Can you fix a fiberglass pool that has cracked?
We do fix a pool that has cracked from time to time.
Do you not clean off the gel coat with acetone after it’s dried? It usually leaves a tacky feeling without cleaning it off
The last coat of gel coat gets a surfacing agent "Wax" so it doesn't get tacky and shines.
What type of resin do you use? Polyester?
Dale refinished my pool and less than a year later all of the gel coat has been bubbling off. Defective materials? Dale has not returned any calls or texts, I hope that he is doing okay, but the gel-coat he used didn't adhere and we have to completely redo this project. It did look great for about 10 months!
What gelcoats do you use?
Good day gentleman great job. Which part of the world are you in. I'm asking because I am in South Africa JOHANNESBURG
What kind of cost would this be ?
Just got a pool and it’s not even finished yet and has a crack in it. I’m regretting my decision of even getting one now
what's the name of gelcoat used please?
What a superb video!! Thanks!! I do have one question, though.... I was under the impression that a fibreglass pool required bracing to stop it from caving in once the water has been emptied from it?? Why did you not have to brace this pool before commencing the job?
Excellent work.
How long does a repair last?
How much did a job like this cost???
What type of gel coat are you using, is it the so-called top coat or waxed gelcoat? How long do you let dry between each gel coat application?
What attachment is on when your grinding the floor?? Currently taking off fiberglass off a pool and need tips on how to do it easily. Im Currently using a hatchet and chopping up peices off. Any other ideas i could do??
How did you drain the fiberglass pool without it pushing out of the ground?
I drain the water down to about 2/3 empty of water first. I then get into the pool and feel if there is any water under the pool. If no drain pocket is there, then I take long drill bits and drill 1/2" holes through the fiberglass into the ground. This process will make the hydrostatic pressures the same on both sides of the pool and ground and then we can keep pumping with out worry the rest of the water and the pool stays in place. Hope this answers your question.
No respirator worn. Don't the fumes get to you?
Thank you for the video. Can I use the resin putty in blisters from a concrete pool as well?
Jay, I would say not to use the resin putty on concrete. Do you have a concrete pool that has been fiberglassed over? I have not seen blisters on a concrete pool, unless the concrete was fiberglassed, there are some companies that do the fiberglass overlay. Polyester resins will not bond to concrete, so there would be delamination of the putty from the concrete. Hope this helps answer your question.
You should totally sell a how-to series! I bet you'd make a mint. Great videos!
Thank you. I had made this video to show customers how we go about repairing pools. It is easier to show the customers than to try to explain the process we use. I will have a new video coming soon also on repairing blisters and the complete restoration of a pool. Stay tuned.
@@dalekoehn4691 Hey Dale, is it possible to fill blisters and then gel coat without re-fiber glassing the entire pool?
@@dalekoehn4691, do you use a specific resin for the CSM? I used some Bondo Fiberglass Resin with 1708 to repair a couple holes, but it looks much thicker than what you're applying, and seems like it would be hard to spread and get smooth with a roller. Any advice on where I can find what you use? Thank you!
@@jamieverley I use a low profile laminating resin. The Bondo resins that I have seen is a gel and not good for much of anything in my opinion. The best place to find Resin is a Marine supply store or a Fiberglass supply outlet store if one exist in your area. Good luck in your search.
@@patrickcollins9845 Oh, yes you can go that way. We do not apply Fiberglass mats onto all pools that we do. The reason we applied the fiberglass mats in the video was to show how to go about if it is needed. The only reason we will glass is if we find many, many small blisters the size of pencil erasers, to many to try to fix, on the surfaces. The Fiberglass mats will act as a barrier to keep the small blisters from opening up. Hope this helps you out.
Do you sand again between applying the mats and the gel coat? Such an awesome video!
Yes, we do sand the new fiberglass installed before applying the gelcotes.
@@dalekoehn4691 thanks so much for the reply! I'm going to try doing this myself in the next couple months. Your videos are really great!
@@jamieverley Good Luck with your project.
What is the putty used to fill the bubbles? Do you use Cabosil and Qcel? Thanks!
