The Last 5 Years A Miracle Would Happen When You Come Home
“Just 28! The savior of writing!!”
This is my favorite production and version of this musical, there’s something about his and Sherie’s acting. In all I’ve seen of the other productions , this is the best showcase of acting that I’ve ever witnessed.
I’ve always had this image of Jamie singing this to his lover with her trying to get dressed and leave the bedroom and he pulls her back down when he sings, “Come back to bed.” I’m not so sure this blocking is right, even if it is the original.
“No one can give you courage. No one can thicken your skin. I will not fail for you to feel comfortable Cathy. I will not lose because you can’t win”.
I wish I could’ve seen this live. Just incredible!!
Omg wait now i understand the first and last segments of the song that’s actually so cool tysm for this 🩷
This is the version I’ve been looking for thank you so much 💓
No one can top Norbert! Just masterful
He always makes notes sound so EFFORTLESS. Just an immaculate and distinctive voice.
she is *the* best cathy hyatt
Thank you. 💝
This is GOAT SHIT
No other Jamie will ever compare. The guilt that flashes across his face, the anger at her and himself. It’s a master class in starting small and subtle and slowly building.
Yeah this was first… well now my fourth time watching it and I’m just so impressed and moved by his performance, it takes a great blend of truly being in the moment (or at least letting the scene happen) and careful planning and tableau’s and beats to hit to really tell the story of Jamie very well. I’m actually about to be doing a production of TL5Y and I’m fortunate enough to be playing Jamie and I’m currently trying to shape my Jamie and this was a great video to give me ideas about how I might want to do it. Because I also really resonate with Norbert’s portrayal of the insecurities that Jamie has right under the surface that he masks from so many people. I kinda feel like he has a deep level of imposter syndrome and I’m hoping to be able to bring that subtlety out in my performance :)
SUCH a legend
IMO best version I’ve seen so far
First, a story. Little Christmas story I call it "The Story of Schmuel, Tailor of Klimovich" Schmuel would work 'til half-past ten at his tailor shop in Klimovich Get up at dawn and start again with the hems and pins and twist Forty-one years had come and gone at his tailor shop in Klimovich Watching the winters soldier on, there was one thing Schmuel missed "If I only had time, " old Schmuel said "I would build the dress that's in my head A dress to fire The mad desire Of girls from here to Minsk But I have no more hours left to sew" Then the clock upon the wall began to glow And the clock said, "na na na na, na na na Oh Schmuel, you'll get to be happy! Na na na na, na na na, I give you unlimited time! Na na na na, na na na, so Schmuel, go sew and be happy!" But Schmuel said, "No, no, it's not my lot I've gotta make do with the time I've got" Schmuel was done at half-past ten and He said, "Good night, old Klimovich" Put on his coat to go, but then the clock cried, "Wait! Not yet! Even though you're not wise or rich, you're the finest man in Klimovich! Listen up, Schmuel - Make one stitch and you'll see what you can get!" But Schmuel said, "Clock, it's much too late I'm at peace with life, I accept my fate" But the clock said, "Schmuel! One stitch and you will Unlock the dreams you've lost!" So Schmuel, with reluctance, took his thread He pulled a bolt of velvet and he said "I should take out my teeth and go to bed I'm sitting here with talking clocks instead!" And the clock said, "na na na na, na na na Oh Schmuel, you'll get to be happy! Na na na na, na na na, I give you unlimited time! Na na na na, na na na, just do it and you can be happy!" So Schmuel put the thread through the needle's eye And the moon stared down from a starless sky And he pushed the thread through the velvet black And he looked, and the clock was turning back! So he grabbed his shears and he cut some lace As the hands moved left on the old clock's face! And his fingers flew and the fabric swirled It was nine-fifteen all around the world! Ev'ry cut and stitch was a perfect fit As if God Himself were controlling it! And Schmuel cried, through a rush of tears "Take me back! Take me back all forty-one years!" And on it went, down that silent street 'Til Schmuel's dress was at last complete And he stretched his arms, and he closed his eyes And the morning sun finally started to rise And the dress he made on that endless night Was a dress that would make any soul take flight! Not a swatch, not a skein had gone to waste Ev'ry ribbon and button ideally placed And sewn into the seams Were forty-one seasons of dreams Dreams that you could feel Coming real And that very dress, so the papers swore Was the dress a girl in Odessa wore On the day she promised forevermore To love a young man named Schmuel Who only one day before Had knocked at her kitchen door Plenty have hoped and dreamed and prayed, but they can't get out of Klimovich If Schmuel had been a cute Goyishe maid, he'd've looked a lot like you Maybe it's just that you're afraid to go out on to a limb-ovich Maybe your heart's completely swayed, but your head can't follow through But shouldn't I want the world to see The brilliant girl who inspires me? Don't you think that now's a good time to be The ambitious freak you are? Say goodbye to wiping ashtrays at the bar! Say hello to Cathy Hiatt, big-time star! 'Cause I say Na na na na na na na na Cathy, you get to be happy! Na na na na na na na I give you unlimited time! Na na na na na na na Stop temping and go and be happy! Here's a headshot guy and a new backstage Where you're right for something on ev'ry page Take a breath Take a step Take a chance Take your time Have I mentioned today How lucky I am To be in love with you?
