UPDATE: 14 December 2024 - Over the weekend i'll be uploading a few videos from the newly released sample set by Beauty in Sound, St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol.
For those who are new to my channel, I'm Derek and currently the Principal Organist at Scotland's National Catholic Shrine, Carfin Grotto, just on the outskirts of Glasgow - I might only have a small channel, but have some faithful supporters, so thank you all.
The majority of music mostly is created within my organ studio using Hauptwerk software in 4K surround sound, so expect varied music from sampled organs coming soon. I'll try and be more frequent going forward and will also try to tweak various elements of the videos, from camera angles, colours, screen etc - It's a complete work in Progress!!
I love playing all types of music, so if there is anything you would maybe like, i'm happy to take requests, so please don't hesitate to get in touch.
Best wishes,
Derek

Rondeau from 'Abdelazer' (Henry Purcell)
Просмотров 73День назад
My own transcription of the famous Rondeau by Henry Purcell from the opera 'Abdelazer' which he wrote the incidental music to. I decided to record this one using the Duren sample set for Hauptwerk by Piotr Grabowski (piotrgrabowski.pl/duren) as I really wanted a grand sound, and this instrument was perfect as it has the added bonus of wonderful chamade stops at my disposal, which as you will he...
Elegy (Malcolm Archer)

As we are in November, I thought I would upload "Elegy" by Malcolm Archer, a modern and beautiful composition very much in the English Romantic style, clearly based on the famous Thalben-Ball arrangement which every organist including myself play - Actually, you can watch me playing this piece in a very old video from a few years ago: ruclips.net/video/njJTP9tH0zw/видео.html Anyway, for the Mal...

Largo from 'Xerxes' (G.F. Handel)

My own transcription of the famous Largo from the opera 'Xerxes' by George Frederic Handel (1685 - 1759) based on the style of the late Carlo Curley/Virgil Fox. For this piece, I've decided to use the Alessandra sample set by Piotr Grabowski (piotrgrabowski.pl/alessandria) as it's one of my favourite sample sets and as its a very versatile and symphonic instrument, I've tried to demonstrate the...

Prelude on 'Rockingham', the famous hymn tune often sung to the words 'When I Survey The Wondrous Cross' by Christopher Tambling, who was a British organist/composer mainly associated with Downside Abbey, Somerset. He sadly passed away in 2015, and this composition has a hint of a few composers and themes within it including a really cheeky one (if I used another note, you'd guess easily - mayb...

Elegy (Bb Major) - G.T. Thalben-Ball
Просмотров 6402 года назад
'Elegy' actually started off as an organ improvisation at the end of a BBC broadcast of Choral Evensong in the 1940's. It turned out to be so popular amongst listeners, Sir George Thalben-Ball decided to write it out and in turn dedicated it to Sir Henry Walford Davies, his predecessor at The Temple Church, London. This work regularly features at Civic and Royal events, as such, I've dedicated ...
Organ Sonata No. II (C Minor) Op. 65 - Felix Mendelssohn
Просмотров 6532 года назад
Felix Mendelssohn was a German composer, pianist, organist and conductor of the early Romantic period. He actually wrote very little organ music, as such, his primary organ works are the Three Preludes and Fugues, Op. 37 (1837), and the Six Sonatas, Op. 65 (1845), of which Eric Werner wrote "next to Bach's works, Mendelssohn's Organ Sonatas belong to the required repertory of all organists". Prelude on 'Londonderry Air' - Noel Rawsthorne

The famous Irish tune "Londonderry Air" is arranged here by the legendary English organist, Noel Rawsthorne who sadly died last year, 2019. The origin of the tune was for a long time somewhat mysterious, as no other collector of folk tunes encountered it until in 1855, when it was first published by the Society for the Preservation and Publication of the Melodies of Ireland in the book "The Anc...

