Annnnd we're back with another installment! I did have some mic technical difficulties today that I didn't notice until after recording, so sometimes you won't hear what I'm saying. It probably wasn't super important anyway. Today's session is a song called "Borderline" by Secretariat (mtkdata.cambridgemusictechnology.co.uk/MTK007/Secretariat_Borderline_Full.zip). Hi everyone! I'm using Pro Tools today, and I'm just as upset about it as you are. But here's the story: back in the Spring of 2017 I wrote some jams with the intent of starting a band/project/thing with my drummer friend, James Lane (Lybica, A Brilliant Lie), and the studio we went to track used PT so I just continued it in PT. GAse totally unterrated by 99% of Cubase Owners! And yes, its a sampler with the GUI of a DRUM Machine. there are also different layers of sounds triggered by VELOCITY + Round Robins + FX rack inside+ and full mixing console ( which can be expanded to the outside Mixer if needed).

    Choosing M/S on the drums' room mics -- what was the reasoning?

    • @SpradingalingMixingThings
      @SpradingalingMixingThings 9 месяцев назад

      I just wanted to use the second ribbon mic, hahaha. I had done the mono kit mic with the first ribbon a while back and wanted to do it again, and I didn't have a matching pair of mics to get a true stereo setup going so M/S made the most sense to me.

      Thanks! I’ve got some ideas to push it a little further, but without redoing anything or doing some major editing this is about as good as it gets. Vocals definitely need to come up and bass needs to go down quite a bit. Maybe I should do a third stream for revisions and to finish it up?

    • @SpradingalingMixingThings
      @SpradingalingMixingThings 11 месяцев назад

      Yeah, if I were the engineer/producer on the session then I would have tried to do quite a few things differently. The guitars in particular are really dark and mushy and a DI for each would have been a huge help. It's all fine enough for what it is and we can still make it sounding pretty good with some work.

      Right?! I love learning from the big time engineers, but they’re working on stuff that has been pretty meticulously recorded in a very controlled environment. A lot of my experience is working with audio that’s been recorded with no budget by the people in the band in their home studio and then they hire me to make it listenable.

    Can someone explain some thing for me: Why is there 7 Guitar tracks? I am a rookie at this so me recording my stuff there's the usual GtrL GtrR GtrSOLOL GtrSOLOR why would I need up to 7 or more guitar tracks?

    • @SpradingalingMixingThings
      @SpradingalingMixingThings 11 месяцев назад

      It's been a while since I've looked at this session, but I believe there are two main rhythm tracks, then two more playing higher octave chords to make the main rhythm nice and thick, but also balanced in the stereo image. Then the others are more leady or accent bits that are doubled and harmonized in spots, also done for thickness and stereo balance. You don't need to do it this way - listen to A Perfect Circle's first two records or Metallica's Load in headphones and you'll hear one guitar part on the left and the other part on the right - but it's pretty common to double up and layer most everything. Thanks for watching! Alex

    • @SpradingalingMixingThings
      @SpradingalingMixingThings Год назад

      I did some reading on their site and it’s adding harmonics like RBass. It shouldn’t eat up more headroom, though, they should be roughly the same

    • @davelordy
      @davelordy 11 месяцев назад

      Take original signal, low passes it at the frequency you set (80Hz is a good starting point), saturate it, then high pass the saturated signal to remove the original bass, and add that back with the original full signal - all these bass enchacers work like this.

I do run my buffer size at the highest setting to take some load off it, too. Focusrite has some Windows settings recommendations on their site to optimize your DAW for the PC. That should hopefully help a little bit. Alex

    @danepaulstewart8464 Год назад

    Well.. it’s one hell of a single plug-in! But it’s got nearly everything on it, so I suppose it should be. It may be worth pointing out that the Dynamics section on the AMEK 9098 console is actually DIGITAL. In each channel of the console the dynamic knobs are just knobs. They are controlling digital processors housed in a large external rack-mounted box. Usually mounted in the racks with the many power supply units that the console comes with. So they are extremely transparent and clean. No coloration to speak of. If you’re not looking for distinct coloration like you would expect from something like a NEVE from the 1970’s then this channel strip will do just about anything one would expect for typical channel processing. Nicely done demo too. 😎👍👍
