I just looked up OBS Studio and it looks like it requires an enormous amount of space on your computer and possibly a computer with special digitizing capabilities. Am I correct on this, or will a standard desktop PC with Windows 10 work? I don't want to buy all the parts I need if I can't download and use the OBS Studio. I love your video, clarity, and sense of humor. Thanks!

This works. I tried it and I am satisfied with the results considering the cost, ease and quality. I tried a couple of the thumb drive capture cards and they were difficult to set up and were not as good quality video. The two components work better than a thumb drive set up.

What about the cable box's HDCP (HiDef Copy Protection) encryption? You'll need to use a device that strips away that copy protection.

IMHO the HDMI port in the computer is an output only - not an input. Thats why you need the HDMI to USB device.

Am just NOW discovering this 2023 video in June 2024. You are extremely thorough in all facets. Specific reason for commenting is I'd like to do the REVERSE: Record ONTO VHS from my iMac desktop. Am able to mirror my iMac to my Samsung TV - but - that's where I'm stuck. Would GREATLY appreciate your help in getting me to the finish line.

set obs to 'yadif 2x' in the interlacing options, and 'lancoz' in the scale filtering youll get much smoother video finish.

I purchased everything suggested, set it up step by step, checked and rechecked my steps but I can’t get the video to appear on my computer. I even tried recording but it just recorded the blue screen. I have a Toshiba laptop with windows 7. Any suggestions?

So do you then have to play the game through the computer? Is there a way to still play off the tv at the same time?

I use the same setup. A couple things you might mention... 1, under Tools on the top menu bar you can select Output timer and set the length of time it will record. You can also see the recordings under the File / Show Recordings from the top menu bar. One thing I'm trying to find is for OBS to stop recording when the video signal is lost. I currently setting record time for 6hrs and then using Windows Movie Maker to split the content. Would be nice if OBS stopped recording automatically.

What about aspect ratio and resolution? Aren't VHS signals 480x640 and 4:3? Does OBS need to know that?

Thanks for the video! It gave me some new inspiration after troubleshooting all day. Just rubberduck debugging here, this might be interesting: I have a smart tv (ChiQ U55H7a). It's new but the LCD screen is broken. I am trying to see my tv screen with Cam Link 4k via OBS on my computer, but it just says: no signal. So, I suspect I need to finish some kind of setup on the tv itself, which I can't do because the screen doesn't work, Or am I missing a cable box? What do you think? I've also tried directly connecting it to my internet via ether cable / trying to find it via my Google Home system / trying to blindly go trough the first setup -which is hi-la-rious to even try btw-, but....alas, nothing seems to work. If you have any troubleshooting ideas, I'd love to hear them!

Excellent overview and information. Exactly what I was looking for. I actually added another component - a 1 to 2 HDMI OREI Splitter. You have to pay attention to the splitter compatibility with your cable box, but I am able to connect my Comcast cable box to both my Smart TV and my computer at the same time for watching and recording.
