Another typical Japanese 'media and documentary learned military ideas' animation. Japanese directors should join the army and do some live training... They need to experience the feelings of real field and military. I mean Be more real. They still makes a generation old tones, designs, action and decriptions... Even though it's just a animation, too old unreal things... so fed up.
They are re-arming now, with the so called ''threat of China''. Their ''old'' believes glorifying patriotic nationalistic tone is gaining track. Case is... If somehow they overcome China USA hopes Japan will be a liberty loving country. But the real question is, will Japan stays like what USA wants them to be, Or will Japan and it's ppl again have wings and aspire 1939 brainwashed by their leaders as in past their GOD the Emperor Hirohito?
Civil war between the current Japanese government and pro-civilian reform govt. US sides with the current Japanese govt for anime reasons. That's about it

This is an alternate timeline (well, the series name literally has Alternative in it) where rather than entirely succumbed to Western modernization, the Shogunate is restored aka they undid the Meiji somehow. Though parts of the history still resembles real life Japan esp on WWII matters, this Japan managed to retain the traditional systems and values somehow. What you see is literally IJA armies like how they used to be during WWs, though there's still JSDF elements poured into it. Also that globalization is basically not being done as BETA started attacking the world 3 decades prior to the series timeline, which is basically around Cold War.
The Japanese TSFs (Type 94 "Shiranui") in this scene are from a rebel faction (The Patriots) that is attempting a coup d'etat to get UN forces out of Japan as they feel they have been "colonized" at this point by the UN under heavy US influence. The US TSFs (F15E "Eagle") we see in the beginning are from the local US base near Yokosuka if I remember correctly and have been deployed there to help regular Imperial Japanese Army forces and UN troops to stop the rebels. The rebels don't make any effort to comunicate in English probably because they see it as a form of "disrepect" to be forced to speak English in their own country by the same faction (US) that in their eyes is trying to turn their nation into a puppet state. Then the F22s show up and crash the party as expected. What's intresting is that the F15s in this scene are Generation 2 TSF fighting against Generation 3 Type 94 (far more advanced and manouverable my) yet they are still capable of keeping up with them and giving them trouble. I think this is meant to be a "tribute" to the F15 excellent reputation as a fighter irl.
