Neve Portico 5042 Demo (Rock, Electro, Instruments). Hardware Tape Simulator.
This is the best compressor pedal ive used. Maxon just doesn't market their stuff as hard as mxr keeley etc etc. This is A+++.
I agree they are under marketed. This is basically a DBX 160XT in pedal format, very useful!
Sounds fantastic on the whole mix ... Self noise is low I hope ... :))
Def less noisy than tape that is for sure! It's not that noisy from what I recall.
@@WheelieMix Thanks ... Do you think it's good quality to insert this unit into a mastering chain for example before final mastering compressor for that added "tape mojo" on a whole mix? I like the sound of it very much and as I look it up, the specs of the unit are pro level, the one thing that I don't know if I saw right was when you engage "tape" the level drops for about 3 db, but that is not a problem, it's just interesting; if I'm right ...
@@b.hornetiii.6771 Mastering I am not sure as I would usually favours very clean processors for Mastering. But for Mixbus deffo! It adds a nice compression, saturation and interesting EQ profile. The leve drop will be dependent on how much it is getting driven and it is reducing the peaks. So it may vary depending on the material that it is used on.
This unit was not made to transform this kind of bad sounding drums, it is for gentle use in the mix buss where it really shines, I don’t understand the complain🤙🏼
Hello, I think you misunderstood me : - The examples I use aren’t « bad sounding drums ». They are from overhead stereo pair. - The LMC compressor has been used for decades to transform drums sounds. So yes I was expecting it to do it like the original. - My review doesn’t only focuses on drums, but also vocals and mixbus. Where I feel it works better (on vocals especially). On Mixbus, the transformer sound disappointed me a bit, the fact that the input cannot drive was a let down too, the Vintage Drive was a tad noisy sometimes for mixbus and not my cup of tea, the width was working but not better than some plugins I already have, the Violet EQ was very nice, the M/S insert matrix was great. But I’ve said all of this in my video already :). It’s def not only about drums :).
Any idea if the 500 series can be used as just HQ line amps also? I also wonder if they made any changes between this and the white version.
Imho they could be used like that yes. I think they might have done a few changes, since the power supply is different afaik.
Nice video! Im a few steps away from selling mine, the only pros i hearor use is the violet eq and the insert point! Vintage drive too noisy, not sure why in holding on to it
Ha thanks! Yeah Violet EQ is cool, the 500 version is exactly the same and quite affordable. I also like the insert point and especially the M/S matrix it offers. But it was too expensive for me to keep it just for that. Was great on vocals too, I'd have kept it just for vocals if it had a utilitarian compressor instead of the quite bad "talkback" compressor (that sounds nothing like the original imho).
It sounds quite bright. As opposed to something like Waves J37. Even right after inserting. Not ordinary plugin, but useful, when you don't want to loose the hights even at extreme settings
Good point indeed! Some tape machine/tape formula/bias IRL can do that kind of thing actually.
Just say you don’t like it lol 🤦
I am just being honest about what I like and dislike. Doing a video just saying "I don't like it" would not make a lot of sense to me.
Would rather the neve mbt but it’s 3x the price 😕 Was curious about this one but the fact it’s not great when really pushed is kinda putting me off. Can you recommend any alternatives with similar feature set?
Yeah the Neve is kinda expensive and the SSL seem to be the only one in that price point. Personally, I'd grab a Violet EQ if you like the EQ from it. It can be found for quite cheap on the 2nd hand market. Then probably a pair vintage transformers (which can be found for cheap too) and just roll with that. It's not giving you everything but it's giving you the EQ and saturation. The HF compressor could be imitated in the box quite easily, and the Drive doesn't sound great when pushed so it's better to keep it subtle anyway. Although don't get me wrong : This video only shows MY TASTE, not an ultimate truth. I can see why some people may like it. Especially for those who likes more modern sound.
@@WheelieMix cheers for the advice 👍🏼 i guess master bus processing is meant to be pretty subtle, but would be nice to really drive it now & again. I have an analogue mixer & pair of reasonable eq, thinking of adding warm audio's 2mpx, which has the transformers , full voltage tubes . Used subtly on the master bus could work good enough for me! Then maybe add the spl gemini for stereo width depth m/s fun. Thing is add those 2 up & im at the Neve price point 🤦🏼😂 Enjoyed you vid anyway refreshingly honest 👍🏼
@@eyesintheskies Yes true. Although some style call for aggressiveness on the mixbus sometimes. Ha yes, I personally do not buy Warm products. Because of their low resale value and also I wasn't convinced by all the tests I listened to (except their 1073 seemed to sound quite good). Gemini sounds fun! Yeah, do not forget about 2 transformers. They can do wonder on the mixbus, they are passive and very cheap (much cheaper than any outboard gear). Actually as we speak, I am exporting a mix with a pair of 60's transformers on the mixbus and I am really liking the result! Haaa thanks for the kind word. There are too many reviews that are brown-nosing brands hoping to get free stuff or because they are under a contract. I am trying to offer something different and honest, eventhough not perfect and polished (I am clearly not a RUclipsr and got no time to be one hehe).