Nicely played. Very much in the Thalben-Ball / Walford-Davies model as you say but a lovely piece in its own right too. Thanks for the upload.
Thanks Marcus, I'm glad you've enjoyed this little work by Malcolm Archer which has been beautifully crafted with a nice melody, some lovely harmonies and actually quite pleasing to the ear. A worthy asubstitute to both the Walfred-Davies and Thalben-Ball. 🙂
What a cyber "cathedal"😂
I know - it's such a wonderful and realistic sample set. D
What a jolly little piece! It sounds great on the Martinikerk organ too.
Many thanks Marcus - It's very simple yet effective at the same time and works well as a nice little encore!! :-)
I can never get used to your utter talent!
Thank you so much - you're very talented yourself!! :-)
Brilliant
Thanks Kevin, really glad you enjoyed - it's such a fine sample set!! :-)
Fantastic, Derek! Absolutely stunning! ❤
Thanks so much Chris, glad you enjoyed!! :-) Always open to further requests ;-) D
Wow. And one is not so often wowed by a quiet piece. Beautiful playing - you really "journeyed" through the piece. Thanks to your posting, I'm able to decide that this will be my offertory for Word Communion Sunday. I will try to play it as well as you did!
Thank you so much for your lovely comment, it's really appreciated - I know, there are some really nice quieter pieces that are really pleasing to listen to. I'm sure you will be able to play it beautifully on world communion Sunday if you decide to use it!! :-)
Such a wonderful French fonds sound. Beautifully played.
Thank you @MarcusReeves for your lovely comment - oh, you can’t beat a big fond sound!!
Beautifully played - and yes, what gorgeous strings on Caen - I'm so thankful we can play these sounds at home!
Thanks Jerry, they are indeed, such a great sample set despite it's age. Like you, it's fantastic we can play these wonderful instruments from around the world at home, we are very lucky and it's such a great hobby to have!!
A wonderful reflective moment to begin my day here - thank you Derek! Beautifully played!
Thanks so much Jerry, it's a beautiful little piece and hopefully it set you up for a nice relaxing and peaceful day ahead!! :-)
Beautifully played and fabulous production and packaging of this musical treat!! Subscribed 😊
Thank you so much Jerry, I'm glad you enjoyed and thanks for subscribing, it really means a lot. I'm still trying to get to grips with the editing side of things, so still takes me a while as I want to ensure content is of the highest quality, similar to your output as well as other fab Hauptwerkers!! :-) I'll get there and more content will be coming in the near future!! :-) D
This is a master performance, very good arrangement too
Thank you Shimbo for your lovely comment - I'm glad you enjoyed! :-)
Such fun! A really enjoyable performance. (I was fortunate to know Chris - this piece perfectly captures the little sparkle in his eye which often resulted in a cheeky harmony thrown in here or there.)
@@MarcusReeves thank you so much - it's a lovely little gem of a piece, which you can tell was written by Chris straight away with his very unique style. I never met him unfortunately, but from his vast amount of compositions, he certainly knew how to write a good tune with some amazing harmonies!!
beautiful!
Thanks Sarah :-)
What an impressive rendition maestro 👏👏👏👏
Thanks Shimbo, glad you enjoyed :-)
Quintessentially English. I studied a number of Alec Rowly piano exam pieces
Excellent!
Congratulations on an excellent performance of this organist favourite! And what a fitting tribute to QE2. Bravo Derek!
Thank you so much James, really appreciated and glad you enjoyed! :-) It's a very emotional piece of music and no wonder the BBC was flooded with so many enquiries with people trying and source the music after hearing it improvised live - so glad it was transcribed and now known to nearly every organist on the planet!! :-)
Congratulations on this recording! Beautifully played.
Glad you enjoyed James and also thank you so much for the lovely compliment, it's really appreciated!! 😀
Brilliant 👏
Thanks so much Alan :)
Very impressive. Very ambitious videography too.
Thank you Andreas - still learning with the videography, I'm only at a basic level with this at present!
Wonderful playing, Derek!
Thank you so much and glad you enjoyed Alejandro :-)
dang that's a nice sound out of salisbury
It packs a good punch for one of the oldest sample sets available!! :-)
What a beautiful and intimate chorale prelude, very well played on this fine old but very good sample set.
