we need to talk about squid game season 2...
We're so back. I know I disappeared for like 6 months without any new uploads but I wanted to get this video out before the new year. I'm working on a recap of my favorite movies of 2024 so this video will do in the meantime.

How Streaming Services Are Killing Movie Theaters

Releases have been a little dry recently I'm not gonna lie. Because this is kind of like the calm before the storm with all the movie and tv show releases coming this summer, I wanted to make a video essay in the meanwhile. I actually did more research than any other video essay I did so far so hopefully you can tell that I'm slowly improving at this. #streamingservices #videoessay

    I completely agree that the island searching subplot was useless. Like, it led nowhere and accomplished nothing, I'd much rather they used the time exploring character dynamics or even adding another game. The first 2 episodes were a bit dragged out in my opinion, the rock paper scissors game was great but I think they could've fitted it into a singular episode with similar results. Opinions on the cast- Thanos- I didn't like him at all- he was an awful person- I was not upset to see him go. I understand your point that he had a really unique personality and it was cool how he kept speaking in English but at the end of the day he was kind of annoying. 456- it was so sad watching him because he's so much more depressed and angry than in season 1- I really felt for him as it was clear the other contestants didn't want to be saved and that his whole mission was useless- which was also annoying, like, he should've gotten on the plane. He honestly feels like a completely different person which makes his arc sp tragic. He definitely made some questionable decisions during the season though. 001- he was a good addition- I'd love to see how he develops in season 3. It, it was a bit annoying how predictable this season became because of him- it was pretty obvious that everyone on his team would survive because of plot armour. I really hope he becomes more complex in season 3 and not just an unfeeling villain because I honestly quite liked him even when he shot 390. The subplot of subtely making 456 realise sacrifces are needed for a greater cause and realising the point of the games was pretty enjoyable too. 120- It was quite brave to include a transgender character, especially in a South Korean show, but they executed it really well- she was one of my favourite characters by the ending. Her friendship with Young Mi was quite sweet, although Young Mi is a little one dimensional in my opinion it was still really sad when she died. I almost wish more characters died instead of only 2 but I guess that's for season 3. I love her undertones of brutality- we all wanted to punch the magic lady and I generally think she could've won the 20 vs 1 fight at the end. 222- Unpopular opinion- I found her quite boring, like she didn't really do or say anything memorable and her only real personality trait was being quiet. Obviously I feel bad for her, she should definitely leave 333 and signing up for the games pregnant was a stupid idea, but her character was too simple and the only benefit she added was being a foil to 001s (dead) wife. 001s brother- WHY DIDNT YOU SAY HE WAS THE FRONT MAN. That's the only thing that needs to be said about his character. 388- he was my favourite character from when he won the dice thing up until episode 7 because he was funny and nice enough without being too annoying or simple. I didn't like his cowardice and betrayal in the final episode- especially not knowing whether he has a valid reason to act the way he did. However, this does make his character more complex and sets up a good redemption character arc for season 3. I'm also looking forward to knowing his backstory, whether he lied about being in marines or has PTSD, his abusive father etc. I think he may die in season 3 but I hope I'm wrong because I love his character regardless of episode 7 because he's generally a nice person. 390- I liked him well enough throughout the season, especially in the final episode and was sad to see him die although it was inevitable from the mingle game. It was annoyingly similar to season 1 but it still works well on its own. He was a great, solid side character and 456s only link to his past life which makes it even more tragic than he died. Honestly, 456s reaction was worse than the actual death itself. 007 and his mum-The mum was really nice- a steroeotypical mother figure to all the characters who was there for everyone, I really don't want her to die. She is one of the few nice, selfless people in the games and I bet she'll die in the 3rd season. Her son was far less admirable, especially not fighting in episode 7, but I don't hate him like some people I just don't really care whether he lives or dies. Abandoning his mum in episode 6 was kind of a dick move though, even if it was unlitmately the right choice. It's a great example of what the games psychologically do to people in order to survive. Recruiter- had a bit more screentime than necessary but the actor is so good it dosen't matter. I loved the Russian roulette game he had with 456 and admired him literally dying just to not cheat. H e didn't really feel like a person which made him even more unique and creepy than everyone else. 100- honourable mention because never have I encountered such an arrogant, unlikeable, selfish bitch than this old man. Whenever he spoke I wanted to throttle him with his own throat fat and I'd give anything to watch him suffer because my God he deserves it. I don't know why I hate him so much but he has the supreme talent of saying the worst thing at the worst time. Overall, I love this cast as much as season 1 (still miss 67 and Ali though) and I love their friendships which seem more genuine than season 1 in my opinion. They seem too wholesome to start betraying each other which will make it worse when it inevitably occurs. I would gladly watch them chill together outside of the games, like the mother was talking about and I don't want to see any of them die in the next season- even 001. I liked the music because it made it more entertaining than silence in my opinion- especially during the voting scenes. It was definitely more light hearted than season 1 which I have mixed feelings about- on one hand I had a funner time watching it and was cheering alongside the characters but leaves far less of an emotional impact than season 1. It also shows how desensitised the characters become to death and violence over only a few days. I didn't really like them humanising the guards as I preferred them as robot entities so we can focus on the player characters but that's just me and not really a big deal. I loved this season so much- especially episode 5 and 6 and I'm really excited for season 3!!!