@@WheelieMix i agree, i quite like saturating a whole mix sometimes. In fact im probably prone to overdoing it 😂 As for warm audio thing id probably take advantage & buy used. The 2mpx has cinemag transformers, inside & is based on an old ampex 351 50s/60s unit. But i imagine the real vintage transformers are pretty good. First realised what they can do when i got a hudson broadcast guitar pedal, love that thing! What id really love is that overstayer modular channel, but a bit outside my budget 🤦🏼 Have you heard of it, interesting unit, especially once you get into modulating it via CV. Trying to justify the price tag as looking at it as 3 or 4 units in one & convince myself id be saving money!!!
@@eyesintheskies Haha yes gotcha. The Overstayer is great but man it's expensive! It's a never ending quest innit hehe.
Maxon CP-9 pro plus is the best compressor pedal that I know.
It's very good indeed. It's especially great at balancing guitars that are a bit bright like Telecaster/Stratocaster imho!
Very strange, on my system it's the other way around, software has slightly more clarity, hardware slightly more bottom end but overall very close. I have the software and I'm even more impressed with it now!
Yes I am quite surprised at how close it was. Especially regarding the calibration!
I wasn’t keen on it either - it’s a nice idea but felt like a quick way to make things sound flat and contained… not what I’m usually looking for in music!
It could definitely be used well, but when spending that much money on it, I probably expected a bit more tbh.
Very cool review! What do you think about Pulsar 8200? Thanks
Thanks! I remember preferring very slightly to the Amek. But to be honest, they are as close as one could get.
great A/B test - would love to see this re-done with the SSL's own Native Channel plug :)
Thanks! Didn't they emulated a 9k desk for this one instead?
@@WheelieMix yes I think so, but it has E style EQ option. But good point on the dynamics, I don't know how they differ between E and 9k... It's a great sounding plugin so I'd be very interested
@@ParlanceOpus Yeah the E/G option is also available on the AWS 900 (Super Analogue SSL sound) so that makes sense. No idea how the dynamics differ actually, good question!
WheelieMix!! Great to see a new video!
Ha thanks Gus! I hopefully while get time to post more!
Your reviews are the absolute best on the internet
Ho wow thanks a lot! I am so glad to hear this!!!!
Curious what you think is better in the price range.
To be honest, it's hard to beat in this price range. But I'd rather get a nice stereo EQ or a nice stereo buss comp rather than an all feature packed unit that does not wow me on most. But that's just me :). Also the resale value keeps plummeting. Which is not great.
Your mix very noised 😮
It's a rough mix here, and I don't know what you mean by "noised" sorry.
great sounding !!!!
It is pretty good indeed! I hope price won't get stupidly inflated!
And I really like SSL Fusion!!!
If you like that's great! I found a few cool sounds out of it tbh ☺.
Made in China...
Yes I think it is indeed.
Most gear is actually
@@FaithavenNot in the high end audio equipment
@@rectape well I have $5000+ pieces of gear so maybe anything over that. If you can point to sources that would be great. I will research including its assembly and where the components are from.
I think Audioscape are made in the US. Culture Vulture I think are made in the UK. Buzz Audio some were made in NZ. But my knowledge regarding new outboard gear is pretty limited in that regard I must confess.
I'm glad you're back (RUclips). Super exciting with your "Unbiased reviews". Great video as always mate!
Hey, ha good to see you again! I am happy to see you here too :D!
I can't believe there is a new Wheeliemix video lol. What a surprise - and RUclips finally put a notification for it. I can tell you was very disapointed with the Fusion ! Understandable, i felt the same. It's good for someone who is ITB and wants an all in one box for the mixbus. I was gonna say it's a good opportunity to compare it with the Kiive plugin but they didn't emulate the transformer or the HF compressor
Hahaha happy to still see you here hehe! Glad YT notified you :D. Yes the Fusion is not baaaad, but it's still a good chunk of money so it better blows me away or I won't keep it. Yes Kiive didn't but they emulated the Rupert Neve unit, which seems like a much more interesting unit to me (not the same price too hehe).