Thank you very much Ralph for your lovely comment, it is really appreciated. The Parry choral preludes are little gems in their own right and there was no better instrument to play it on than the wonderful "Hauptwerk" Father Willis which as you say is an old, but still fine sample set 😀
A great rendition of this famous St. Anne fugue. I'm currently working on this and hope to have it recorded soon! Bravo, Derek!
Thank you so much James, really appreciated - I'm looking forward to hearing your version of this wonderful fugue...it's such a joy to learn as you will know and probably the best fugue Bach ever wrote (in my opinion) even although it is fiendishly difficult in places, but that's the fun of it I guess!!! You've actually reminded me that I'll need to re-look at this in the next few weeks as Trinity Sunday is just around the corner!! :-)
A serene piece from a '' comforting'' era of English organ music composition. Conjures up much peaceful imagery of traditional church services of bygone years.
It certainly is - a very undervalued composer who wrote some beautiful liturgical music! :)
Where is the power from the bass ranks?
Hi Dale, I was using the stepper system on hauptwerk to create the crescendo/dimuendo, so basically just added appropriate bass for every section which I worked out in advance of the recording.
Oh, Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling From glen to glen, and down the mountain side. The summer's gone, and all the roses falling, It's you, It's you must go and I must bide. But come ye back when summer's in the meadow, Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow, It's I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow,- Oh, Danny boy, O Danny boy, I love you so! But when ye come, and all the flowers are dying, If I am dead, as dead I well may be, Ye'll come and find the place where I am lying, And kneel and say an Avè there for me. And I shall hear, though soft you tread above me, And all my grave will warmer, sweeter be, For you will bend and tell me that you love me, And I shall sleep in peace until you come to me!
Where can I download the sheet music I know there is a book called music of the bride but that book is out of stock I'm waiting for a remake from this book I hope that someone can help me
Hello Jos, I believe you will be able to find it within the following book direct from the publisher: www.kevinmayhew.com/products/something-old-something-new-60-joyful-wedding-pieces-for-organ-1400520#contents - Hope this helps. D
Derek - I've just been listening and following along with my copy of the score, and I really have to congratulate you on your sense of phrasing, timings and dynamics which make this piece evoke the emotions the composer intended. Really beautiful.
Thank you so much Ubertuba for your lovely comment and i'm so happy that my interpretation of this beautiful work has been enjoyed by yourself. :) Noel's harmonies and intended registrations really make this hymn-style prelude shine from start to finish! :)
Thank you for this beautiful music! Can l have a copy of your sheet music please?
Thank you for your lovely comment Joey. Unfortunately at the present time due to the current regulations, I don't have access to a scanner, so I would be unable to send a copy of the music to you. The music can be found within David Johnson's "Trumpet Tunes for Organ" and has a blue front cover, you won't miss it! You'll be able to find this within most music retailers i'm sure. Hope this helps :) D
@@derekburnsorg thanks so much for your comment Derek. You played it wonderful and your tempo has something magical which gives this trumpet tune a golden glow. I already ordered the book. Thank you so much for your answer!😃
@@coopertje100 Agreed on the tempo! Somehow every (so Johnsonian!) turn of melody and harmony and rhythym and indeed--simply--the big picture as it reveals itself must be savored. And isn't C Major just purely-arresting? Bach, Mahler, et al. rightly use it to make us feel "Resurrection." And after I hear and/or play them...'I believe." David played on the magnificent upper-middle-sized Skinner at Trinity in Phoenix. What became of this treasure I do not know. ...went the way of most of his work I guess. "Dumped." But we have Johnson's fine oeuvre. A decent compensation for the loss. I grew up a ten mins' walk from Trinity in Phoenix. A magical "mission revival" edifice! The boganvilla that wafts on a late summer night cooled down to 85° and that hush +glow, which is "only Phoenix." 💧 literally, as I wrote that. Thank you for an exquisite, powerful sentimental journey. Back to another Arizona of kinsmsn Mo Udall and Barry Goldwater who were fiercely loyal friends to each other as they each fiercely defended their political convictions. Moderate, highly productive and frugal positions by today's standards. C Major: bring it on alla David Johnson and Trinity Cathedral!!
