What Universes Beyond Doesn't Get About Magic | Etchings
The week I was editing this, I played against doctor who cards for the first time. Nobody at the table, from experts to the person playing their first game of commander, wanted to read the cards they only interacted with each other, and we all fell into hysterics when they played "The Moment."

BLACK MIDI MENTIONED
I like your approach to the subject and bringing up a helpful discourse. UB has an entirely separate issue beyond the way it fails to really tie in the worlds and stories, but not a lot of people seem to be talking about how it could be done better. I am a huge fan of Doctor Who and Fallout, but the cards more than anything make me want to go back and play those games or watch those shows rather than play them in Magic the Gathering, where they can be more disruptive. If each match is a battle between opposing Planeswalkers, recruiting Starscream & The Daleks to fight against Preston Garvey and some Hobbits seems really weird to me.
3:07 are these supposed to be examples of bad reach ones or am I not getting it
Final Fantasy and Spider-man both simply can't do world building. Final Fantasy can't world build because it is all of final fantasy, there is no world to build they will have at minimum 16 different worlds they are building from. Final Fantasies mostly take place in different worlds with different things but we already know this set is all of the final fantasy. Spider-man could in theory build out New York City as a setting but people live in New York City, it is hard to world build a real place that actually exists through cards cuz it's boring to characterize NYC for a large amount of people. Like they can put up a daily bugel and a hot dog stand and a police station and stuff as cards and probably will but ultimately it's hard to world build with that because we bring our own baggage to that as a card.
final fantasy has iconic characters and themes that is passed on to every other game. moogles spells sid airships big bad boss etc plus dissidia already did a canon story of how all the ff stories link up.
@@Tcgscrub777 The FF worlds treat them differently though. There's like 5 distinct kinds of moogles. Now it will be interesting to see if the worlds are broken down into swaths of the color pie, like if white was more Ivalice and black was more Crystal Chronicles. (Though honestly I'll be impressed if there's any CC references as it's not a mainline thing.)
Hear hear. Even the M:TG base sets wander on how much world building. OTJ could have used more of it. But it's not like Brother's War does a great job of it. It's much like Lord of the Rings. Trying to show a grandiose amount of warring over a great span of time. I'm sure Tolkein wrote up descriptors of the various hamlets and dwarven tribes that aren't part of Lord of the Rings. But that's just it, a typical reading of the exact books or watch of the movies animated or Jackson, isn't going to include them either. There's not really time or space within some of these narrative structures. LOTR might have have a touch too many named things in Grond and Quickbeam, but as a setting it has a lot of named things, and those specific ones might have been driven by mechanical needs of making Legendary matter in draft. I didn't find it nearly as egregious there as opposed to say OTJ once again.
@Jerhevon you know what, you make some good points, and I like the color pie thing, that was what I had in mind when I starting yapping lol I agree.
This is a very good video. Fantastic
Thank you Kendrick Lamar
thank g-d i'm on indie game design youtube now
I somewhat disagree as the Warhammer cards are very GW as GW themselves forget about the day to day to focus on the big conflicts as in the far future there is only war
fun vid
top tier video, great work. you made some excellent points here.
0:18 ok that "make alberto laugh" card is actually genius though, cause it means opponents have an incenctive to try and make you laugh which is great flavour obviously, but ALSO that you get to do an evil maniacal laughter to end the game! perfect
Great video, this is an approach to the conversation I didn't even consider but makes a lot of sense.
I really enjoyed this video! Well thought out, informative, and interesting to hear. Thank you for taking the time to make this!
Man I really disagree with this take. I think if you are familiar with the universe beyond sets they're so enriched with lore and well designed. I really feel this was for the dr who and fallout sets. I think your argument of "we dont need another game like fortnight" misses out on the popularity of cross overs. People love them and they make buckets of money. I got back into magic because of the doctor who set and even though i mainly play Arena now, it was my love for a cross over that got me back in. My biggest disagreement here though is this thought that somehow magic lore is accessible. I just think you should be happy that there are more casual players getting into the hobby. It can only lead to more growth which is something we need if we dont want more LGS to shut down.
wait till they realize proxying is the same as ub, i agree with your take ful;ly
12:48 Really enjoying this video and learning about magic set design. but I want to pause for a second to make a serious argument for Black being a key part of Peter Parker's colour identity. While Peter consistently chooses White via his "Great Power means Great Responsibility" he nevertheless has a prominent Black shadowside that plays a consistent role in his character throughout many stories. In his introduction comic, Peter had an "I'll protect my family and let the world hang" attitude that is very Black and it was only after this attitude cost him his own uncle that he decided to use his power to protect everyone, not just a select few. In the beloved Sam Reimi's spiderman 2, he stops being Spiderman because of the difficulties it was putting on HIM personally. And in the most popular versions of the Black Suit arc, the suit amplifies his more bitter, selfish traits to the front. I think Black is the flawed side of Peter and because his stories so often show him as flawed, imperfect and human, I feel it's a part of his identity that should not be ignored.