Season 2's focus is on people's choices (leave or no leave) (hypocrisy even with good intent) (u live long enough u become the villain) i dont think everything needs to be explained. I dont need to see the backstory of these new characters. Cause in life you dont know all the ins and outs. We saw that in season 1 which was nice, but why cant season 2 offer smth different. The different is less satusfyig sometimes but thats still v creative

    I completely disagree with you on how you approached it. The point you made was that Squid Game season 2 was a money grab, which doesn't even hold any relevance narrative-wise. Gi Hyun's character arc was very strategically set up, the whole second season was supposed to represent futile desperation that eventually led to an untimely demise for two of his friends, such as the first season. While the execution could be questioned, it was very much intended for a second season. You said that season one was a good enough conclusion, but you never even addressed anything to support that; it seemed like it was just built on vibes and execution. Let me tell you, though, the execution and writing for season one were just superb; Gi Hyun letting go of possessions and earthly values that had even led him into the game to pursue a greater cause that contradicts the values of a capitalist society which he once held, but it's nowhere near a resolution. If that wasn't enough to convince you, the structure closely resembles the "Hero's Journey", the first act is the character preparing for their journey (Gi Hyun leaving the airport and ultimately everything he once valued), the character passing the point of no return and undergoing a period of transformation (Gi Hyuns change of idealogy and the death of his friend, finally cutting any ties of Gi Hyuns former life), and the character going back to their former life OR finding a life of contentment (perhaps the third season) Your second point was the inconsistent tone, and let me tell you, tone can be inconsistent. Writers usually depend on a consistent tone to attract and engage their audience if their characters are static and flat, but that is not the case for Squid Game. I wouldn't say Squid Game has an excellent cast of dynamic characters (Hyun-Ju when I catch you), but it has certainly built itself enough to cater to those tonal shifts. For example, the green light red light scene. The first season had already engaged with a Grimm altercation of red light green light through the perspectives of many characters that were already introduced and firmly established; this maximizes the thrill and suspense for the audience, and it lets us already know what purposes our accustomed characters will serve through a survival setting. However, they can't just repeat that for the second season if they want to engage with Gi Hyun dynamically, or else they would just turn the show into a Melo-thriller that would exploit our empathy to tell an engaging story. So instead, it used the repetition of green light and red light to demonstrate to us the failure of Gi-Hyun's altruism, playing more into a frustrating repetition of the first red light and green light. To further elaborate on this "tone", they played a classical ballad of some sort to fully curate on an absurd replay despite his "omniscient power" attempting to dictate the game's results. Your third point was that the second season should not have ended on a 'cliffhanger.' I understand why you may feel this way; the first season's cliffhanger was just so well executed that it already felt like a satisfying conclusion despite it not fitting into that criteria. Thus, season's two more rushed cliffhanger had engaged the audience in a way that just feels shocking and insatiable. Usually, when this happens, the audience blames the cliffhanger itself instead of focusing on the underlying problem. However, I can completely justify the second cliffhanger's presence. The whole season played with the idea of the ravenous wants of society toppling over any modicum of logic or survival and that one should just accept that nature instead of attempting to fix it and coherently fitting into the media trope of a "hero". The whole revolution attempted to follow through with that theme, the "Hero's" need for justice being extracted from those very same ravenous desires instead of the altruistic logic he had preached throughout the season, which later caused the demise of his friend. On paper, it was an excellent way to portray their themes and perhaps a more gray way of thinking, but I cannot justify how they executed it. Overall, I can see why you felt the way you did for each argument you presented but it seemed like you have guided your focus to superficial symptoms instead of the underlying problems that caused them. It disappoints me to see all the critism for Squid Game season two, most of it being built on the entertaiment rather than their artistic potrayal. I may have overthought it, but I personally believe that Squid Game is a lot more than a survival thriller; it wants to do so much more than that, and it's our job as the viewer to respect and see that.