@@WheelieMix The Neve emulation on the Kiive plugin sounds nice, i much prefer it to the Fusion. Still the thing for me is whether i would use it on a bus because if a plugin isn't doing what hardware does with dimension then i still have to rely on hardware for the mixbus. I really like it though.
@@bontempo1271 Yes also the Neve he emulated is 3x the price of the Fusion. But I'd prefer it too. To be 100% honest, I don't think hardware brings any "dimension". A stereo track will still be stereo. The sense of depth and width is usually very easily explainable on a scientific standpoint and has very little to do with actual "dimension" and "depth". All of the sense of dimension, depth, width are trickery we do to ours ears. So I don't think that "dimension" could also be brought by plugins, it's just a different route to take, that could maybe take more time to tweak.
@@WheelieMix Yes it's just our perception, but it's definitely there. I hope one day this mystery is solved
@@bontempo1271 Indeed it's just our perception :). Just by saying that I think you solved the mystery actually.
How did you set up Baseline Pro to use it on a whole track? I only used it on bass because when I tried it on higher frequency ranges it sounded kinda weird. But I didn't went into "science" testing with it.
I pushed the width a bit (not too much) and pushed the harmonics on side (on side mode). I think it was on the medium intensity. That's usually what I do and it works pretty well with me :). The trick is not to push the width too much.
always sounded better when you bypassed it haha
Pretty much hehehe x). Ah it was alright on the vocal imho. No don't you think?
transformer sounded good sometimes! but i would think that I could get that topend air trough many other ways@@WheelieMix
@@MariJu1ce To be honest that's a very good point indeed, I agree with you here.
Me too brother, I am a RND guy. I missed you my guy.
Haaaa thanks man haha :D. I am glad to be back! Which RND gear do you have instead of the Fusion?
I have never heard a good drive in the box. That's where analog usually shines.
How would you characterize a "good drive". I know tough question, but depending on your answer, there could potentially be some plugins I could recommend.
@@WheelieMixwhich plugins?
@@hinky7729 It depends on what he means by "good" drive box. Some people love very bright "punchy" saturation. Others prefer more mellow/soft saturation etc...
@@WheelieMix just give us some tips for both (if you have the time). My generation didnt grew up on analogue - so it is very interesting for us, when someone with experience share their impressions
@@hinky7729 Hey I didn't grew up on analog too, I grew up with an ASUS laptop, ain't no boomer or X xD. Jokes aside, tell me what you like because there are literally 10 000 options. So there is no point in me recommending you something you won't like or use ;).

My pleasure Dirk! Thanks for the kind comment!
@WheelieMix - Softube have a SMC2B plugin. It would be great to see you do a comparison with your hardware.
I saw that, I don't have this hardware anymore unfortunately. But I am sure some people on RUclips will do it :).
The HW has more transient attack and pleasing saturation. However, I agree that it is subtle and the plugin does an excellent job.
Yes and the calibration on the plugin was surprisingly very very close too!
This compressor has a way it handles the low end I have never heard any compressor brings out low end power in this manner ❤❤❤
Yes it is very unique and impressive in that sense!
Excellent comparison! Love the 1-to-1 settings vs the alternate settings to match the sound as close as possible. Extraordinarily helpful
Ho wow thanks a lot for the kind words!
Do you still have files bro? I'm very curious about the comparison with eventide eq45 ❤
Heyyy, hmmmm not sure, but tbh the Eventide plugin seems quite old. I think you'd be better off taking it to imitate the curve with a better EQ after.
But where is the hardware? I dont see any......
Oh there is no hardware, it's all a lie, all a simulation. Morpheus wasn't lying! But what's that? : ruclips.net/video/rOCsfkP2UO0/видео.html P.S. : The thumbnail is also a lie, the hardware doesn't exist.
yo i have had slats like U at the back and sides a little, removed them because the room sound was ugly ..
Hey! Every room’s unique. Maybe yours wasn’t made for these. I obviously can’t tell from where I am. The only thing I know is that this room sounds very good here and so far we had a lot of great names coming and loving the sound. So I guess for us here it was a good match :D. And they look nice too imho.

Haha yeah it’s a pretty common thing in studio. But I guess it works better on bigger rooms maybe.
but good shit
didnt understand to much, but where was the hardware? Are you french?
Hello. No way my accent was THAT bad in this video🤣? Actually you can see which one is the hardware in the tracks name. The hardware is named "GML" and you can look at which one is soloed to see which one is playing. But tbh, it's better to not know as it will be like a blindtest ;).
