@@theglorydaysofopera9697 There does seem to be a dearth of "great" singers nowadays. There are some very good singers, but certainly no new Pavarotti's or Sutherland's, when every performance was a great exciting occasion and the vocal fireworks were guaranteed. Sad and inexplicable really.
@@YortOK to me, so many of the ones with great potential are blowing it out so early, forcing the voice , singing too much, too soon, too heavy, too soon.
Yes! The Hindemith is wonderful
Not quite yet the Joan Sutherland whom we have all come to know and love, but on the way. Apart from this, the Melba 1910 recording of this song sets the standard, and Sutherland most likely was familiar with it.

@@MrMin316 How do you know? And where is this taken from? It's definitely the two of them. I actually believe it may be from a (1976 or so) BBC documentary hosted by Bernard Levin. But I'm going on recollection. Someday I'll look it up.
It’s 57’ . I checked too. The voice is too light and bright for the 70’s documentary you refer to

It a wasnt a mistake, it was just a beautiful but unexpressive tone.

She sang with a much darker and heavier sound in the early 50’s.... well on her way to a completely different fach from the one Bonynge led her to.