      I just wanna say first of all I love discussing about movies and shows and seeing these types of comments is really why I'm doing these videos I love these so much. I respect the effort so much and thank you for actually listening to the video. I do feel like I left a little too much of what I said up to interpretation and I will admit I didn't spend multiple days writing this video this was mostly me rambling about my first impressions. I still stand by my first point because of what the writer said when season 1 first came out. He said it took him 12 years to write the first season and that he saw it as a complete story and I do think the first season completes the structure of the hero's journey. And I do think something can be made for the goal of making money while also being well written and worth our time. I think both are possible at the same time. For the second point, it's not that I don't think tone can't be inconsistent but that what I think season one was criticizing (mindless immoral entertainment at the expense of others) is lowkey what season two indulges in (I know this is fiction and that no one actually gets hurt but the way pop culture completely misses this point like when mr beast recreated the show and made his own reality tv show that is eerily similar, really gives me weird vibes when I see this show romanticize the same thing it used to criticize). It's not all bad though because this show does nail this tone change and I think this season is a lot more fun and funnier than season one and I think that's a good thing. And for the third point, it's not that I don't think it shouldn't have ended in a cliffhanger I love cliffhangers, I just think this one in particular really wasn't as interesting as the one in season one. It left me feeling more frustrated than excited for what's coming next because of how abrupt it felt. I think if they teased more of what was going to happen with guard 11 and what the boat captain was planning to do I think it would have made me more excited for season three. I still loved this season though but the pacing changes from season one is what was weird to me. Like I said in the video I think all the problems I have with this season will disappear when season 3 releases and that we can look at the whole picture. Thank you again bro for taking the time to write this I respect it a lot I love seeing all the discussions in the comments and watching people argue and theorize about what's gonna happen next.

      In fairness to the video, I think individual criticism / reviews have to focus more on the subjective takeaway of the product - which includes entertainment value. I don’t disagree about analysing the artistic value and intent of the season, but I think it also needs to be stated how said artistic intent lands on the viewer. For instance, my favourite show is The Leftovers. It’s one of the most beautiful, poignant and emotionally resonant pieces of art EVER MADE… to those of us who click with it. If you don’t connect to the characters, aren’t entertained by the story, or don’t like the show’s method of storytelling, then you just don’t click with the show. And I think that’s perfectly fair. You should be able to criticise a show, or at least voice your experience with a show, for failing to grab you - for one reason or another.

  • @LittlePenguinLove
    @LittlePenguinLove Месяц назад

    I’m not sure why you’re viewing this as an "ending that lead to nowhere" as opposed to just a cliffhanger. I might sound like a boomer here or really reaching with this, but bear with me: I think part of it could be that people now, especially younger gens, are very accustomed to streaming services like Netflix, where you can instantly watch the next episode, get an instant dopamine hit, and binge-watch an entire season in one sitting. As a millennial, I remember watching shows like Lost, where you had to wait a week for the next episode, and even longer when they leave seasons off on a cliffhanger. Waiting months to find out what happens next was just part of the experience. The ending is being treated like it was a final, unresolved conclusion, and we’ll never get the answers. Instead of as a cliffhanger where you have to wait for the resolution in the next season, where those questions will be addressed and plotlines wrapped up. I think the disappointment stems more out of not being able to get that instant dopamine hit and the answers right away.