@@WheelieMix yes but where is the hardware? DO YOU HAVE IT?
@@RAWREALDEAL Ho no, I am completely a liar and decided to waste my precious time doing fake comparison because.... because it's fun? Not even actually. Follow me on Instagram to find out ;). P.S. : The thumbnail should give you a hint ;).
@@WheelieMix iam just askin. GOSH UNSUB SORRY learn how to commnicate, it was just a question

By the way it's just humor and sarcasm, it wasn't intended to be disrespectful <3. I thought you liked it raw ;). My humor is quite dry and raw we could say hehe.
What’s your thoughts on SSL Channelstrip 2? Is it closer to that SSL Sound?
Hey. Tbh the video was released before SSL Ch2. So I cannot say. But having access to an SSL 4000G atm, I don't really care about plugins. Although the UAD one felt very very close. So I might be curious to try the SSL Ch2. BUT! The SSL Ch2 is emulating a 9k, not a 4k, so not really comparable so to speak. And one of my favorite thing about SSL desk is to overload them. Which I don't think the SSL Ch2 is focused on. As they emulated a much cleaner desk.
@@WheelieMix There’s the E button that supposedly models the 4000E desk. Saturation was supposed to be included but in the newest model.ñ plugin, the 4KB. It’d be awesome for those of us who haven’t experienced the desk itself to get your opinion on it 🤗🙏🏽
Love your vids. Found you on FB. I understand how you hear things…totally agree about how the plugin handles the transients
Hey! Ah glad you found the video useful. The differences are subtle right? But there imho!
Question - would you track vocals through it If you couldn’t get your hands on a cl1b ?
Hey, this is not an emulation of a CL1B actually. It's a Tube-Tech emu, but not the CL1B model :).
@@WheelieMix hey thanks but I’m not talking about the stupid plug-in. I meant tracking with the SMC instead of the cl1b. Ive never tracked through the smc and curious if it’s good for that or too much to worry about. - but I could get one for half the current price of a cl1b.
@@spunkadellic I tried tracking through the SMC and tbh I found it a bit overkill. But CL1B and SMC are nothing alike. The only thing they share is the brand name in my humble opinion.
@@WheelieMix that’s exactly what I thought thanks.
Are you actually using the hardware?. Curves only tell part of the story.
If I am not using the hardware, what am I doing then? Yep curves is only side of the story. Phase/magnitude/THD (and with digital we can also add cramping) is the hidden side of the iceberg. But when matching curves is where we can hear if there are actually differences in that regard imho.
@@WheelieMixThanks. Curves are not everything. You can make curves with stock EQ. Also two different technologies.

Analogue (iron / console) is the best / and this is not a matter of dispute / it's like there is a real woman and rubber / and someone believes that rubber is no worse than the real one, or even better! but that's definitely not the case! but everyone believes in his own! and this is a matter of personal faith of each! (from a real woman - real love and real children are born in love)
That's a valid point of view indeed!
analog = best !
Haha thanks for sharing your opinion. A subject generating a lot of debate for sure :).
The width difference was enormous on the full mix. Thanks for the super valuable comparison.
Ha my pleasure!!!
Je reconnais l’accent français le slate est le meilleur
Ouiiii haha ^^. Content que tu es trouvé ton pref dans cette comparaison!
Nice tune, love the sound.
Ha thanks a lot for sharing your positive vibe ❤️❤️.
Amazing channel! Subscribed. Totally underrated. Only 1330 Subs??? Makes no sense to me.... The hardware has a bit more high end so unless you have something that has too much high end that you want to get rid of , then the hardware will always sound more airy. But the difference is very small. I don't use hardware but enjoy these kind of tests very much. It shows me that plugins get better constantly. Of course I would love a room with hardware to play around but I don't think I would like switching to hardware if I had many projects to handle with all the revisions and the spoiled customers nowadays .... Keep the content coming man!
Ho wow thanks for the amazing words. Yes I don’t have a lot of subs and views because I can’t afford taking the time to promote and stuff. RUclips is an extremely time consuming platform. I agree with you here the plugin is so close that it surprised me! Now I got a « room full of hardware » and tbh, recalls aren’t a big issue for me. As I mainly print/commit to the sound. If by any mean the artist dislike what I did I can just go back and do something else with plugins if required ✌️. Thanks for chiming ❤️.
@@WheelieMix I hear ya!
Thank you very much! Hardware = real reality / plug-ins = optical illusion and profanity
Hey, glad you found this review/demo useful. Although I'd not say the plugin is a profanity but rather a democratization. Which in my book is 90% of the time a good thing :).