Delicatissima!
Thank you for your lovely comment Carla :)
Salisbury is a great sample set!
Yep James, I agree it's a fantastic set, although most sample sets available on Hauptwerk are really amazing and so realistic!! D
Thank you. I was privileged to be in Liverpool Cathedral for Noel’s Memorial Service during which his ashes were brought into the building to be set (at a later date) into the wall of the north choir aisle under the organ, next to his predecessor Harry Goss Custard. Ian Tracey played this arrangement before the service. A very emotional occasion for all who loved and admired Noel.
Thanks Cae - it's such a lovely arrangement of this famous tune that Noel penned to paper. I only ever got to hear him play "live" once which was roughly 10 years ago within his beloved Anglican Cathedral, playing an impromptu improvised Fantasia on "A Mighty Fortress of Our God" at the end of an organists entertain recital kickstarting the latest restoration appeal. From what I remember, it was truly wonderful and in his very unique "Liverpooly" style that is so recognisable. I'm sure Ian, who is such a genuinely nice guy, would've worked his magic on this gorgeous piece, especially as it could've been very emotional playing at such a service. I have actually been very fortunate to have played the lovely WIllis within the Anglican Cathedral a few times over the last decade which were such wonderful experiences that will live with me forever.
NR now resting in peace beneath the organ loft. Memorial plaque is also in place.
Just beautiful, Derek! You have probably posted this before somewhere, but what is the instrument you are playing?
Thanks Nelsonbrook33, it's a very uplifting piece that I really enjoy playing, so i'm really glad that you enjoyed. I'm currently using an old Johannus Opus. 10 as my home practice instrument, although, I've not used the Johannus sounds for ages as it's currently connected to my laptop to run the Hauptwerk system, which is just fabulous and so realistic!! I'm currently waiting on a new computer coming in the next few weeks, so it means going forward, i'll be able to play some pieces using the higher bit-rate audio and will also allow me to use other sample sets which are more demanding on the RAM than Salisbury.
There is also a "Second Benedictus" 1942 , just as good.
Thanks Arthur, I'll have a look into the "sequel"
Thanks for introducing me to this lovely piece.
No problem at all cae, it's a wonderful little gem that I've only uncovered myself recently also!! Hope you manage to download and play yourself :-)
I have downloaded it thanks. I see you use Hauptwerk in a standard Viscount or similar digital - presumably through Midi. Does that give you control through the tabs or do you set up presets etc?
@@gilesgilbertscott i'm using a Johannes Opus. 10 and yes, it's through a midi to USB connection. I've set up pre-sets using the stepper system on the Salisbury organ, which is ideal to get a full range of colours for using the full 4 manuals on only 2, which is more complicated than you can imagine! I've allocated the Solo and Choir to the 1st manual (Swell) and the Great and Swell to the 2nd manual (Great), so when making the videos, it is so much easier to use this system which has been allocated to a pedal piston - you may see activated every stop changes when one of the tab-lights come and go. I've also assigned a limited selection of my most desired stops to the tabs, however, I really only use these when i'm note-bashing really! Hope this helps, but if you have any questions, please let me know :)
Beautifully played and interpreted, Derek! Thank you for sharing. BTW, this music is available for free on the IMSLP website if anyone is interested: imslp.org/wiki/Benedictus_(Rowley%2C_Alec)
Thanks for your lovely comment Nelsonbrook33 - I'm glad you enjoyed, and yeah, hopefully people will be able to download the score from your link and try it out as it's such a wonderful wee gem!! :-)
Beautiful, played with sensitivity and excellent musicality!
Thanks Ronan for your lovely comment - it was a joy to play and record!! :-)

Thanks Phil, for you're lovely comment - It's a fantastic prelude by Bach, one of my favourites to play in Lent.
