Hi, just discovered your channel. Having spent most of my life on the Wirral I can recall the Garden Festival in 84 (age 9). I went on a school trip from Gayton primary, then again with my late Grandmother. I'll take a look at your other stuff. Thanks for the fond recall. Whatever happened to that massive dome? I remember dancing to the birdie song in that dome with my Nan. Worzel Gummedge, the chinese garden.

A sad loss. Inevitable when the new bridge runs exactly alongside. Ours, crossing the Tees at Middlesbrough, survived because the newer crossings were a long way further upstream. We're still likely to lose it, though. It has been the subject of 'closure by stealth' ever since its centenary in 2011.

That's a good question. Its difficult to say precisely but probably the point about 1 min 20 secs in (or 1 min 40 secs in, but I think it is the first). The image was taken near to the Mothercare store, wherever that was in 1993.

I lived near Brombrough in the seventies. Us kids would call an asphalted public path between two houses to the next road " the cinderpath". I never knew or wondered why until now. But perhaps cinders were in good supply at some point during Wirral history. So they may have been used for rail footings and public paths alike. Will probably never know.

Harlow Railway station is now unfortunately completely ruined. More like eat at Joe's cafe with part of the station ticket office converted for eating you cannot walk properly along the platform with tables chairs people stuffing their guts, if that was not enough they added two Hotdog stands outside as well inside the Toilet has been converted to a unisex toilet The signal box had its windows smashed so many times they put in plastic glass Horrible place....... money money money 🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑💰💰......PS at Thurstaston you are now charged for parking your car to get fresh air ( station gone long ago )

I'd forgotten how 'tatty' the railways around Wirral had become by the early 70's. I was brought up in Port Sunlight and actually travelled to West Kirkby from Hooton and remember the old Mersey Railway Westinhouse stock!

What a lovely comparison between the two eras. As a Railwayman of 33 years I worked on that part of the system for a while and looking at some of the footage from the 1970s, the layout has hardly changed today. The Wirral way is a nice place to go for a walk on a sunny day and the chippy at Parkgate does some of the best Fish and Chips around.

This is really heartbreaking. Studying this for current Postgrad dissertation. Does anyone who lived in Walton/Norris Green area remember anything about the Venables/Thompson family? I know it was 30 years ago but someone must remember them and have some light to shed about how and why a crime like this could have taken place.

  • @leonprunelle278

I watched all the 5 videos and I have to admit that I almost cried, thinking of poor little James being beaten up and dragged during this horrific journey. It also made up my mind not to watch the film Detainment, based on the events (I watched the trailer and three extracts, and made me sick). At that time, media were questionning who, between Thompson and Venables, was the leader during this barbarity. Both were evil : Venables attracted poor James, and Thompson had the idea of killing him (they imagine pushing a child into the water or under a car !). Justice were at that time too lenient, giving them 8-year imprisonment. 15 or 20 years would have been much justified. I hope Venables will stay forever in jail, and Thompson to live with this tragedy in his mind until his death.
