You Are My Sunshine (9 Month Violin Update)
This is an update on my violin playing after 9 months since trying to learn the thing. Most days I do practice but often it's for a short duration. Hopefully now that I'm getting a skin allergy figured out I may get some more daily time in.
Erik and I used to sing the chorus of "You Are My Sunshine" together in the semi-truck when passing by a place in north-west Ontario. In this video I loop guitar, slide, and shaker and then violin and sing over top. I hadn't initially planned the singing part - but I love singing. There it is.

quiet day at home to practice some songs. this was one. I liked how the recording came out. I didn't have video so put in some images that I've taken over the years. It's a short song so not too many images.

It's the vocal part I'm playing. Video recorded with phone. Audio recorded with that ribbon in a box into Reaper where I added reverb. If only room had acoustics like that maybe I'd get sick of it.

I'm sure I'll be able to do this better in another six months. Even the vocal should improve by then - possibly an octave higher. I'll see if I eventually record something like that. The hand drum is made from a coffee can which I stretched a freezer bag over it for a skin. The shaker is a cardboard tube with some dry rice inside. CHAPTERS: 00:00 Introduction. Some things went well. Other things not as much. For whatever reason, I was feeling quite tired and it affected me. Still - I've done way worse before and some my vocals worked out better than in previous tries. Immediately afterwards I thought this was a train wreck but I'm happy to have video to tell me that is was "ok" by my present standards. Song List: 0:23 I Hope that I Don't Fall In love...

the guitar was recently given to me. I also had a microphone at standing height about a meter away. I didn't think it would catch my voice but I guess it did get some of it in addition to the one pointing at the guitar. Chapters: 00:00 Story about the guitar 3:22 What it sounds like

Very cool, Michelle. Its coming along.
Improvement a bit at a time is what keeps me going :)
💗Very nice, Michelle!
Thank you! 😊 I'll try it again when my violin playing is a bit better too
Wow , ❤ 🤘 new sub from Frank Terzo
Thanks and I had a peek at your channel too and subscribed. I look forward to more. Frank is a great musician and does a lot for the community. I don't know him personally but he seems wonderful
@MichelleFrets you're very welcome! And thank you 😊. Yes Frank is an amazing musican & human ❤️. So glad to have found you through him. . ✌️ have a great week

It’s always great to hear your musical adventures Frets. I miss your regular posts on MeWe. Glad to see you here!
It's a pity MeWe chose to alienate so many people. I'm close to walking out the door just because a social media platform needs people using it and MeWe barely has any. They should have written articles in plain language that listed what was going to be possible from the user perspective versus what has been impossible. Instead they offered articles of techno-babble and bullshit. I'm hating my voice again today. As often as not for part year, singing lessons cause me to feel hopeless. This last one especially so. I'll get over it. Thanks, John. I follow your music here on youtube as well.
This is superb, Michelle
My singing teacher asked me where my tendency to talk in songs came from instead of singing. I didn't know but thought maybe it came from a time when I couldn't sing whatsoever. Also, maybe, when I first started to get interested in making music several years ago Townes and others of the genre were what I was listening to a lot. Anyway, both she and I want me to sing more and talk less but I still like this style a lot. Thanks Frank
You never cease to impress Michelle
It went better than I thought. The young lady to my left that looked back regularly seemed to like my first tune before they all departed
Very nice there Frets 2:56
what happened at 2:56 ? Thanks Friend :)
Very well done, Michelle
Keep bringing it Miss Frets well sorted
I do have another video in the works with me actually in it. ... but I have to re-do it. I didn't have the camera set up well. I'll try again with that one soon
Beautifully played! Love the slideshow...❤❤❤
Thank you Steph :) I really like the lyrics to this song a lot
Brilliant Michelle
This is awesome, Michelle
I'm happy to have gotten through it without truly messing it up. I don't know if I get caught up in the imagery of the lyrics or what, but I often mess up. I adore this song
Beautiful guitar work!
Not precisely as the songwriter did it.. my interpretation :) I could have used some bass. I'm talking myself into that idea
You should expand on this. Def has potential
It could use a little breathing room before repeating. 1 minute probably better. Or.. variations on the theme for several minutes
Very ethereal!
Long and powerful reverb :)
Copyright claim on a traditional song. Ah well... I'm not in the youtube money business anyway
Very Impressive Frets very clean sound. The hand carved pattern on the guitar top is very cool. Your well on you way multi talented Miss Frets Brilliant to say the least.
The microphone and traditional music transcends me into a much earlier time. lol
the acrylic paint has arrived to make it extra artsy :) and thanks :)
Sounded good! Your voice, your guitar and the violin all sounded in tune and right on (hippie lingo, lol). Microphone works!
Thanks! I'm a work in progress - haha :) It just occured to me to figure out a violin part for Whiskey Girl. Hmm
🥲❤
Love this!! You have made such progress with the violin..and thatbis not an easy instrument to play. Well done ❤💜👏👏🫶
Thanks Steph. I think my progress with violin with do better now that my allergy is under control. My neck has been a real thing the last months
Beautiful to listen too 👏👏
I adore that song :) thank you
Hauntingly lovely, Michelle! You should be called Michelle Frets Techy! Impressive!
Thank You! I know that the violin is scratchy and not 100% on pitch. Same with my voice. ... but overall I like the progress. My life is slowing down again finally. Should get back to social media-ing again soon. Best Wishes!!! <3
crazy cool Miss Frets
I think I've lost objectivity with the tune. Maybe it's just my recording of it that is disappointing. I always remember the sound from the monitor being so much different than what I end up recording. Perhaps I'm going insane. Thanks for watching/listening :)
@@MichelleFrets not Miss Frets admirable to say the least
You get better and better!
I had a guitarin' hiccup just before my vocal started. Weird... but I guess I maybe will always have somethin going on
Wonderful performance!!!🎉🎉
My joke didn't pan out though. Hahaha :) thanks Steph!
Way to go Michelle 🍻 awsome. The Giz 😉
I'm going to keep working at improving until I can have a whole set. Then.. I'll keeping working it some more :)
Brava! Your singing was spot on and your picking is always terrific!
I added some harmonica to your short and will post it in the Guitar Players group if you don't mind. Fun little bit to play with.
I'll have a listen later tonight :)
It's a great place to play at. Friendly people and a decent sound system, but the acoustics in the place are terrible for recording. I may ask if it is possible to record audio direct from the mixer
Very cool Miss Frets i cant see any welcome wearing out with talent like this your a natural🎼
legend
That guitar has a nice tone!
Yeah. I don't know why some people poo-poo Yamaha guitars just on principle

