew_ngai That was the one good investment I made in my finals prep... it didn't save me though! 😂
On this point, I always go back to Andrew's approach to the Excelopolis problem in the 2021 FMWC Open, where everybody else tried to solve it using fancy formulae and even VBA, and Andrew just solved every line of each question manually... and topped the scoreboard! Sometimes the manual approach is the best 😂
@@Tim_Heng I know exactly what you mean - it was the Share the Ride case, which was theoretically doable with circular references, but very tricky to get right. I think that round might not play out the same way today though… using circular references was a very unusual idea at the time, but it’s come up a few times since. Maybe one or two people would crack the general solution in the time today??
@@DimEarly Yes you're right, it was Share the Ride. Your memory is better than mine! I think that with recursion better understood and easier to implement with lambdas now, it might be a conceptually easier task to follow as well. I'll be honest and say that I still don't think the circular general solution is terribly intuitive, but that's why I sit on the commentator side and leave the competing to you good folks! :D