This is such a difficult part for the actor who plays Cathy to capture. Most of the time, Cathy's performance of this song always seems forced or fake. But Sheri Renee Scott nails this. I know she's the original, but I've never seen it acted this well.
Absolutely. She nails the giddiness and fulfillment of new love, but without the naivety of youth, that just has never been matched.
I love the moment when he searches for the watch and then looks at it while giving it to Cathy. It's brilliant! The whole song is so cute and then kind of self-centered at the same time. It's so Jamie, and you really understand why Cathy fell in love with him.
Why self centered? I kinda understand but am still confused lol
He’s trying to save her, which is something Cathy doesn’t want. On the surface it’s just a sweet pep talk. It’s also he is telling her that she will be a star so stop doing the temp that she hates anyway and just focus on acting. Which is to say that since he is doing well financially, she doesn’t need to do these side jobs. That is a great position to be in. But you can also see it as having to rely solely on your partner for all of your finances until you make it.
Such a good song.
First🥸
My favorite version
The bar which all other Jamies are measured against
No one sings this like her. No one sings this like him. I wish I could’ve seen this live once.
Perfect
Is the spray ... bug spray?
yes, she’s outside at a summer theatre
Just as good 18 years later. Thanks Sheri.
BRAVO. Wonderful. THANKS.
4:49 to the end gets me every time
What year was this production? Norbert is my favorite Jamie
I believe 2002 in Chicago. I could be wrong.
@@piavic951 Yeah, it's either the original Chicago production in '01, or the original off-Broadway production in '02. Both starred Norbert Leo Butz and Sheri Rene Scott.
There's something very soothing in his voice.. And this song, omg! It's perfect.
he’s gotta have one of the most underrated voices in contemporary musical theatre, right?
He was the original Fiyero in Wicked definitely not underrated
This is brilliant.
The idea of a first-time author having the kind of instant success that is written into the musical is it's weakest point. Does it still happen? Does anyone ever ('fucking Random House') fight off the interest from a big publishing house? Everyone I know is too busy scratching to try and get up the ladder to have attitude.
Matthew Campling well, the man who wrote this based it off his own relationship and career soooo
Hi - yes that doesn't surprise me - his last song the lyric is 'I could never rescue you' ... I think this makes it sound like it's all the woman's fault - but it's also in the songs that he's already started a new relationship... It's fascinating the way the songs progress the relationship but it does seem to me that he gives himself the breaks ... and that last song 'Goodbye Until Tomorrow' is quite brilliant.
Matt C It’s happening to irish author Sally Rooney now. She’s only about 26 and her first two books have been critically acclaimed award winning bestsellers. Actually, her first book was subject of a seven-party bidding war for publishing rights. So I suppose it does happen to some people!
Also - I've now heard all the recordings on RUclips of these two songs - and at least for the woman, this is the best rendition. So who is she?
Sherie Rene Scott, and Norbert Leo Butz, from the original Off-Broadway cast :)
Hi - thanks for clarifying this - after my post the CD of the show arrived and I thought the beautiful blonde was Sherie ... thank you for responding. What a great show - I live in London and saw a production at the Edinburgh fringe last week and was very moved by this song.
NO info on this which is a shame - very attractive singing from both the singers. Any info?
Cathy, played by Sherie Rene Scott Jamie, played by Norbert Leo butz Musical: _The Last Five Years_ Composer: Jason Robert Brown