Shoshanna
Hoo! I like it :) Is there a story behind the name that you could relate?
@@MichelleFrets It just sounded right
I'm going with "Carl"
I dunno about this but you get top markx for making me giggle for several minutes!!! :)
very nice!!!
Thanks :) I need to work out what to do for another 4 measures in the violin. That would make an 8 measure loop and take me through the "tangled up in blue" phrase
Never heard that song before. I like it and your version of it as well! We miss you on the MeWe!
I'll be back to MeWe before long. Overall I haven't been feeling well and am slipping behind in projects. I'm cutting back on "open mic" stuff too. Probably just two in July plus one song at an open air festival
Amore the Italian word for love It’s a guitar that needs a loving touch…
Oh! I like your suggestion too!!
nice job frets
How about Roxanne? Guitar sounds good!
Hmmmm :) maybe an Italian version of Roxanne.
Michelle Fretts😅
@@skippylanoue966 I can't name a guitar after myself :)
@@MichelleFrets sure you can🤣....of course you ain't naughty 🤔 ,..... Okay, I guess you can't 😊
That’s as relaxed as I’ve ever seen you. Sounds great as well!
Thanks John :) I wouldn't want to become reliant but maybe a pint of Loghouse Lager beforehand helps 😂 I need to figure out how to keep my guitar strap from slipping on my clothes. That was my main issue with guitarin' that night
Excellent performance. With your permission, I would love to feature parts of this performance and other music from your channel on a playlist Im preparing and premiering on Canada Day
That is a lovely idea! I'd feel quite pleased to be included. Thank you :)
Very cool night and how you cut the songs up in clips Miss Frets
The chapters feature is a very good idea
Nice work!!
that little loop worked out :) I've discovered a bad thing about my cheapo looper though. Even when recording a constant sound it'll make a blip when the loop repeats. Maybe they're all like that -- but I doubt it
Going Home! You have come a long way! Here are the lyrics (published in 1922) to the lovely tune you played written by William Arms Fisher, a student of Dvorak: Goin' home. Goin' home. I'm a-goin' home. Quiet-like some still day, I'm just goin' home. It's not far, just close by, through an open door. Work all done, cares laid by, goin' to roam no more; Mother's there 'xpecting me, father's waiting, too, Lots of folks gathered there, all the friends I knew. Morning star lights the way, restless dream all done. Shadows gone, break of day, real life just begun. There's no break, there's no end, just a-living on; Wide awake, with a smile, going on and on. Going home. Going home, I'm just going home. It's not far, just close by, through an open door.
Thank you :) I didn't know lyrics existed for this. Now it'll be worth spending more time with this lovely melody!
Favorite,; get that dust in the air.
Getting better!
When I recorded the piano part I should have gave a measure or two of beats before really starting so I'd have a chance to get on the violin before it got going on playback. Next time :) It is getting better but.. ya know... it's fretless
Nice performance! You look really relaxed and at ease❤
A pint of nice beer doesn't hurt :) Just kidding, I often don't have paralyzing nervousness anymore. I like this type of audience too. Loud and having fun with their own conversations is fine by me. I know I am still being heard :)
The acoustics are great because of all the wood but they not only carry your music, they also echo all the various conversations. If you're nervous, it's great because you get comfortable thinking no one's listening anyway. But some appear to be listening to your talented pickin' and singin'! Great job, Michelle!
I don't mind really when it seems few people are paying attention. It doesn't mean there isn't a component of their brains listening even if they aren't looking at me. If they have fun and I have fun then it's perfect from my point of view :)
Still my favourite picker miss frets just sayin rolled right into that.
I played this song outside today in almost the same spot :) Thanks Steve . You did very well last night at the Loghouse. One of your best yet
