Subscribe for some awesome content and the occasional live streams!
Silver-spotted Skipper Caterpillar (Epargyreus clarus)
The Silver-Spotted Skipper Caterpillar is one of the most unique in North America for its thin "neck" (common to skippers - family Hesperiidae) and halloween-like mask with fake eye spots. Their colors help them blend with their host plants, but their ability to create shelters further protects them from day-time predators. This one was found on Wisteria in Rochester, New Hampshire on July 21st, 2024.

Each egg would be barely visible with the naked eye, but under our microscope we can see so much happening! The larvae begin their fight for survival right in the egg, working so hard to emerge into the world where they must act fast to feed and protect themselves. All insects deserve our attention and appreciation. Take a moment to look a little closer at the plants you pass by, you never know...

imagine if they lived in hives...
Wouldn't really matter since they have no way of harming anything larger than itself, actually that would be pretty cool if they lived in colonies. Imagine having a little mantidfly farm in your room like an ant farm. 😍
