I am in the same conundrum with my Singer sewing machine. My husband gave me a sewing machine forty years ago, which I loved. That stopped working. I then fell into the trap of purchasing very inexpensive Singer's which would have issues after about 4 years. I've decided to buy a new machine for my birthday and can't decide between a Janome or Juki. I don't need top of the line or many built-ins to the machine, just one that will last. Your videos always give me my 'sewjo' back! Thanks!

I had a similar experience with a different type of singer. The person I took it to for repair said he hates singers. I finally took it in, he never called me back to talk about it and I never called to check on it. It is out of my life and never again.

I bought a heavy duty top of the line Pfaff in 1973. It died after 30 years of faithful service. I will never quit missing it. After struggling with a low end Elba for 19 years, I bought a middle of the line Janome which I like fine but it doesn’t handle heavy stuff. Once you get used to it, I think you will be happy enough.

Love love love my Janome.. Mine is a quilting size ( the bed is 11 inches) but it sews clothes like a dream I no longer quilt.. I am now 77 and just enjoy making things I need.. You're right i never used most of the decorative stitches either..Have fun.. It a wonderful machine

It is better to use vintage sewing machines. Computerized machines do not last.

The Consumer Right Act 2015 says something like goods must be fit for purpose and last a reasonable length of time, no matter how long any warranty is. I’d expect a sewing machine costing £50 to last a couple of years. I’d expect a sewing machine costing hundreds to last well over 5 years, especially if it was kept in a craft room like yours and looked after. Unfortunately you’d probably only get a repaired or replaced Singer. They should’ve replaced it when it went wrong within 6 months at their cost rather than getting you to take it all the way to Dublin at your expense. Good luck with your new machine!

Big hugs. I totally understand. I have Singer Heavy Duty 4423 and upgraded to Janome Sewist 780DC. I like them both, but the longer I use Janome, the less impressed I am. Don't get me wrong, it is a good machine, but it's very temperamental I know that computerised machines do malfunction way more often than manual ones, and I am considering switching back to have manual ones as my main.

Gosh I’d be raging! We don’t seem to have many sewing machine shops left in Northern Ireland now. I have a brother innovis machine, embroidery machine and overlocker I bought online about 5 years ago and the only issue I had was the threader broke but Sew Knit on Newtownards Road in Belfast fixed it when it was serviced last year. I hear a lot of people rate David Drummond in Scotland very highly for machines. Hope you love the new machine x

Hi Mary Ellen. That sounds a lot to me like this machine wasn’t fit for purpose. Spending €700 on a machine you are entitled to believe that it would last for longer than 3 years, and also like the company knows this issue would be present. I would be looking for a full refund. Small claims court if you felt like a further fight.

I have only ever tried using a thread cutter once. Cannot see the point. If you have to go back and trim the thread, why not do it properly the first time? It doesnt take long and it is easy to judge how far to pull on the thread with a little practise. But I am truly sorry about your machine. Repair shops should have machines you can hire, so not being able to sew is less frustrating. Machines always malfunction when you have a block of time set aside to sew lol. They know.

Singer does not stand for quality like it used to we always had singer machines at school people regarded them as the best out there I have a singer stylist quantum touch it’s pink on the front but I don’t sew much these days so have not experienced any problems so far can’t wait to see your new machine and what you chose take care

Oh wow! So sorry to hear about your sewing machine. I’ve had the same exact sewing machine for the past 6 years. So far I haven’t had any issues or problems with it. I rarely use the thread cutter. Beautiful fabrics. Hope your machine is back. I have been sewing dresses for this event a good few years. My aim is a min of 10 dresses to donate this year.

Such pretty fabrics & I think the girls who gets these dresses are going to be so pleased with them. This will be my second year getting involved with this project - last year I made five using the Popover Sun dresses. This year I have completed four with six more cut out in the size for a twelve year old as they mentioned they get less of this size. I have also downloaded the pattern Alisa’s has done this year & will try & make a couple of these & I think they are for a six year old. Hope you get your machine back soon.😊

I love to quilt but it does take time .. I need to know if I'm giving it to someone they appreciate the work..Not everyone does.. I am now back to garment making and fewer quilts

Good that you are honest about not starting Quilting😊 I find you either make one and say never again or, like me, plunge head first into that rabbit hole never to emerge! It's been 36yrs for me and has never waned ❤ It's not for the faint hearted. At 65 I have enough fabric to last me till I'm 100. Plus being mainly a hand quilter I currently have 35 tops waiting for me to finish, many half made tops oh and I also like hand piecing so have that going on too.😂😂😂 love your purchases have fun with the redwork, I've done that too but in blue 😂😂 will look forward to seeing your Xmas stitcheries.
