I first heard ‘Rumble’ way back in 1958 as a ‘Baby Boomer’ lucky enough to have been born in time to be weaned on Rock’n’Roll as it swept in from the USA in the mid-Fifties. I used to spend hours sat next to the jukebox at a Southampton town centre ‘Milk Bar’ (coffee bar) I knew all the words of the latest hits as the older kids put their money in, asking me what would I like to hear. Later that same year I was singing some of these same tracks at local teen dances which led to my lifelong career in show-business. (Google david st john comedian) ‘Rumble’ blew me away and many of us know how it inspired many a future guitar superstar, including Jeff Beck. Incredible basic 3 chord track with distorted guitar through damaged speakers plus echo and other effects - way ahead if its time. Better still was hearing it played at high volume on the visiting funfair rides with the flashing light displays that racked up the excitement. It took a few years before the Kinks issued their first 45 which hit the no.1 spot in 1964. The opening riff on ‘You Really Got Me’ is often cited as the first ‘heavy metal’ riff with its power chords that ‘Link’ back to ‘Rumble’ (Nice pun?) My pop group days kicked off in 1964 as I sang with several Hampshire-based line-ups before going solo in the early Seventies with a change of direction. If you Google ‘david st john comedian’ then you can also read loads of webpages highlighting the early pop and beat groups. The 2020 UK lockdown gave me time to write my second book which tells of the first part of my long career - still at it! This excerpt pays homage to this forward thinking talent that many of us know about. “ Early in the same year of 1958, I heard another amazing ’45 recording of ‘Rumble’ by the American guitarist Link Wray. This innovative musician was experimenting with his own unique sound by damaging his speakers that distorted the sound - a forerunner of the later Sixties artistes such as Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix and many more virtuosos, albeit by the use of new sound foot pedals, named ‘Wah-Wah’ and ‘Fuzzbox’ etc. Wray suffered a backlash back in the USA, as many radio stations refused to play the record, with its ‘menacing’ sound and title that also referred to street gang fights, or juvenile delinquency!

It's still better than nothing, so thank you. I only found 3 other videos, but the person disabled their comments. Too bad, because they are great (2 tracks "Get out of my head" and "Mystery song" which I love + "Down down". For me who is disabled, that's already a lot.

Are you the same David St John who appeared in this BrainTeaser episode? If it is, then really nice to see some clips of you on the show. They're every bit as good as I remember. Just out of interest, do you have the whole BrainTeaser episode as well as just the clips and is there any chance you could upload it? Thanks either way. I believe this episode is from either Friday 31st January 2003 or Friday 7th February 2003. I know (and I'm sure you know) that it's definitely a Friday episode Alex Lovell (who was the host when you appeared on the show) announces before the credits that Craig Stevens is due to host the next episodes in the following week.

Aunt Maria in this video is my grandmother!I'm shocked and moved! I didn't have the opportunity to meet her because I was 5 years old when she passed. If there is more about my grandmother in this video I would please like to see the whole one! Thank you for giving me the opportunity to see her again
