THE CRAFT
Tucked away in the woods of Maine, the scorching hot forge of Black Dog Ironworks keeps the winter chill away. It’s warm red glow lights up the workshop for Matthew Foster, the shops owner. Often hard at work, Matthew creates distinctive hand forged objects that challenge the integrity of any store bought substitute. An artist at heart, he considers each of his designs to be reflections of the unique rustic character that defines much of northern Maine. With focus and purposeful action, each piece is thoughtfully crafted with hammer and anvil. Once in hand, the weight and visceral significance of each item defines them as heirlooms.
HANDMADE IN MAINE
Black Dog Ironworks is operated from my home in rural Maine. The name comes from my two black dogs, Dakota, a German Shepard and Henley, a black lab & Catahoula mix. Each of my pieces is handmade using traditional and modern blacksmithing techniques. I honed my craft as an art student at the University of Maine where I studied s

Beautiful work. How far away are these bottles you're opening though 😂
Meanwhile I need 27 heats just to punch the hole....
Awesome!
Very nice!!
Love the alec steele hammer!
Me too! I've had it for years now and it's my go to.
@@BlackDogIronworks i have made my own rounding hammer because it was cheaper than buying one!!and the process of forging it is the best
Very nice work!!
Hey Nate and Matt you are a wonder full team!!!
You work really fast!
I started smithing over 50 years ago, so I'm familiar with the process. I don't remember a smithing video that shows making such good use of your time. Very good job. I enjoyed it.
Enjoyed watching! Thanks for sharing and hope to see more vids in the future. Keep up the awesomeness
the legendary bottle opener is made from round rod with attacking snake cut. the best i ever had.
Thats awesome cool process!!!
More content please Also, the next batch of material was in the forge for quite a while.. would it start to oxidize?
A fine Forging project. You make it look easy. Well done...
Well done sir and welcome back too!
Thank you!
I liked the closeup shots of the hammer blows.
Awesome Vid. Thanks for sharing. What size bar did you start with?
Thank you! 1/2" Square
Great instructional video. Many thanks. Would have liked to see the jig in action but I can image what's going on there.
I'd have liked to get it in the shot too. I'll try next time around.
Очень хорошие видеоролики. Если вы живой, пожалуйста, продолжайте делать вещи и показывать нам.
Excellent technique!!! Bravo!
Damn, that's nice! So, how much would you sell these for? The reason I'm asking is that I'm going into business for myself and don't want to overcharge or undercharge for my products.
Very nice! Great job.
Very nice work
Nice BUT- AS on old blacksmith--WIPE THE SLAG OFF YOUR DAMNED ANVIL BETWEEN HEATS OR YOU MAY LOSE AN EYE...
As a new blacksmith ... thanks for the advice! I didn't quite comprehend that slag could be a serious eye hazard. Seems so crumbly and thin ... I usually avoid safety glasses ... but my gut tells me to wear em quite often when I'm working metal.
Thank you blackdog
very nice work, on my list to try this, thank you
I work in an office and spend my days sitting in a stiff chair behind a computer. This looks so much more interesting than reading emails and looking at spreadsheet. Why am I not doing this. I don’t know, maybe the grass just looks greener on the other side.
Love your simple approach
Great job...... you got straight to the point and I could see what was going on easily. I have subbed. If your aim is to teach the skills, a few wider shots showing how your body is positioned would tell us a lot too.
Nice Looking opener !
Beautiful results, you show , What can be done ! Great Video !
Oh my goddess. what i was seeing.....over quality
This is so helpful thank u so much
Good vid
Incredible mate!! Nice work!
is that 5/16 or 3/8 round stock?
3/8
Beautifully shot video, good job