My biggest problem is playing the Giants creature type that depicts this beings taller than trees or towering like mountains not having trample or reach, Cats have reach, a ram has trample, My giant has none of those
When it comes to naming of the cards: I think your observation is a good one, but at the same time kinda missing the broader spectrum. First: Magic sets are usually trying to tell a story. So naming cards based on certain events in the story/universe makes perfect sense. You can't just give semi-generic names to cards over and over again just to make the concept seasier to understand to a playter. At the same time giving cards names more related to the events is encouraging people to go out and learn more about the MTG stories.
10:27 the music at this point of the video makes it hard for me to hear what you have to say. Been like that issue for q few minutes
Thanks for letting me know! I'll keep that in mind for the future.
honestly the warhammer set was a success by your standards if i understood that right
I think the Warhammer sets were pretty good - I don't play 40K, but from what I can gather most of the game pieces in that game are translated pretty directly into mtg, and I can't have a problem with that. It helps when the media in question is also a tabletop game where you deploy individual units / affects.
@@Etchings. i also mean that the setting is pretty well translated since living in that world is "there is only war"
Wow! Dude, Pride Rock!
Fun fact, I had a full doctor who discussion with two friends that are fans of the series without ever watching a single episode in my life, just based on my knowledge of the cards. They didn't notice until I mentionned that my favorite character was "Me". They didn't remember the character and I didn't know how to explain because me neither lol.
This sounds very familiar lmao
"Me" is a reccuring character for only one season, she is never referenced again and will probably never be seen again due to the fact she is supposed to be immortal and the actress has already aged
@@andrewi.crocker8675 We could get a look alike down the road, or something along those lines. Fans of Game of Thrones will know her as Arya Stark, but she's a rather interesting character in the show and it is always nice when they find ways to return to them. There's also Jack Harkness who was portrayed a lot and though being an older man and immortal, they had a way to strangely tie him in, but you don't realize until much later. In the words of River Song: "Spoilers!"
I think Ravnica demonstrates this perfectly - and was able to do so because of block structure. Ravnica sets feature a lot of cards that have nothing to do with guilds. When you open a Ravnica booster, you'll find an Azorius Lawmage, a Rakdos reveller, a Simic experiment and perhaps one of the Izzet's bizarre spells, and those will all be very evocative, but you're also going to see a peasant militia, a rampaging beast, a black market merchant, and a guy whose whole thing is staying at home not getting involved. Return to Ravnica especially brings the city to life in a way that sometimes even makes the guilds feel secondary. There's this unavoidable feeling that the world is complex and mostly not affiliated with any guild. In contrast, New Capenna, despite having a "Citizen" creature type and many "Citizen" synergy cards, has fewer than five cards showcasing what life is like in the city for what I assume would be the majority of residents - every creature is either affiliated with one of the families, involved in the criminal business, or related to the drug allegory. It's a city full of criminals who seem to have no one to commit their crimes against.
Great point, and excellently worded! I didn't even consider the places in mtg this was lacking besides UB - it's definitely super important to pay attention to.
One of the best videos I've ever seen on Universes Beyond.
Thank you!
Unfortunatley i feel universes beyond plays into another bad magic habit, the legendary creaure, instead of seeing a world and a story being told from it, its a plainswalker traveling there or omenpathing whatever happens now, its less "what is this world" and more "woah look at this world and this guy who is a legendary creature" its too protagonist based i feel, and that directly plays into universes beyond, everything revolves around the main characters in the main source material, i love your hollow knight set because it has that window dressing of hollowness and not just, here is the knight and the major boss'
Absolutely correct. It's why I think they should have kept the mass desparking but never done the omenpaths. 95% of their named characters should have been retired - 60% permanently, 35% locked to their home planes and able to show up for stories in return-to sets but not otherwise. MTG needs a few years of self-contained planes with their own characters, who don't become interplanar protagonists because their stories have conclusions and are designed to showcase their planes, not their legendary creatures.
Totally agree! I also really don't like the "having multiple versions of the same character at different rarities" thing. I don't think anyone would miss that. I have never done that in my sets - but to make these characters feel central regardless, you can still make a lot of cards with the main characters on them like Stern Scolding.
@@Etchings. I disagree with that. I think if you *are* going to do a game about protagonists, as WOTC does, having multiple cards of the same character is beneficial because it alleviates the problem of every deck feeling like a big superhero crossover. You get to make a deck that's really focused on one character's story. Playing mono-red Chandra a couple of years back was much more fun for me than playing legendary creature mishmash like Thunder Junction was.
Amazing video! Great way of framing your argument and narrating it in story. Really great stuff. Keep it up!
Thank you!
TOTAL UB BANNING
Thank you for making this video. I was upset about the convo around the universes beyond thing. People were just upset about the idea and no one would talk about the bigger issue, that most of the universes beyond cards were just bad
Thanks! I think Wizards is still learning a lot, hopefully they can keep iterating on their approach and start to make some truly great sets.