    • @lowikk
      @lowikk Месяц назад

      That’s actually really interesting and I think I might have worded poorly what I wanted to say in the video. It’s not that I don’t like cliffhangers but I just thought this season didn’t leave us with an interesting one compared to season one. I think so many people had alot of different theories or ideas of where the story could go next in the first season but this season’s ending felt a bit underwhelming in comparison but yeah like I said I really think I will appreciate this season a lot more when season 3 comes out

    • @sylvery_
      @sylvery_ Месяц назад

      I think people wouldn't be viewing things as "leading to nothing" if the show was more transparent and open about this being more of a half-season in its marketing and branding. Releasing a season's worth of story is nothing new, even for streaming services, but they are almost always branded as "Season XA" or "Season XB" when they release. I purposefully went into this season with no knowledge of it besides trailers, so I had no way of knowing that, unlike the first, this story would only be half-told. It only feels misleading because of the way they presented it.

    • @MrGreaves
      @MrGreaves 27 дней назад

      I think it’s a fundamentally flawed structural issue, because this wasn’t written to be a finale. It was written to be just another episode halfway into a season - with Season 3 actually being a second half of Season 2, so that Netflix could milk the show a little more. Good seasonal cliffhangers usually also leave several areas of the story resolved, or at least partially rounded. But this “finale” just neglected so much of the story, so nothing felt even remotely conclusive. It’s not a bad cliffhanger ending, but the rest of the story also suffers. So it’s not the cliffhanger that sucks, it’s just the structure of the season and ending a season there.

  • @mixerwhisperer849

    netflix has been splitting one season into 2 parts for a while, like stranger things pt1 and 2. Thats what this season felt like, as if its the first part and we gotta wait another year for the second. It wouldve been better imo as a 5ep pt1 and 5 ep pt2. especially the role of the boat capn, it was kinda weird for me that the cop and him had a very friendly-banter kinda relationship. And the moment he started warning about the weather too much, i realised he was gonna betray and was actually hiding the truth about how the cop was found. I was waiting on him to pull a move and by the end of it while that specific scene of his betrayal was real good, it was way too late to give me the reaction they probably expected.

      @@lowikk oh yes absolutely! I was on edge during that scene and was relieved that it was a nightmare. Hey amazing video by the way, while other youtubers are talking about how the show was a let down or about how it isnt as massive of a movement or a spectacle this time around, you actually dove deep into how the plot points are flawed for the season and it puts so much into place. Keep going!

    apparently theres this theory that the dad isnt dead, cuz 1. he was never shown to be dead 2. he was still alive in the coffin 3. someone (prob 011) marked out his coffin there might be other clues that i forgot, but it makes sense because he was given way too much screen time to be that irrelevant

      Yeah I realized while editing that we never actually saw him die, and the guard that approached him is a triangle guard just like 011 so he’s most likely still alive

    I really didn't like how stuff just happened misterously. Like, for just two years the captain was playing a good guy and now he's trying to do what exactly? Or with the chip it was super weird how the front man didn't say anything about it and it just somehow happened. You're right with saying it was like half a season but I'll still watch the 3rd one once it comes out :D

      ig the captain always got him to the wrong place and was nice bc he wanted to cover up his real role or to update the frontman and what his brother is on. If the frontman said something about the chip he would reveal his true identity i think it was obvious that he knew without him directly saying it.

      @@pippop844 Yes, you're probably right about tha captain but the season still seems unfinished with the frontman. What I'm saying is that it "just happened" and they "just found out" but there's no explanation as to how. I just like seeing that in stories as I feel like it makes them more believable and I hope we'll get to see that in the 3rd season

      @@Avocados_forever Seems like media literacy ain't your cup of tea. Very obviously, the captain picked up Jun-ho on the orders of Front Man, and kept watch over him to prevent his investigation from going anywhere. That's why he shot Jun-ho in the shoulder, not in a fatal area.

      @feritye767 It's not inconsistent, it's an intentionally different choice. A choice made because they're going to end the story with season 2 and 3, and produced both seasons at the same time. They needed more episodes than S1, there's no point in trying to be "consistent" in that manner for consistency's sake.

    It's like in moonknight, where the main character becames overwhelmed with his different personalities.It's just too much at once. There are many good series and movies, but you don't know what you want or should watch first to keep up with the whole story and the parallels.

    What they mean by show dont tell is the reliance on clumsy exposition in most films, In Fury road and Furiosa there is no need to verbally explain what the colored signals mean.......... just that they are signals and the characters know and respond, which in turn lets us know the meaning. Similarly the Bobby knocker controls are moved from the back to the cabin for improved operation. Again its a fleeting shot that des not need explanation, which many other fe do