@@jamieverley when making the putty, use resin, 1/4" chopped fiberglass strand, Q-cell and cab-o-sil
I repair all fiberglass pools regardless of issue. I travel anywhere in the U.S. but since Dale is in Florida ill let them have that one😁
I have a project in Indy!!
How about NM?
I have an all-fiberglass pool that needs help. We are in the Black Hills of SD. If you would like a pool with a view, we'd appreciate it. We have a guest apartment if you need it.
@@tosseiaholmes6112still have the project?
@@dawnb7972I have a fiberglass repair company, I can help you out!
Would it be ok to fill the blisters then gelcoat the pool w/o refiberglassing the entire pool? If not why? Ty.
I would like to know the answer to this question too
That's alot of labor and patience. Redid my fiberglass steps. Had probably 15 blisters no way I'd want to do an entire pool!
I need my pool recoated, I live in San Jose California any phone numbers?
Sorry Salvador, I cannot help you out. As We are located in Southwest Florida, we do not know any company or person to have you contact in your area. Good Luck.
@@dalekoehn3955 Thank you.
I have a pool that needs resurfacing can someone tell me contact info for estimate? I live in central Florida
i dont no who still sees this video but it is the best i have seen so far and i will use it to repair the fiberglass walls full of blister on my pool the pool was built in 1971 and has not been used in many years but is still in good shape besides the blisters hope by using this video will be swimming in it this summer
Thank you for the response to the video. I get a lot of calls from others wanting to repair their pools and are using the video as a guide line. Good luck with your project.
Did you end up repairing your fiberglass pool yourself?

Can you convert a concrete pool into a fiberglass pool, meaning you just add fiberglass on the concrete?
You could do it, but the issue is that the Fiberglass and resins will not bond well to the concrete. We repair a lot of pools that have had fiberglass layered on concrete done by a company and the fiberglass releases from the concrete. We have seen where you could pull the fiberglass loose by hand from the concrete. It is best to just stay with your concrete pool with no Fiberglass added to it.
Where were you when I had mine done?? The guy that did ours stopped after the fiberglass. NO GELCOAT!!
I cannot understand why anyone would apply fiberglass and resins to a pool surface and not coat the fiberglass with something to seal the surface of the pool. They must have no experience with working with fiberglass laminates and coatings.
I’m very curious. How is your pool doing w/o the gelcoat on it?
@@danielle22226 I may NOT have the correct language, but,,, We had many black spots popping up inside our fiberglass pool. From one year to the next they doubled in numbers and size. We hire a company who explained to us what it was and what it was called. They drained the pool. Ground the entire interior of the pool. Ground out all these black spots and any blisters. Let it all dry. Filled anyplace that was ground deep into the fiberglass and then put (1) layer of fiberglass with some (white in color), resin that came in 5 gallon buckets on the walls and bottom rolling it all in with rollers and what they called a PIN ROLLER to get any bubbles out. It was very coarse. Next time I went out back, they were filling the pool and said they were done.... You can still see the fiberglass sheet and it is still very rough and now, 4-5 years later, the black spots are coming back..... (We had issues with these black spot right away, but they did fix them). Still, there is no gel coat and we could never get them to fix or finish it. Before anyone says: CALL A LAWYER, lawyers cost FAR MORE than I would ever get out of this failing company.. I would really like to have it done by someone who knows what they are doing and that will make it like NEW!!! Ps. They called the black spots COBALTING....
@@SteveP-vm1uc wow, how long did they let it dry before filling it?
@@danielle22226 I don't remember exactly, but the same afternoon they finished sanding the steps, they were already filling the pool... I questioned it, but they said it flashed very fast, so no worries. Hell, they had the deep end full to about 3 feet while one guy was cleaning up and the other was touching up the top edge.. This truly pissed me off. Their website said 3 coats and the last two were leveling and color. It was supposed to be BLUE!! To add insult to injury, they covered over the skimmer flange. So to change anything there it has to be ground out.. Guess who's WEIR VALVE is shot!! (This weir valve snaps into 2 curved fingers on each side. New weir door doesn't stat in place as the fingers are worn out).
Amazing.