I appreciate a good ambiance-setting device. Good work explaining why those windows into a world are so necessary, in contrast with "Look, it's Blorbo from media! You loooove Blorbo!"
Thanks!
Elesh Norns bravest solider strikes again!

hope to see more of your set designs in the future
Thanks!
I dont know magic the gathering But i do have a hyperfixation on something else...
I was hoping I'd get some people like you!
Alrighty, I have now taken the time to watch this video and truly appreciate it. It is a marvel, an absolute wonder. This really emphasizes to me how beautiful a large and organized community of custom card creators would be. We're too disorganized to be able to find and catalogue awesome achievements like this for many people to enjoy. But these are dreams of mine for a later date. I would like to now take some time to ask swwwwwwwwdddddsome questions. Firstly, any tips or advice on making a video like this, from editing, compiling footage, and writing a script. I've a set that I am nearly done with that I want to show off, but don't feel like I know where to start to actually making a video like yours to do the set I've made justice. Secondly, what are you currently using for both card creation and game design journaling/progress tracking? I've fallen in love with MTGNexus for creating, but it doesn't have the best tools for cataloquing the process and finished product as of yet.
Thanks for your support! ^^ For editing, I use the free program davinci resolve. A lot of my editing decisions are just based on my experience a- watching a lot of similar youtube videos, and b- my experience with UX and game design, studying things like what sort of tools are useful for helping people understand a point / idea intuitively, thinking about it from the users' side, etc. I use the website mtg.design for creating card mockups, though if you have easy access to a windows machine i believe MSE (magic set editor) is typically the way to go. I don't journal a whole lot, but writing the design document at the beginning of the project is important, and from there, using a combination of retracing my own design steps and looking back at discord messages I sent in my project channel where i was discussing the design of the set with other people and getting feedback. Just a google doc works for documentation though.
What an awesome project! And you're absolutely right about players expressing things they love through Magic cards. I search for cards with abilities that match my favorite characters. I use "MTG Design" to change the art. I keep everything else the same and put these pieces in my Commander decks.
Thank you! This is something more people should do, it's really fun :)
"The dreamers lay sleeping" saga in your pdf is unfinished (nevermind its finished in another pdf)
Beside of that, amazing work!
Thank you!
when i tried to print this out on paper a bit of it was cut off do you know how to fix this?
I'd have to see exactly what the error was, and how you're printing it. I could try to help though!
@ IVE FIXED IT NOW, THANK YOU THOUGH! IM HAVING FUN WITH THE DECK
This video Is INCREDIBLE!!!
So, insect trival + voltron?
Yep! Plus some other stuff :)
Radiance can't be reanimated though. Show and Tell maybe, but it's not as good with Sneak Attack as existing options like Atraxa and Emrakul, and Sneak Attack is a common alternative win-con for Show and Tell decks.
Yeah, I guess most of the instant speed reanimates only keep it around for a turn, and it's not exactly an insta-kill kind of card.
@@Etchings. It doesn't matter if the reanimate is instant-speed. Radiance, as shown in this video is not exiled *after* being put in the graveyard, it's exiled *instead* of being put into the graveyard. It never touches the graveyard and cannot be targeted by any reanimate effect.
I am confused how hiveling brakes the the color pie. it looks fine to me
So hybrid mana designs need to be able to be cast with either green or white mana. I don't think this design could be mono green, so it's a pie break, though not a terrible one.
1:52 NGL judgement for all goes HARD
It's a great design!
Ah yes, the intersection of my interests. I am, as they say, the target audience. EDIT: Also, JAPUDI MENTIONED LETSGOOOOOOO
Loving the Japudi fans in the comments
Damn, I had this same idea to make a Hollow Knight MTG set ;-; I'll just watch the video, and then still go and try to put my own spin on it then :3
I'd love if you did!
What tool did you use to create these cards?
I used the website MTG.design, with a bit of help from the Magic Set Editor program
calling magic the best game you've ever played is craaaaazy, you need to play better games lol
My girlfriend agreed with this comment
@@Etchings. that's nice, hi girlfriend! <3
This is single-handedly the most impressive custom Magic set I have ever seen, especially as a Hollow Knight fan!! One day, whenever Silksong releases, you should definitely create a follow-up expansion. Incredible work!
Thank you! And I'd love to create a silksong expansion, one day!
I'm a very big fan of Magic and also very big fan of Hollow Knight, so sometimes I think that it would be interesting to make a thematic set or at least a few custom cards. So it gives me real pleasure to see how someone else had the patience, imagination and talent to bring to life this idea. So far, the only fan project of this scale that I have come across is set "Hollows of Lordran", based on Dark Souls. And in comparison those projects, each made by literally one person out of pure enthusiasm, feel much deeper and much more faithful to the primary source, than any official releases of UB. Great work!
Thanks so much! I'm glad you liked the set, and I'm actually currently working on a vid where I go over what I think my projects do differently to universes beyond to make them feel more authentic.
This is Awesome
Thank you!!! <3 You are awesome Penguin DnD
